SMWC's Touhou Tournament - Contest Over

  • Pages:

Because so many people here have taken interest in the vertical danmaku shmup series Touhou, Reimu has planned a competition and shared the details with me. The details are as follows:

Categories
Embodiment of Scarlet Devil - top score
Perfect Cherry Blossom - top score
Imperishable Night - top score
EoSD/PCB/IN - top score (accumulative)

Rules - Revised May 17, 2008
EoSD: Normal, Reimu A
PCB: Normal, Reimu A
IN: Normal, Reimu/Yukari team, Final B (vs. Kaguya)

-Each person will have until June 14 to play through any of these games until s/he gets a score s/he is satisfied with. Then, they s/he post a link to the relevant replay (.RPY) which will be reviewed by either me or Reimu for verification. The replay is more important than posting the score, since it is proof of your claim.

-You may only post one replay per game. Any thereafter will be considered invalid. (In other words, one EoSD replay, one PCB replay, one IN replay. Your first is your last, and you can not change. Editing your post will be considered suspicious, so that is discouraged. If you switch a link to your replay with an updated one, you will be disqualified. It is okay to post a mirror link to a replay as long as it is exactly the same, hence the word mirror.)

-Posting a link to someone else's Touhou replay will result in immediate disqualification.

-Screenshots do not count as substitutes for replays.

-You do not need to sign up - as long as you have a replay to show and can get it in before the deadline, you can participate. All that being said, even if you never played Touhou before, you may still enter the contest and have some time to adapt to the game and get a decent score.

-No exceptions to these rules.

Edit: Since using a continue interferes with your final score and disables you from making a replay, videos are not considered valid replacements for replays.

Rewards
To be announced.

Deadline
June 14, 2008 - 3:00 PM EST

Just look above you...
If it's something that can be stopped, then just try to stop it!
I might join, but I'll have to see what kind of competition here is before I give it a go. I'm not really that good, even though I like Touhou a lot. I just play it sometimes for a break, while it's more the story and musical part of it all that has me fully addicted.

If the scores aren't too legendary all over, I'll join. ;p

Just had to ;) Quite amazing considering how long it was since OP.

When you say you must show a replay, do you mean posting it on youtube and putting a link to that youtube video? Cause I would like to enter but I don't know how to record anything on my computer.

If you don't use any continues (end the game when offered to continue) you get to save a replay file. These can be viewed in Touhou, so you just need a place to upload it. Size is usually 10-50 kB.

So you dig for your replay in the replay folder, upload the replay somewhere and just post it?

So...
We have until June 14 to get a high score at:
Quote
PCB: Normal, Reimu A
IN: Normal, Reimu/Yukari team, Final B (vs. Kaguya)

Can we choose another difficulty higher than the one that's specified, or do we only have to play Normal?
PCB and IN? Count me in. Though, I've never beaten them.
I'm very disappointed you didn't include EoSD on this list. It was like, the only one I've actually mastered :( I suck at PCB.

But yea, stickied the thread. I'd like to try IN sometime before the deadline and see if I can actually do something out of it (lol at that thought)
I guess I'll join. Can't hurt.
Can we choose what character we want to play with, or at least play with Reimu B in PCB? Her A is kinda weak.

Also, Kagami, it's fixed as is so that the scoring opportunity is equal for everyone. In addition, It is ReimuA specifically because Reimu's attack in Imperishable night reflects that of ReimuA in the two prior games.

The Homing Ice Cube seems to be a bit of a fan favorite, as it (and its predecessor) has been in service for nearly 15 years now. Just something I've noticed.

But the lack of a visible hitbox is doom...

[imo] The lack of a visible hitbox is one of the best things in Touhou and shooters in general.

Speaking of touhoustorm, I actually posted a score there. I fell in at the halfway point, and I realized it isn't as hard to score in tEoSD as I thought... I'm just clumsy and a bit *too* risk-taking. I was using MarisaB.

About this, isn't it better to always consider the latest/best replay? As it is now, noone will post anything until the last day.

Sure, you (the judges) will only have to review the final replay submitted after the contest ends. I think it would be more competetive if people could submit their scores w/replay without using it as their final decision. If people even choose to do so is a different matter.

And what reason would that be? Just to hinder people from linking replays in this thread?

Highwind, no, that rule is in place for a reason.

If you wouldn't mind explaining it, I think maybe it would be more clear.

Also, I actually *didn't* fall into the half-way point. I should have looked again...
Some big reasons:

- The thread will be easier to maintain if someone submits only one score, as we can easily find it and add it to the first post. Now, if we didn't do that, and it turned into a postfest of replays, then we'd have to search for the most recent replays all the time, edit the main post all the time, and for the people who only submitted one, their post would be harder to find if there are too many posts to go through.

Sample scenarios: We get a lot of people who keep editing their posts all the time, either saying "Edit: I updated my replay" and having their next replay be somewhere else in the thread other than in the said post, or just talking in general to make the thread grow, or people editing an old post in the middle of a thread with an updated replay replacing an old replay, which can easily be overlooked.

- Reimu has a life, and I have lots of other things to be doing for SMWC than just watching replays all day. It will save us both a ton of time if we watch the replay and verify the score immediately when we see a replay linked.

tl;dr: It's so that the replays stay easy to find and so that Reimu and I still have time for other things.

Just look above you...

Though, as I said, you don't need to watch a single replay until the end of the contest. But about the editing and posting replays several places is a good point. Some may not state clearly enough that an old replay is not their final replay.

Even if that's really just their own little problem.

I'm going to avoid being a jerk like I probably would, because I'm used to having to copy and paste and copy and paste and pick here and there, and I have other things to do as well. So does everyone else who joins me.

That makes sense. Of course, you could also have everyone upload their replay on touhoustorm and link it from there. It already gets the score, so you don't have to. Then just do whatever.
Ah, it's here. Guess common sense can apply sometimes.

Uh, hello. I'm a bit of a "noob" at this, but I'll try my best. Right now I'm trying to surpass pikaguy (if he's still where he said he was, I'm beating him!). Maybe I should go read those rules now.

Edit: Oh, it's for tEoSD.

Edit2: Uhoh, it's cumulative between 6, 7, and 8...
