So I'm a big fan of video game music, and I was wondering what your guys' favourite soundtracks are.

A couple of mine are;

Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie
Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
Luigi's Mansion
Super Mario 64
Super Mario Sunshine
Super Mario World

(I really like Nintendo, in case you hadn't noticed...)

I find that newer games don't really have good soundtracks. They mainly focus on creating an atmosphere within the game, as opposed to a memorable melody, which really is a shame. Although in some games I guess it's fitting.

Yeah, newer games typically have some pretty weak soundtracks. I guess we just don't have the quality composers working for video game companies as much anymore.

Not saying that making video games look absolutely gorgeous shouldn't be a priority, I just agree that they should really have good soundtracks as one as well.
Man, I don't remember the last time I spoke to you. Been a while.

Well Koji Kondo is still at Nintendo, so that's something.

Video games are remembered for their music and sometimes their storylines. I never remember a game because it had good graphics.

Edit: And Brawl had a very nice soundtrack.

Here are a couple games I recall of whose soundtracks I like the most:

Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest
Super Mario World
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
Top Gear (damn, the one I find more special is the third track)
Earthbound
Mega Man (can't remember which of the series...)
Sonic the Hedgehog (SNES)
Aero the Acro-Bat 1

Yeah, I prefer the older soundtracks because they look more appealing. I'm not into the newer games so I can't talk much about them.

Man we have pretty different taste in game soundtracks. I don't really care about a memorable melody because IMO those are hooky at first but then get really grating. Mario soundtracks just aren't really my thing, lately I've found I usually get sick of them before the end of the game. I think sound is a lot more important. Some of my favourite game soundtracks:
Earthbound (especially the more ambient/experimental tracks)
OFF
Max Payne 3
Silent Hill 2
Quake (the first one specifically, not the rest of the series. Dat Trent Reznor soundtrack.)
Hotline Miami (it's just licensed tracks but they're really well chosen)
Pretty much the whole Metroid series
Anything by Osamu Sato (most notably Eastern Mind and LSD)

Less atmospheric stuff I still dig:
Jet Set Radio (and JSRF)
Lords Of Thunder
Shin Megami Tensei (most of the series)
Streets of Rage Series (especially 3 but the first two are also great)
Rez
Madworld (it's corny as fuck but it's great)

Some that stand out:

-Xenoblade Chronicles
-Donkey Kong Country series (specifically 2 and Tropical Freeze)
-Persona 3/4/Q/really anything by Shoji Meguro
-9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors (might not be the best for listening to outside of the game, but damn they work well for their respective atmospheres)
-Etrian Odyssey IV
-Super Castlevania IV
-Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
-Chrono Trigger
-Yoshi's Island
-Aquaria

It's so hard to pick a singular favorite at this point, but here's a fairly well-rounded list.
-Super Paper Mario
-Super Mario Galaxy/2
-Yoshi's Island
-The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
-uhhh..... pretty much any other zelda game

I can't really think of a SPECIFIC favourite, sorry. These are just the ones I really like.
Resident Evil Series
Mario Kart series
Mega Man X2 for wii
yoshi island
gears of war
I'm really bad at making decisions, so have a nice long list of everything I can think of at the moment in no order whatsoever.

There are definitely more, but I'm too tired to think any more at this point and I really don't feel like expanding the list.

-Wayforward's Mighty series, Shantae series, Shovel Knight and other virt stuff

-Journey to Silius, Mr. Gimmick, Blaster Master and other NES SunSoft stuff
