The Maze Game II (Expansion released!)

This is a simple maze game I made. I can't find the first maze game as my CPU crashed. I know the graphics are bad, but I made them in MSPaint and I suck at using it. </excuse> So please don't make a post only to say how the graphics are mediocre. Also, this is a free standing game (a.k.a This isn't using anything as a base).

The goal is to get to the goal square. Unfortunately, enemies, switches, and other obstacles block your way. I will try to sum up the game in as few screens as possible. Also, not everything in the game is summarized in the following screens. Captions are below the relative screen.

Also, level design gets better as the game progresses.

Get to the black goal box to progress to the next level. The trigger blows up all breakable walls that are next to a bomb.

Red spiked balls move horizontally, and black spiked balls move vertically. They both make you restart the level when hit. Whenever you get hurt by an enemy or restart the level by pressing "R", you lose a point. You start out with 500 points, and they go in to negatives if you suck hard enough at video games. Also, you can see that the goal is blocked by a steel door. You have to collect every key to unlock the door.

The brown boxes with arrows on them are push blocks. They can be pushed into holes, making new pathways for the character.

Make it to the goal square before you get crushed by the moving spike ceiling.

CONTROLS
--------
Left arrow key = Move Left
Right arrow key = Move Right
Down arrow key = Move Down
Up arrow key = Move Up
R = Restart

Also I'm aware that some levels let you go off-screen. I set it so you die if you do.

At the first screen, I saw the stone GFX and thought, hey this can't be that bad for a first game. Then I saw that was the floor instead of the wall :/

The GFX clash majorly (ironic considering everyone complains about this for SMW hacks), and the lack of outlines make some things confusing. However, by the looks of it, it all works, so congrats on getting the events and actions working correctly. If you need any help, there are a lot of GM users around that I know of (I'm not an expert by any means, but you can ask me for help too).

BTW, GM has a built-in GFX editor, and while it ain't photoshop, I'd say it's an improvement over MS paint. Plus, you can load in spritesheets and it can make them into animations (only if the sprites are lined up well though).

lucas hater

Thanks for the comment. The sad part is, this is my second game. D:

I guess the GFX is bad, and I might put outlines on the walls. As you can see, graphics are not too important, unless they're eyesores/affect gameplay.

And I'd rather keep the main character the same as I did in the first Maze Game.

lucas sucks btw

meh. You should use sprites. The graphic clashes way too... clashing(is that even a word? <_<)

And I can see you want to use the same "hero" as in your first game, but please at least try to use somebody else.
like... like Link. You could use Link from aLttP. And if you add other 32bit graphics, it would look much awesomer(I don't think that's a word ether. <_____<).
I'm actually pretty good with MS Paint (whenever I do graphical edits, this is the first thing I go to), but you don't seem to know how to use it, so...

Use GM's built in graphics maker. And don't make the graphics so quickly, it looks like you drew every single graphic here in 5 seconds. :P

The level design itself looks pretty fun, but it will be hard to play if you don't make the colors more varying.
It's not even close to Halloween, and already Christmas Sales are starting early!
I know screenshots aren't enough to capture the level design of a game, so I released a demo. This demo has:

-30 levels
-10 Worlds (3 levels per world)
-2 bosses
-A multitude of puzzles and enemies

It exits itself once you beat the second boss. This game is possible, I just beat it. Well, good luck and please post feedback.

The link to the demo is in the first post.
This game reminds me of chips challenge.

--Demo is..Impossible. Do you know why? Because the download doesn't start. Q_Q

*Nevermind. Loaded in ie = Win.

Alright..I beat it..I think.

After I'm not sure how many levels, I got this error, and it closed down.

So yeah. It wasn't that bad, just a bit too repetitive. Could you also post the soundtrack for it? =]

*Also, if you stay on one level long enough, the music stops. :[*

MasterPenguin: That happens when you beat all of the levels. And I'll post the soundtrack for you (too lazy to link).

They're all midi's.

World 1: Trooper (Iron Maiden)
World 2: Carry on Wayward Son (Kansas)
World 3: Porcupine Tree (Wedding Nails)
World 4: Airship Level (MKDS)
World 5: Dr Wily's Castle (Megaman 2)
Boss 1: Smorg Battle
World 6: Stickerbrush Symphony (DKC2)
World 7: Dire Dire Docks (SM64)
World 8: Chapter Four (Avenged Sevenfold)
World 9: Knights of Cydonia (Muse)
World 10: Duality (Slipknot)
Boss 2: Rambi Rumble (DKC2)
World 11 (Not in demo): One (Metallica)
That demo link.....leads here? WTF?

EDIT: NM. I got it working. It's pretty fun.
I bought a cactus. A week later it died. And I got depressed, because I thought, Damn. I am less nurturing than a desert. -Demetri Martin.

I'll add this to the first post.

I don't know why this happens when the link is clicked. This other method should work soon.

Also, expect new screenshots soon.
Looks fun. Gotta try it tomorrow.

EDIT: Still could test it now, and there's already one thing: Did you intentionally leave the Hotkeys for saving and loading (F5 and F6) in?

Otherwise; game looks quite funny with all those 'MS Paint'-ish GFX in there. The smiley you play makes me laugh. :)
More screenshots:

The purple square above is called a reverse panel. When the player comes into contact with it...

...he turns into his reversed form. In this form, his colors are inverted, as are his controls. To return to your normal form, hit a reverse panel while you're in reversed form.

This looks difficult...

Also, if anyone is interested, here is a support userbar for The Maze Game II. It is free to use, and it links back to this topic.

Nice game, and just gotta say: nice, you put in Wily's theme for Mega man 2. Good job.
Any more updates coming? o.O

Well, I finally finished the Maze Game II. The link to the full version is in my first post. It has:

-20 Worlds (10 not in the demo)
-60 Levels (30 not in the demo)
-4 Bosses (2 not in the demo)
-A varied soundtrack
-Many puzzles to overcome.

And yes, the level design gets better as the game progresses. Good luck. If you beat it, post your final scores here. I'll probably make a video playthrough later.
I just got 467 points.

I noticed a glitch though. The character moves in the last direction pressed at the start of a level even if you press it before the level starts.

What the hell are you talking about? This isn't a joke. You probably never played the demo.

Anyway, I recorded a playthrough of the entire maze game. I know the final boss got cut off a bit at the end due to hypercam's level of fail, but eh. Read the video description before commenting. Link is in the first post.
