Netflix developing a live-action series based on "The Legend of Zelda"

Quote
“The Legend of Zelda,” one of the most popular videogame series of all time, is in the works as a television show at Netflix.

The video streaming service is in the early stages of developing a live action series based on “Zelda,” about an ordinary boy named Link who must rescue a princess named Zelda and save a fantasy world called Hyrule, said a person familiar with the matter. As it seeks writers to work on the show, Netflix is describing it as “Game of Thrones” for a family audience, this person said.

The “Zelda” games have traditionally included swords and sorcery, like “Game of Thrones” or “Lord of the Rings,” but typically with a more light-hearted, kid-friendly tone.

Netflix is said to be working closely with Nintendo, the Japanese game developer that has made about 20 “The Legend of Zelda” games since the original, which was released in the U.S. in 1987.

Nintendo is very protective of its intellectual property and has allowed few adaptations over the years. An animated “Legend of Zelda” series ran for just one season in 1989. A 1993 movie based on Nintendo’s “Super Mario Bros.” was an infamous bomb.

As it is still seeking a writer to work on the series, Netflix has a long road to travel before a “Legend of Zelda” series actually becomes a reality. It’s also possible that Netflix or Nintendo will kill the project before it gets off the ground.

A Netflix spokeswoman declined to comment. A Nintendo spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Well, this certainly was unexpected. Definitely interested to see how this ends up.
It will probably end up being an infamous source of YTP material just like other video game -> movie/cartoon/tv/whatever adaptions.

I dunno if they execute it well it could be good... the plot of Zelda is a hell of a lot simpler than game of thrones though so they're definitely going to need to add a lot of stuff in order for it to really work as a tv show. It'll basically have to not stick that closely to the games... the dungeons especially wouldn't exactly translate well to tv.

My layout has removed you.
I'm basically picturing the 1989 series in live action format. Too bad I'm one of the few without a Netflix account. Also what was wrong with the SMB 1993 movie? I thought that was decent.
Aside from a cult following the Super Mario Bros. movie is generally disliked, and Bob Hoskins said it was the worst movie he ever worked on. I haven't seen the full movie in a while but from the footage I've seen recently and from what I remember I could only enjoy it as a "so bad it's good" movie.
Even as a kid I could tell how shittily made it was, but I had a blast with all those very very weird interpretations of certain stuff (such as "mushroom kingdom" just being a huge city literally covered in gross fungi or Mario's high jump being because of those weird boots).
It's an alright movie, maybe less so if you don't actually like Mario.

Super Mario Bros. is absolutely a bad movie (although it still can be enjoyable.) Interestingly, I rented it from a video store about 11 or 12 years ago after seeing an ad on the back of an Archie comic book that was published around the same time.

Iwata just confirmed this was a hoax. So yeah, probably not gonna happen.

“As of now, I have nothing new to share with you in regard to the use of our IPs for any TV shows or films, but I can at least confirm that the article in question is not based on correct information,” said Iwata.
This doesn't directly declare that it is a hoax, just that

is not true. It is entirely possible that there is something in the works he wants under wraps and thus has nothing to share, but it's 100% not going to match what this guy he's refuting is saying. It's just as likely that there is nothing being made - he didn't specify.

However, judging from the declining of either party to comment in the OP, there is no reliable information to be found supporting the idea a series is in the works.

Just look above you...
If it's something that can be stopped, then just try to stop it!
Hey, I liked the Zelda cartoon. Sure, it had very little to actually do with the games other than a few surface things like names and sound effects, but it was fun and witty. Ganon was hilarious.
I rather doubt they'd make a series about the Legend of Zelda unless it is about the entire series, like from Zelda splitting the Triforce to training with Shade, the Hero of Time.
There is no knowledge that is not power.
