Because the old one sucked.

Clean title screen:

File select:

File erase:

To do:
- More cloud complexity on the left side
- More mountain complexity on the right side
- Stop being lazy and make more tiles to smooth out the left hills
- Fix the roof shadow because it's still too thick for my tastes
- Possibly raise the title 8 pixels (thus hogging more Map16)? I dunno. I'd like it to be in the center of the darkest sky color and just as evenly spaced from the top as the copyright is from the bottom. Y'know, because I'm a nut in more than one way.
- Fix that thick black outline in the U-C part of PRODUCTION. Disgusting.

Fun facts:
- Uses only two ExGFX files (180, 181)
- Uses about half the Map16 the old one did on page 3F

Open to comments and criticism. Going to bed.

It looks great. The only problem is that the text saying "MARIO A, MARIO B, etc" as well as "(c) 2009-2014 SMWC" has a wonky colour palette. Other than that, truly considered art.
Thumbs up on my end, especially once you get around to doing the todos you mentioned (and fix the text palette obviously).

Other than that, what are the palette and the tiles on the river (moat?) supposed to represent? That part looks kind of wonky to me.

Oh yeah, this looks quite nice

You mean the bridge above the cliff? Or what xD?

The tiles below it, actually. Looks like a mix of blue and brown that I can't really decipher.

Isn't that just shadow?
You're right though, if you look on the top, you can see the cliff going behind the castle, so below it you should actually see the wall of the cliff there.

Throwing out an idea here: it'd be cool if the balloons were replaced with sprites that start out close together from the bottom of the screen and moved away from each other as they floated up. I guess.

I cannot say I am a fan of the title screen text palette especially with the white outlines used (not referring to the "An SMWCentral Production" part). Except that, the believe the title screen looks good enough for me.
Ignoring the font palette, it's looking quite nice. We could check how the font looks if we would invert the colours (white text, black outline). Maybe it would look a bit better. Other than that, it's a good title screen.
It looks pretty swell so far! I like the theme, and the palettes are fairly pleasing for the most part, if maybe a bit bright. The screen border may need a little more touching up or at least made more subtle, though, because it really stands out.

Also, a slight art nitpick: I think the "P" in Production should be made a little fatter to be more consistent with the rest of the letters in the word, like so:

But yeah, this is already worlds better than the original title screen. Keep it up!
I don't know, I really liked the original title screen. It was a really really good image. I think if we're going to use it, "1.5" should be put beside it (unless we are getting rid of the original entirely).

As for it itself:

a) I really love the border, that's probably the best part of it. However, the yellow is way too bright, you cannot see the yellow star inside of it. Consider making the yellow colour lighter, making the star a different colour or just making that particular star darker.

b) The background seems a bit basis. I know you want to add more too it but I would definitely make it much darker at the bottom, not make the path all one solid colour, more light and shade, etc.

c) The balloons' shading seems a bit weird. I like the roundness at the top but I think you need to smooth out the darker parts. ALso, I wouldn't make the whole circle of the balloon white - maybe at the bottoms of the balloons it could be darker?

d) The letters seem very pixally to me. I think you should space them out more - they look squashed as is. In particular, the Cs and Es are bothering me.

Still, it's very nice so far, and certainly a nice way to comer-ate the difference between this hack and the original.

See: this picture: There's a brick wall leading down towards the moat.

Stuff about black text with white outline
I did it that way to make it consistent with the title since the inconsistency of the other way really bothered me, but if everyone wants white text with black outline, consider it done.

That's completely beyond my capabilities but if someone else wants to do it once I hand it off to the project, it's more than welcome. Mental note to enable layer priority on the overworld border for this.

Yeah, that looks a lot better.

Will make the yellow a little darker and maybe adjust the other colors. The palette is shared with the title so I'll have to switch it to another palette out if it makes the title too dark.

Partially declined. Mario's all about being bright and simple - I feel like we'd be back to square one if we made it darker and more detailed since that led to complaints about the original title screen being too gloomy. The theme of this is a princess's birthday. I will, however, add a little bit of grass texture. If the whole thing gets any darker, it's going to be a baby step.

Will consider replacing them with a light color along the bottom, but definitely not black because it looked horrible this way.

It'll eat up a lot more graphics space to do this and I'd like to try to stay within two files. The SMB truetype font prints with letters often overlapping a little and that led to a little bit of crud here and there at this small size so there's obviously still work to do on it.

Absolutely not including 1.5 in the title. A version number is not part of a title. If anything, it's a footnote or a "readme" filler.

Double post (zomg power abuse!!1)

Fixed title font and menu/copyright text (it's not as bad as I thought it would look,) added decorations, made it less repetitive, changed balloons a little, toned down the border colors a little, but now I have two "ground" palettes to choose from:

original

"slightly darker"

I still personally favor the left one; it just seems more happy to me and I think the grass goes a lot better with the sky and clouds.

e: on the other hand, I like the roof palette of the second one and think I should combine it with the first one... I dunno, I could go through three dozen palettes before I'm satisfied

Welp, I actually liked the original title. This one looks really good though (and also fits better with the hack itself actually).

I think I prefer the right one, I don't like that bright green too much (it doesn't feel as grass-y as the other one imo), and personally I find that the slightly darker one fits just as nicely.

Lol, we have the same opinion. :P (I like the original intro too and if the new intro is used, then the colours of the right picture should be used)

Okay, my layout looks ugly.
I also think the original one was great. Definitely prefer it to this one (not that this one is bad).
I hope the balloons actually float upwards and animate!
I mean that wouldn't really be hard (if they don't, I can make them do that).

I should have something witty to put here (even if it's just to update dated info), shouldn't I?

Advertising Space

I for one wasn't expecting a title so quickly.

Huge improvement, the left one is definitely the way to go in terms of palettes. Very good job!

<Adam> holy shit
<Adam> counterfeit did a nice job
<eXcavator> yeah
<leod> I actually think the grass is way too pastel
<leod> hurts my eyes trying to read the text
<Adam> if you darken it a little and give it more definition
<Adam> the grass would look perfect i think
<Binrazan> yeah, maybe some more contrast
<Binrazan> make it a bit darker, along with the shade color of the green
<Binrazan> besides that I love the sky
<Binrazan> the actualy SMWCENTRAL PRODUCTION could use some AA of some sort
<Binrazan> looks a bit rough
<Binrazan> actual*

I think the palettes on the right are less eye-searing. :P

Also, the strings of the balloons that are against the darkest part of the sky are actually lighter than the sky and it looks a little funky, but I could swing either way on that one.

Again, good job so far!
