Just the first few screens of the first level I made for... about a year actually. :D

Regarding the title: The very simple concept of the level is that it´ll start in cave-section, go on as a simple grassland (and maybe a forest in between), then turn into the sky-level you see here and then back to the ground again... Not really creative, but I´m already glad that I found some of my motivation back. ;)

While I am usually okay with the "dirt decor", I can't help but think you used it a bit too much towards the end of the screenshot. The blue foreground palette is also a bit odd; since this part of the level takes place in the sky, I'd suggest using a much lighter palette. Looking good so far, otherwise.
Whoa, that purple is really eye searing. Go with a lighter purple. It looks like you are trying to go an evening scene so maybe make the colors look gradient
but that is up to you
. Experiment with the pallet a bit to see what other colors can suit nicely for the ground and grass, everything looks really bright and saturated. As for the course, I can see where you are trying to do, shooting mario out and landing on the other side of the screen. I got to agree with Sayuri, everything does look pushed to one side. Your idea is really interesting so I want to see more of it soon :)

As far as the level design itself goes, I REALLY LOVE IT. I love wide-open with lots of room to explore.

I also like the pallet you are going for, but some people might think its too extreme. You might want to make the colors just a little less vibrant.

Bonus points for blue grass. Can't wait to see how it turns out.

Oh, it is so on.
The palette needs work. The blue and purple really doesn't mix with how you have it. The clouds look a bit odd as well. Try to go for more of a natural formation if you get what I'm saying.

The level design is okay. Nothing spectacular, but it gets the job done. I feel that the 1-UP at the bottom may be a bit too obvious. I would say use an invisible 1-UP block instead (provided you have enough room to get the thing). It also looks like you have Mario landing on that little platform with the 1-UP, to about the middle portion of the screen. If you want that 1-UP there, make the player work for it.

@Lotica: What do you mean those clouds don't look natural? I've seen shapes like that plenty of times when I go outside.

Anyways, this certainly looks interesting; it makes me think of floating islands.

Yeah, but you tend to look at them from below, while Mario backgrounds are generally viewed from the side, which makes these clouds really not look all that great.

Your layout has been removed.
I liked the idea of clouds in the level,
but I kind of weird to have a life right
in the beginning of the level, but
beyond that, is pretty cool that level,
good luck! (:

I think you got that mixed up. Some clouds--particularly of the cumulus variety, tend to form in towering shapes/stacks rather than spread out into flat masses. So there is definitely nothing wrong with them.
