Hollow: Tears of Ink (Final Hours Sketches)

Hello everyone, I guess it's time to show a early work in progress game project that I've been working on along with some friends, let me share a bit of it with you guys.

First of all, i'd like to present the group, we are Everlude, indie game developers. I'm the graphical artist, Game designer, writer and the one in charge of the group and the project, We got two programers and one other writer and manager that work on some general stuff. I've contacted S.N.N. and Todd from SMWCentral for the audio, and they gladly said yes, unfortunatelly, there are some issues that need to be taken care of before the music starts to be developed. Now that we both know each other, let us start.

Hollow is a puzzle game where you control a strange creature made of Ink, attending by the name of "Hollow", that just woke up somewhere unfamiliar. He starts to wander until he arrives at one broken windmill, once inside he finds an old green cap, and for his surprise, a little friend was hiding under it: One floating eye. Both of them set of on one deep and reflexive journey.

You control both characters: Hollow and TheEye (That stands as one support character, hovering around moving small objects to help hollow to proceed). Since Hollow is made of Ink, the game mechanics run around paintings, hollow can enter various canvases and change them using ink, transiting between the real world and the worlds existing within the paintings. We're going for the wise use of natural envoirment as part of the real world, and one abstract and surreal approach to these puzzles within paintings.

I'll now hand you all this awesome teaser made by myself and one really big help from Dawn.

The game main focus is to deliver one deep and emotional experience, where, albeit the game's initial visuals, have one really mature plot around it along with some unexpected turn of events.

The project is still early in development, but i hope you guys like the project, we are working for a really polished product, and soon you all will be able to play it.

We will be showing news and updates via Facebook for now, if you'd like to keep in touch, just give a like. Please leave some feedback and/or questions. Thank you all, and good C3.

>Final Hours Update!<

Bringing some of the various sketches done for the characters.

AND the very fist Hollow made (Colored recently though):

There will be more Final Hours stuff to come.
This is the first time I've actually seen anything pertaining to this (beyond you requesting music via PM of course). I have to say, the art style is very nice. It almost reminds me of a darker version of Braid.
Beautiful graphics; even if the trailor didn't reveal much gameplay.

The art alone sold it for me. I'll be staying posted on this project for sure.

EDIT: Also, cool title.
My layout has removed you.
That trailer looks it got a lot of investment behind it, it's very professional.

By reading your thread, the game concept sound interesting, and you got a really nice music team there, both Todd and S.N.N. are excellent composers. I can't wait to see footage from the game.
Looks pretty good. As for the teaser, it will be worth it to give it a try. Looking forward Ludus!
Bye.
Thank you guys so far, It's always nice to receive positive feedback.

Braid is one of the references I got for the graphical style, i guess it'll remind you more of it once I get the painting levels art done.
Even though, these graphics are in no way final, I'll change them eventually, mostly the background.

Really thanks, about the investiment, there is a lort of effort put on it, but not any financial one for now. We are aiming Kickstarter, then steam. Hopefully one or two levels (Out of 8) will be done by the end of the year for kickstarter.

Sure they are, and I really do hope that they start composing by the end of the year after kickstarting the project. The main problem is that the rest of the group don't like the idea of a composer far away from us, but it is something i'm taking care of.

Thank you. There will be gameplay footage by the next C3 this year. We only got one puzzle working on the engine so far, then there isn't much gameplay material now. But you can always like the facebook page, there will probably have gameplay content posted before C3.

Thanks, as a trivia the first name idea i had for Hollow was "As I Hear it Fall".

If this thread get more love by tomorrow, I'll update it with some more sweet stuff, probably some initial concept arts or beta in-game screens.

Oh my, this has got to be one of the best artworks in a while.
I was curious to see if the characters and images shown are just "images" or will actually still look that good ingame, but from what I can tell, (given the teaser) they actually are implemented like that.

This looks highly interesting and the concept of going from reality to fantasy (the drawings) seems like a neat idea as well.
I sure am looking forward to seeing more of this. Keep up the work Everlude #smw{:TUP:}

I can already tell from the trailer that this has a promising future. The artwork is beautiful, and the game's concept is interesting; it surely is something that would be worth to give a try when it has a release. Not to mention that you have some pretty good music team.

