Whoa, let's slow down a bit there. I'm still not entirely certain if it's possible to have that many additional tracks. In its current state, YI Addmusic is only capable of replacing existing songs, not adding new ones. While adding more tracks to the game is possible in theory, I'd still have to look into it a bit more, and even then we'll probably only be able to add 1 -- maybe 2 -- extra tracks (which will likely be the cave theme and rng's alternate grassland theme).

One important thing I'd like to stress about this project is that we can't get too ahead of ourselves. As cool as having a bunch of custom music tracks might be, we also need to be aware of the limitations and be prepared to work around them.

That being said, if I can figure out a way to add even more custom tracks to the game, I'll let you guys know. But for now we shouldn't assume that to be the case.
Mmm, I was under the impression after our IRC talks that there was in fact a way to do it via SPASM (eg. manually insert the song data, call the pointers, play via an address similar to SMW's $1DFB). I guess I missed the fact that this was all theoretical - my bad. Even still, there are tracks like the intro level theme and one of the boss themes we can replace, so there is at least room for a couple more.

Well if there is a way to do it via SPASM I'm not aware of it :P (As I said I still have to look into it more)

Well part of the problem is that only songs 0 - F can be selected from the header editor in GE. Slots E and F are the only free ones (hence, no more than 2 extra tracks). By default, the training theme isn't on there, and iirc the only way to use the training theme in a normal level is via a hex edit that hijacks slot E to play the training level music. So either way, we'd only have 2 free slots to work with.

As for sacrificing one of the boss themes... that could theoretically open up a 3rd music slot. (I'd personally prefer to keep both of the boss themes, but eh, I'll hear what others have to say first :P)

You mean you weren't there for any of the many, many times it was brought up?

Looking through the music list in GE, there are two entries for "In front of bosses room". Any chance we could replace that second entry somehow?

You're right -- although I believe the duplicate entries are actually needed. YI actually groups multiple songs in the same SPC bank, so one of the "In front of bosses room" slots contains the mini-boss theme, and the other contains the big-boss theme.
There's actually 3 copies of that song, and no, we shouldn't replace them unless it's for a new version of that song- 4-E uses 0D, 1-8 uses 07, and 2-4 uses 03. None of them are alike- if I'm correct, using 03 or 07 disables using items from the pause screen, while 0D doesn't. 0D's an exception due to this, so we could replace it if no one's going to use it in their level, but we can't assume no one will.

In other news, I started a theme of sorts today. Not really sure where it will fit (I had started it with 6-1 and 6-6 in mind), but comments are welcome all the same. I'll probably finish it tomorrow.

Sounds like it could be a fitting regular cave theme. It also seems like it would really suit ice and sky levels to some degree. (mostly sky)
Hmm, that is a very good theme so far, SNN. It's fitting for many levels, I must admit.

Think you could do a Final Castle theme or a new Haunted theme when you're done with that snow-ish theme? It would be best to have these themes because many themes are haunted. And just having a regular castle theme in a final castle kinda ruins the atmosphere of a "Final Castle".

This sounds really nice, SNN. I like the layering thing you did with the flute + harmonica toward the end -- very YI-esque. I agree with ZeNewDragon; this could fit cave levels quite nicely.
I actually kinda think it sounds rather general purpose for all your dark level needs. I'm thinking this would fit a night level as well as a cave.

Sounds pretty sweet.

So this is like 20 years late, but does anyone at all have interest in still doing custom music? I doubt the people that originally signed up are still going to finish anything, but we could use the ported/written tracks if people like em.

The deadlines will be tight on these, say 1 or 2 months.

I think we should keep the original music as, IMO, its some of the best Mario music of the series and it would take loads of work to even come close to it.

Personally, I think custom music would be a massive draw for this hack. If we can get a complete soundtrack of the same quality as the 4 or so tracks we have so far, I'd say we should definitely go for it.

Jimmy's jungle music especially is incredible and I'd hate to see it go to waste.
I will see what I can do about adding additional tracks accessible via level header's music.

Yeah, the tracks we have so far are totally awesome, but if it's still not enough and nobody wants to make anything than I'm personally fine with simply leaving the remaining songs from the original game as-is as well.

If I was a composer I'd happily compose an original theme. If anyone out there can compose but can't port, send me your MIDI compositions and I'll arrange them, I'm a great instrument arranger and can work off almost anything. Be mindful tho, it has to be able to function on 8 channels at the very least for me to do my magic.
