Mario & The Lord of Illusions - Sneak Peak!

Hello, everyone! This is my C3 thread, and unlike last time(s), I have more stuff to show.

This is my top-secret hack i've been telling people about, called "Mario & The Lord of Illusions". I have a couple things to show off, along with an IPS of the first 3 levels. Be careful, as they are not fully done or decorated yet. I'd thought you could get a quick sneak peak of it before releasing my own hack thread in the future.

Now then, enough of this chattering, let's get on with the storyline so far:

WARNING: CONTAINS SPOILERS. VIEW AT YOUR OWN RISK.

STORY:

It's Bowser's 1 millionth attempt at an evil plan to rule the Mushroom Kingdom, or worse, and Bowser's got something up his sleeve...Bowser plans to send Mario away to an uncharted island in the middle of Boss Bass Ocean, to be rid of Mario forever! Kamek, on the other hand, isn't very enthusiastic about Bowser's plans, and has confidence Mario will escape and defeat him somehow.

The next day, Mario wakes up and falls for Bowser's trap and sends him to this island. However, the island isn't an ordinary island. Mario goes in to investigate the area for clues on how to escape. He finds an ancient ruins in the woods, and at the end, finds a statue. Mario asks the statue how to get out of the island he is in, but the statue says it's too soon for him to leave, as the prophecy was expecting him. A giant earthquake occurs, and Mario rushes out of the forest.

When he gets out, the earthquake stops, and Mario seems to see...More land? It wasn't there before! Mario then sees a castle in the distance and then heads out to investigate the island, starting with a autumnus farmland. How will Mario escape said island? What is the secret of this island?

You can check out the cutscenes so far by clicking here. WARNING: May contain bad literature. View at your own risk.

-----

And that's the start of it all! Here are the world themes for this hack. (WARNING: SPOILERS. VIEW IF YOU DON'T MIND SPOILERS)

World 1: Rural (Instead of green grass, there's autumn colors instead!)
World 2: Medieval (Hear ye, for thou haveth not used this here theme!)
World 3: Savanna/Jungle (2 paths. Savanna, or Jungle?)
World 4: Ice/Cave (First half Cave, Second half Ice! Beautiful, isn't it?)
World 5: Sky/Mountain/Asian (I couldn't resist making an asian theme. They're beautiful.)
World 6: Desert/Canyon/Carnival (A carnival, Las Vegas styled!)
World 7: Dark/Haunted (Roll out the pipe organ!)
World 8: Bowser Land (It's the same old thing, but it's here for a reason. Be glad there's only 5 levels here.)

World Extra: Forest (But how do you get to this?)
World Secret: Abstract (Welcome to my fantasy world, Dreemon!)

What's that? You want to know what Dreemon is? Not now, that's another story for another day.

Enough of all this chitter chatter, i'll bet you want screenshots. Well, you got it! Here's the overworld, and some graphics I made!

First, the overworld:

The main map:

Now I know what most of you guys are thinking: (Whining person) "Ooh, but Falconpunch, the overworld's really empty! You can't do that! You need to add more things to it!"

After the event, the main map builds up like this and so on.

The forest will also change as you progress, but right now it's too minor to show off the other changes.

This is World 4's map so far. Beautiful, isn't it?

I've also done the events, shown here:

Now for a couple of graphics and other things i've done:

This is the forest graphics I made. There's 2 variants, but they're both incomplete, so just have 1.

This is a FG/BG I made for some W7 levels. Spooky, aren't they? (The background is complete, but the FG is not.)

Now then, if you want to play the first 3 levels yourself, click here for the IPS. There might be some bugs, but that's ok, since it's just here for the sake of testing.

I was gonna post screenshots, but I really don't want to clog up my files with a bunch of screenshot files.

So that's all the progress I can show with my hack, what do you think of it so far?

Also, one last thing: THIS IS MY 5000TH POST! LET'S CELEBRATE!

EDIT: Forgot to post an image, I added it now.

Speaking of the overworld concept, this is definitely something that should have been tried a while ago. It may feel awkward to see entire landmasses form as you play, but there's a certain element of surrealism to it I can't help but admire.
The graphics look great so far, though I'd probably have more to say if I play this and see them in action.

I should give this one a try.
I think you're revealing too many spoilers. A good description would be something that tells you the basis of it. Too much information = No interest because it's all already laid out like dinner. If that is seriously it, other than to play the levels, I wouldn't have much more motivation to honestly finish playing a hack like that since I know how it's going to end. I suggest you either:
• Scrap the current late story (with the beginning in exception) and try to come up with something else, because there's nothing to look forward to now. -_-
• Rework the story to differentiate from what you currently got listed due to the spoilers you have provided.
Sorry, but that's the only way to fix such a problem, which is big for people like myself who are motivated by deeper plots and related.

