(the name of this hack is just a placeholder until i can think of a better name.)

anyway, welcome to this kaizo hack thread! this hack is called the "new" special world, and may change if i think of a better title.

the story is as follows: an unknown force has altered the special world, and is now unknown what is to take place there. curious, mario goes and see what happened to that once peaceful place...

here are some screens right now:

Seems easier for a Kaizo hack so far. You're likely going to make it harder later, so it's all fine; just make sure you're going to have certain resources pose a real threat to Mario all the time. By the looks it serves well as a savestateless hack. The palettes are really nice btw, and I like how this is one of the Kaizo hacks that is going to introduce dragon coins to add to the mix. Good luck with this, I'm looking forward to more!

It's good that you going back into the kaizo-hacking business. Anyways, onwards to the screenshots!

(Those palettes though!) It's a first that are introducing Dragon Coins into the hack, so that'll be interesting. I am (as well) looking forward to more!

Something cheesy, though... On the screenshot that says "???'s House" and on the other, it says Yoshi, you may want to clear it, or put question marks. I just noticed, that's all.

I like it!

thanks for the comments, guys! i will continue working on this hack daily.

in the meantime, i have new screens:

On the 3rd screenshot that you have, maybe put in an invisible coin block right next to the player staring up. Also, is it intentional that you get shrunk by the first monty mole on the 5th screenshot?

One more thing... is this another level on its own?

i already put a platform there and 2 invisible coin blocks right next to the 3-up moon.

and yes, it is intentional to get hit from the mega moles that appear in front of mario. that's why i put 2 mushrooms; pretty much item abuse.

only...the mega moles seem to start going right instead of left. don't know what could be causing it, so if this issue persists, i'm going to have to delete the mega moles and replace them with something else, like munchers.

this is the same level, just a sublevel of it.

Liking the response time though.. hehe

Anyways, maybe you can change the idea of the Mega Moles into precision jumps. Or maybe running through muncher via invincibility frames. Not sure, but I know you'll have something in mind.

yeah, i'll try precision jumps with munchers, or inviciblity frames while dodging certain obstacles. thanks!

i just noticed we both have ghostly avatars...

I might be getting this wrong, but does that sublevel have a Mega Mole on the screen you start? Certain sprites tend to have a weird, uh, "glitch" where they face right instead of left sometimes - I experienced this problem before and got an explanation. No worries, it happens all the time.

Anyway, I'm liking the screens. Maybe you could either have an use for the Mega Mole rather than taking a hit or keep it as it is. It's your choice.

Well, you can always try applying this. It'll make sprites always move toward Mario when spawned.

Anyway, the hack looks pretty nice so far. I'm interested to see what you plan on doing with the Mega Moles.

thanks, Thomas! i have applied the patch, and the mega moles now are facing mario. now i can apply my technique! #smw{:TUP:}

update: preview of level 2 - obnoxious:

first screenshot shows mario's starting point, while the last screenshot shows mario spin-jumping on the podoboo to reach the platform above.

That's what I'm talking about! I really like it!

Some things though: Are you supposed to take the robotic dragon (I forgot what they were called) up to the platform? Also, are you going to add more precision jumps?

One last thing: you start off with 1 life?

The level turned out to be good so far, though I'm also wondering if you're going to use the Mecha-Koopa for something else in it? Those precision jumps are kinda annoying to get past, but that could be just me. Keep on workin'!

Those are called MechaKoopas.

you spin-jump on the vertical fireball to get to the platform high above; i'll try to add some mechakoopa use as well.

i'll try to see if i can add more precision jumps in different ways. in some of them, i'll try to make players avoid obstacles while doing precise jumping.

no, just me losing... #smw{x_x}

thanks, Katerpie! i will try to use the mechakoopas in unique ways, such as a mechakoopa hitting a block to progress through the level.

preview of a new level - amazing:

i know that the shell-jumps are avoidable by jumping, since the ledges aren't too far from each other; i'm currently fixing that.

i have 2 questions regarding kaizo hacks:

1. you know you can create boxes that have skulls on them as a map16 tile that kills the player instantly? how would i make them? and the same with sideways munchers.

2. are silent bullet bills allowed in kaizo hacks?

--------------------

I can answer the 1st question. You have to add the block behavior from the blocks section, and the skull box, you do the rest. I just take the skull from the bullet bill tower, and make it a block.

For sideways munchers-in YY-CHR, find the Muncher GFX (in GFX 33) save the Muncher tiles in a new ExGFX file, flip them 90 degrees, and then ExAnimate them in LM after inserting (there are ExAnimation tutorials if you need them).
Second question: Oh yes. In fact, lots of Kaizo hacks have them. All part of the "everything trying to kill you" aspect. I never did quite get why they weren't allowed in normal hacks even tho Beezos from SMB2 would get a free pass.

How am I so creative? I think taking walks might have something to do with it.
Every single level I will ever make in SMM2 will be easier than Ultra Necrozma.

i somehow couldn't find the muncher graphics in gfx33.bin, or in any of the graphics files, for that matter. #smw{o_O?}
