Mario can't walk (exactly what it says on the tin)

It was going to be non-Kaizo, and then a Kaizo thing, and then I revisited the first idea because I didn't want to make myself a liar, and to reach a wider demographic.
This was an interesting gimmick I thought of that completely changes everything about how this game is played. Mario can't walk left or right but he can still jump.
To compensate for the Nintendo hard difficulty as well as helping to not get too repetitive, the levels will be fairly short, about like SMB3, with no midway points. In addition, since it's fairly easy to get stuck, you can reset using L and R, and "dying" results in being reset back to the beginning, making lives meaningless.
Other than that, and using some hex edits, it's pretty much vanilla.
Rise over Run

The first level.

Mario comes to terms with his disability.

Rise over Run pt 2

Couldn't think of a better name. It was originally part of the first stage but I split it because I couldn't have Mario reset at a point other than the beginning. So it's sort of a harder reiteration of stage 1.

Chuck-toberfest

The number of levels will depend on how many ideas I can come up with, but I don't think this hack will be that long.

How am I so creative? I think taking walks might have something to do with it.
Every single level I will ever make in SMM2 will be easier than Ultra Necrozma.
This concept's been way underused from what I remember, so props to making creative segments while under that condition. Just make sure you add a few decorations, because it's looking a bit empty aesthetically if I'm honest (dunno if you will add powerups in this hack to compensate for the difficulty as well, but it's all up to you).

Ha! That's an interesting concept. It sounds just as fun as it could be frustrating. There are a lot of clever puzzles you could make with this idea.

Will you be sticking with vanilla sprites, or will you consider custom sprites for extra variety?

Oh good lord... This should be fun...

I'll add them.

I actually don't know for sure. If it's too hard without, then yes.

No custom sprites.

Oh this looks awesome! I would love to play this once it gets finished! If you ever need a play-tester for you hack, let me know! I'd be more than willing!

My god, Sokobansolver. How the hell do you come up with these awesome ideas? This is just great.
You're always impressing me, Sokobansolver. You have so much creative ideas... I've played hacks with "no-jumping" gimmicks, but I've never seen a "no-walking" gimmick. This looks promising, good luck on this!
Looks like this will be a easy, fun hack.
good luck

Quite interesting. I'm not entirely sure what good a reset feature would do in a hack that seems like puzzles can't really exist, but given your past works I'm expecting it to work out.

What happened to other hacks that you were going to release though? Luigi's Challenge I haven't heard much of and Mario Must Die 2 has been complete for a few weeks now, but I haven't seen anything about its release.
I got a feeling this will be fun to play! Will there be any level with lines and platforms?

Probably behind the back burner. Part of it (other than working on other things not all of which are Mario related) is I want to release it but I am kinda daunted myself about playing thru it just to make sure it's fit, especially Labyrinth of Agony. I guess making levels that hard seems like a double edged sword.

Yes.

It was pointed out that the player can use the left and right buttons to walk while on slopes (I tried just to be sure, and he can), which I don't want so I will have to put this on hold unless a fix can be found, and if not, I don't have much hope for this.

Not glad to hear this! I strongly hope you can find a fix. In the worst case player simply has to determine not to press left and right arrows...

I don't know if blocks like these exist, but what about blocks that disable walking when touched? I dunno how these would work and if there won't be any problems, I'm not very experienced about ASM.

How does the gimmick work? Is this a patch or are these special blocks that disable walking?
What if you disable use of the D-pad altogether?

I don't wanna do that cuz I still need to press down to slide, and IDK how to do that.

It's a hex edit. I'm not sure if I remember which offsets but I think it might have been the ones about changing walking acceleration.

There's a way to disable only left and right buttons from D-Pad. Check this piece of code:

Code
LDA #$03
TRB $15
TRB $16

You can use this with UberASM at the proper hijack and... voilà. Mario won't walk, and he still can duck/jump/look up/etc.

Anyways, interesting gimmick. I wonder how many ideas will come from it.

Dream team (feed them, please):

^Well cool.

But I can't seem to find the ROM itself anymore so I might have to redo from scratch. I didn't really get very far so not a huge loss. But I might hold off until I feel like letting people test Luigi's Challenge.

So I decided to restart the ROM and do away with slopes (unless I feel like learning to use that UberASM code and/or someone can help with it). If not, I can probably find workarounds. Nevermind, think I got it now, but we'll see.

Lofty Lifts. It will still use the reset patch and probably infinite lives as well.

Disco Inferno. Might make this segment a little harder, and IDK if that message is even needed.

In its current iteration I feel like Kaizo: Light would be more fitting difficulty, so if a mod could move this thread to the Kaizo forum, that would be fine.