As far as your content goes, it's looking very nice; though it looks more like graphics show off than hack show off. Best map is world 4 by far, but the transition from Surface to Cave looks very bad. I suggest having the area's fade to black and then to the cave. As far as everything else goes, you've seen what I told you on the IRC. I'm very happy you took the time to actually draw out everything. Not very many hackers will do this, so it's a very commendable thing you've done.
The only thing that catched my eye was the first half of world 4 overworld, because it's colorful. I have no interest to play this in any other way. Try to use different colors and make your palettes more colorful, sticking to only one color will just get your map boring.
This is looking pretty nifty, I must say. Great concept for the overworld, and overall awesome-looking graphics.

Keep at it with this, you've done a very nice job so far.

Thanks for telling me about how the gimmick of the hack is original! And yeah, I decided to draw my own graphics cause I was tired of the old recycled graphics seen in hacks from the graphics section.

I was gonna show an animation of the parallax of that one background, but I couldn't really do it for a few reasons. I was also going to post this as a hack thread but it's not quite ready yet until World 1 is done.

It takes a long time to draw graphics so that's why progress is usually slow.

Sorry, but I really don't want to change the story. I CAN, however, put in spoilers for people who don't want to know it.

That aside, the transition definitely needed something good. Fading to black might work, if I can pull it off. And thanks for all your help in IRC before this came out. I appriciate it and I will ask for help if needed in the future.

It's supposed to be night time, SRH. Besides, it's a dark-ish cave. HOWEVER, when I add more decorations, I CAN make more colorful decorations, like colorful gemstones and crystals.

Thank you very much! I'm glad people like this gimmick of the overworld! Also, I really appriciate your love for my graphics, they usually don't turn out good, but practice makes perfect!

barring the very-present graphical issues, the second wall-spring in 1-3 didn't appear due to sprite limits on my first try, so you may want to fix that. otherwise, not half bad!

Want to see my Super Mario Timeline?
I like the contrast between the green and orange landmasses in the main overworld, and the World 4 submap is gorgeous. The concept of the OW building itself as you progress is also pretty nice.

I don't like the wavy water tiles very much though. The cutoff between them and the land edges is very noticeable. The original SMW had this problem as well, but it's far less obvious there.

special thanks to me btw #wario{:peace:}

THe Overworld building Idea Sounds.... AWESOME!
TurtleLuigi: Thanks.

Also, I just realized I forgot to add an image, that should attract more attention. What do you think of this Foreground/Background?

Hey, that hack looks pretty neat. I love the concept for the OW, I think I had that idea (or something similar) at some point too but never actually made a hack that could use it. (I'm so lazy etc blah)

Your graphics look great too, keep that stuff up!

...The one thing that does bug me is that this submap looks really weird. The individual top half / button half look good but the line in the middle is pretty ugly and doesn't make much sense to me.

This "transition" also bugs me, so I decided to make this:

Just an idea on how you could make that transition actually look like one. Basically, it's as if a vertical plane chopped the ground. I made this quickly in MS Paint, so ignore the cutoff's and etc. There are some suggestions though, if you plan to use my idea:

Yellow circle: put some kind of latter/scalable wall here;
Orange circle: put some kind of hole here;
Red X's: remove these objects, as they can't fit here anymore;
Green X's: I removed some stalactites that were here, because they were "chopped" by the imaginary plane (I hope that made sense, lol). Hit F5 if you can't see them.

Thanks, i'll definitely take your advice and change things around. Also, you weren't aware of this cause it was invisible, but there's a secret that also leads to the top half of the map. But I can do like you said again when I reveal events.

The trees are fine where they are, but that landmass can be changed a little so it's completely visible. After that is done, i'll add the rest of the detail such as those gemstones/crystals and whatever.

Looking good so far man. Your graphical skills have been improving. Keep up the good work ( and try to finish it this time) :P

Totally, practice makes perfect. And yes, i've gone a little too far to stop working on it. I've plenty of ideas to keep me busy, so no worries. SMWCI and PROBABLY the VLDC may slow me down, but i'm still workin' on it.

I just need to figure out this fucking ASM thing and then I can do pretty much anything.

Enough rambling, I have completed the W4 map, and here it is, in it's beauty:

And if you're curious, here are the events included:

That looks much better than that awkward thing in the middle you had at first. Great job!
