Tip: Layer 3 backgrounds and tides disappear when you hit a message box, so plan your level around that. For example, you can add a sublevel without layer 3 at the start/midpoint, and include your message there. Not logged in.

Since I really haven't seen a thread for this yet, and it's a pretty decent topic we should have a questions thread for it.

Post your level modelling / sketchup questions here.

This isn't really a question, more of a tip, Mario's exact size when using a scaling of 1 in your level is 333'x333' for the base and 555' height. but don't make tunnels with these dimensions, they cause minor glitches that do no harm but they don't look normal at all. Like if you crawl in a tunnel that small then mario appears on top of the tunnel, in a seemingly random orientation. He can't actually stay up there (To my knowledge so far) once he stops crawling he goes back.

Which version is better for modelling anyways? I use Sketchup Pro 2014.. but is Sketchup 8 better?

Also, when I model my levels and import them, they show up as a garbled mess. The level looks fine though when in sketchup..
Sketchup 8 I personally prefer, i've never really used 2014. I guess it's all up to personal preference.

Does it only do so in toads tool? If so, use the new version 0.6.2s by skelux of toads tool. If it looks like that even in game, use a different .obj exporter plugin or use the built in depending on what you have / use already.

Everything I'm using is new..so I'm using 6.2S..and Objimporter 1.9.1S. It shows up like that in tt64, and in the importer.

However I'll probably need to use Sketchup 8 because I think it's the triangulation that's causing the problem, given the plugin isnt compatible for 2014.
Yeah they had re-written the plugin sketchup for 2014 so you can;t use old plugins. Which is why I prefer 8.

Alright, then I'm going to use Skp8 and show my results.
Alright good luck!

I also recommend v3 of Tig's OBJ Exporter Plugin. You have to register free to download, but it's a ton better than whatever frauber provided back in the day.

Where do I put it so I can use it in Sketchup? I don't remember D:

My level has been imported and the deathfloor isnt killing me. I just need to know, why are my textures being stretched, even though they show up fine in sketchup?

Make them bigger, they cannot repeat more than 32 times on a face or else they'll be stretched.

Textures cannot repeat more than 32 times on a single face, so select the texture from the texture menu and sketchup, and increase the size in the texture editor so it dosen't repeat 32 times.

Go to your sketchup installation folder and put it in the plugins folder if there isn;t one, make one.

You don't have to put it anywhere if it's a .rbz file. Just install it in Sketchup 8 by going to Window > Preferences > Extensions and clicking 'Install Extension'. After that, open up the .rbz file you downloaded and it should install automatically. Reboot Sketchup and the new plugin should now be under File > ObjExporter...

I got ninja'd like three times, sorry #ab{:P}
I set it by mistake to be openable in 7Zip, and when I open it it have the OBJexporter.rb inside it, which is the same thing that I had before

You may already have the plugin, but replace it anyway just in case. The plugins folder should be in your Sketchup 8 directory, like MilleniumLuigi said. If you're not sure where, try looking in C: > Program Files (x86) > Google > Google Sketchup 8 > and Plugins.
I used the Triangulate plugin on some custom courses but now the textures look strange ingame. So, i've got a question, how to untriangulate a model that was triangulated with the Triangulate Plugin ?

Ctrl+Z
If you've already closed it since you finished modelling, you're out of luck.

get the "cleanup" plugin for sketchup.
triangulating shouldn't cause that. You need to make sure the same texture dosen't repeat of 32 times per face. go to the texture editor in sketchup and resize them until they are big enough to not repeat more than 32 times.