I'm looking forward to see a footage from this game, or maybe even a release!
Windowless ride, feeling alive
Are you alive or just breathing?
It really looks like something great is being put up, just like I was expecting. :3 I was expecting to see a bit of the gameplay to be shown, but I'm assuming it's still beta/you guys are keeping it as a surprise for a bit longer, so it's okay. I'm really impressed with the concept, it's pretty deep and also creative. Know that you've made some good choices for the composing team, hopefully your team will accept it sometime.

It's definitely something I'll be keeping track of. Good luck to you guys!
It's easily the best thing I've done
So why the empty numb?

Thank you for the feedback, The plan is that the game's artwork is this good quality, yes. And we have even attempted to work with 4K res, BUT it was too heavy for us to handle in our poor computers :<
That is a shame, as it would allow me to do much more detail in the graphics.

This seems pretty, though the trailer shown more the name of the project itself than in-game. Good luck with the project!

Just wondering, though I don't know much about 4K, can't your team add support for 4K but render at other resolutions too, so less resources get wasted at testing? Pretty sure today with high resolution textures and polygon system will do the trick if you run the game later at 4K.

Thank you Vitor. The game is still early in development, in the programing part atleast, as the game concept is done longer before. So no gameplay for now, we got little of it done by now, but there will be more soon.

About the resolution, I don't quite get what you mean, if it is about making it at a lower resolution that still run at 4K then it is possible and it is what we are doing at the moment. If it is about working at 4K graphics and then lowering the quality so it works on the engine then it is possible as well, but it would give us extra work that we don't want to have right now. We haven't ditched the idea though, we are just waiting for some more budget.

I really like the art style! And the game concept itself sounds very original; I just hope it's just as fun to play as it is beautiful visually. #tb{'U'}

Good luck with this project!

This is one of the most original things I have seen in some time. That is amazing and the effort you put into this is excellent. The art is absolutely beautiful! I see that you tried to give it a "professional" look? Well, you did a great job there!

Hope this goes well. Good luck! #tb{:j}

Thanks a lot you two #w{=)}

As i said, i bring some goodies.
Final Hours Sketches! I've updated the first post with new stuff.

We need more art hacks.
Just wondering... What's this game made of? What's the main idea of this game? What's the plot? Will it be RPG, plattformer, or what? And who the hell made such beautiful songs?! This game's just great, and I haven't even played it... Please, oh please make a gameplay, at least a lil' one, with whatever you've got by now. Just let us now how the game looks, how is it... By the way nice art!

-Aki

Imma cat and I don't know why is this a spoiler...

This is no hack, it's one actual game >_>

Hey, this is a lot of questions, let give some answers then =)

The plot:
There is Hollow, there is one eye, and they will wander the world, but it ain't that simple. Can't go further then that without spoiling too much, but the plot is something that i worked with really care when writing and despite the looks, Hollow will be a mature game, something to make people think over.

Gameplay:
The game is a puzzle platformer, where you control Hollow and one floating eye. Hollow can interact directly with the envoirment and use the objects and the envoirment and enemies to cleverly solve the puzzle. At the same time you control TheEye to move and activate certain mechanisms to aid Hollow to proceed. Hollow can do many moves, but his main power is to transfer himself inside canvases and interact with it using his ink. TheEye can carry small objects, actvate far away levers, uncover hiden objects and more!
There are 8 levels divided into multiple areas, each having a set number of puzzles.

Music:
The song is called "The Poem for Everyone's Souls" from the Persona game series, and will be changed eventually once i manage to have SNN and Todd to compose an original soundtrack for the game.

Really thank you. We don't have enough content to show much gameplay, everything is still beta at this point, and the puzzles we have is still buggy, but if you like us on facebook, you can get to know if there is any gameplay update, and i'll make sure it will not take long #w{=)}

Thanks for your interest ^-^
================================================
EDIT:
Might atleast show a beta screenshot.

These are old graphics, and were changed to what you see on the video. Probably they will be used as placeholders to the rest of the first level and then changed later on.

Oh, I'm terribly sorry. I didn't realize this was an "actual" game. My statement was kinda general anyway. I wanted to type something quick to lift your mood and give you something quick and boosting but that obviously didn't pack out well.
From the surface this looks incredibly well polished and thought through. Even though you don't have that much yet, it looks pretty awesome. You've always been this artsy guy, which is a good thing.
From the looks of it you have a very clear vision of what you want to make. Which is a good thing too.
I really just wanted to post something general and uplifting and I was hoping to spark a discussion. That inevitably didn't happen because I made too quick of an analysis. So I'm sorry, what you have just looks great.
That's all I wanted to say.
