Winter C3 discussion thread

Maybe we should have kept C3 annual instead, with a more focused and well planned theme and more exciting releases, but whatever, I still enjoyed it (mostly because I was making userbars all day, though).

When I voted for biannual, I really thought about half an year was more than enough time to plan things for C3, but I don't know, maybe something happened behind the scenes that we're not aware of. Anyway, thinking about it, we had a decent amount of threads (and replies) this time, although most of them had minor releases.

Some categories will have very few (although not bad at all) options though, like Best Finished Hack... Maybe we should discuss the annual/biannual thing again, if necessary...

Agreed. A few months doesn't really seem like enough time to set up something as great as it can possibly be. Like the best thing I've seen here besides Underway's userbar thing was the SpriteTip thing ViVi made but even that isn't really "revolutionary".

I noticed that quite a lot of threads are being left in the dust because of the lack of a ropebox (Mine and a "good" friend of mine included)... unless that's the punishment for voting for biannual C3 events. I doubt it's the fact that it's annual or biannual, I think the mods decided to not include it this time to get C3 overwith. Hopefully in the summer, things start to heat up (no pun intended).

No seriously though, go check out Evilguy's "Mighty Luigi Force" release thread, it almost got to the top 3 in the "12 Days Before Christmas" contest last year, and we now have an extended version of that entry. Koodos to him for actually completing a hack for C3.

(rip my other userbars momentarily)

I expected the ropebox to show up in this C3 like it did last time as well but for some reason it didn't. I wonder what happened for it to not appear this time because a lot of threads were left unnoticed?

Overall, it turned out to be a fun event like always. The only thing that felt lacking besides the ropebox is that there weren't any big releases or anything, just smaller ones during that span of time. Despite that, most people's work were quite incredible, and I hope the next C3 is even better, I guess.

if you are preparing something big, you can easily ignore a c3 and release for the next one.

biannual c3 provides more options than an annual one. more options is good

most people only need a month or two to prepare something anyways (in my case, a few days)
I agree with Ladida on this one. I like the biannual C3 because we get more releases and show-off threads more often, and if you're working on something really ambitious, you can just wait 6 more months for the next one.
I also like the biannul C3. It's like I get to know what other people are up to and working on even though I never spend time at their most visited forum parts. I feel like this connects our communities too, which is great since there's a lot of things most people (including me) miss out on and with this we don't have to wait a whole year to see what most people are up to. Of course digging through the forums will get you up-to-date too, but nobody does that. Just notice how many people are surprised with things our sm64 put together, or even a couple good fangames, homebrew games and whatnot. A ton of graphics I wouldn't have noticed otherwise has impressed me a lot too. I think the biannual C3 is a great idea, so I support it.

Also, not to mention the fact that when the C3 is at summer I can't ever participate, because I am going on vacation 9/10 times, which is unfortunate.

I like the biannual C3 as well. It gives me the chance to show off my stuff every six months instead of waiting a whole year. I hope we have two C3s next year.

I don't think this C3 was that bad, I just lacked some tool or patch release but on other side we had lot of music and misc stuff threads. Probably this one was lacked a bit planning, but nothing avoids from you improving it for the future, of course. Probably next Winter C3 will be better since people will start planning more for it.

Now I have a question: What would have happened with all releases if this C3 didn't exist? They wouldn't have existed too? Pretty sure yes.

It's C3? I hadn't noticed.
I view C3 as an event in which you get the opportunity to check other people's works on various things, small or big, and as such, I think this is a nice C3. There's a lot of little hacks to be played, sprites to be used and man, there's a lot of ports... But I'll admit that we didn't have too many inovation-tier things this time around.

I just really hope that we get some sort of gimmick event by the deadline or whenever. We're already without the ropebox and without the radio (MolSno tried to put it up, but apparently he had some issues :/).

Also my thread's buried to death already, even on my 75 TPP setup. :P
It's easily the best thing I've done
So why the empty numb?
Is there any chance we could keep the forum open until VLDC8 starts? I might want to comment on a few more threads during the week.

I've always seen C3 as little more than advertising space, to get yourself out there as I've noticed most users tend to ignore the smaller stuff at any other time of the year. Sure anyone could make a big release outside of C3, but it probably wouldn't garner as much attention when people aren't hyped up for a slew of new releases.

The forum will likely stay open for a week or so, so you'll still be able to post comments during that time.
Is it normal that you can still post comments after C3 is over?

Yes.

probably a side effect of the inability to create threads
