So, unless the original author comes back, I'd really like to take a crack at this level since I have a pretty cool concept for it. Basically, an athletic lava cave level, in fitting with the title.

The level has a ton of issues though, it's very cramped, full of item babysitting, the cave story graphics really clash with the ones we're going to use, and the Running Hell port is super overused. Definitely not a fit for world 3 difficulty-wise, or really theming-wise either.

What I'd like to do is:

- Keep some of the Cave Story themeing
  - Particularly I'd like to take some of the Hell elements and match them up with the SMWCP2 style, to use as decorations in a cave tileset
  - Also, would like to find some less-aggrivating cave story enemies that better fit world 3. Perhaps even a non-shooting variant of the ones used in the level.
- Replace the music. As good a song Running Hell is, it's an overused port and a world 3 level isn't really climactic enough for it.
- As said above, an athletic lava/cave level, but I'll try not to focus on skull rafts.
- I'd like to particularly use digging chucks. They're my favorite chargin' chuck variant, and might work to give the level a ruins excavation theme as well.

Like I said, I don't want to get rid of the cave story themeing entirely, as it's the original author's intent, but the level needs a sweeping overhaul, and the style really clashes with the art style we'll be working towards. Any thoughts?

So basically, Oh Man! It's Hell! in name only?

Well, there would be a real problem with keeping the original design, and the cave story graphics are going to clash super hard once we're redone all the other graphics.

I could try building a level out of them, but I just don't think it would look as good.

Pretty sure we don't care about graphical consistency between stages in this project as much as in SMWCP2 and I thought we were meant to keep general themes?
Especially since the author isn't exactly here.

e: oh didn't see you'd try to make the new tileset be inspired by the cave story one, that seems better already.

I always thought the theme did not fit in World 3. Would it be best to move this level to World 8 and take one of World 8's levels to World 3? (while obviously toning down the difficulty in the latter and raising the difficulty in the former.)

Anyway, I don't have much more to add more than that. The one thing I say is that if you are removing the Running Hell theme, replace it with the Star Fox (SNES) - Corneria theme. It suits athletic lava areas well imo.

Your plan sounds good to me. I don't think this level will work without a full overhaul.

Just an update:

Tileset is good to go (ignore the background. Not quite sure why that's happening, since I deleted it. probably due to having all the BGs set to skip file.)

I'm geared up to start the actual level design now.

Tileset is pretty nice except for the rocks, I think. They're very plan, especially compared to the very detailed solid blocks beside them. I'd probably introduce a lot more shade into the rocks. Other than that, good job.

I think the rocks look fine, personally. It might be nice if you added a decoration or two in them (e.g. bigger rocks, crystals, etc) but the pattern/shading seem good to me.
The only problem I can see with the rocks and the blocks is that the blocks are a hell of a lot "brighter", while the rocks are kind of dull.
I'd probably adjust one of the two to be closer to the other in colour.
