Ham Sandwich (Looking for playtester(s))

Standard

This... Isn't exactly what I was expecting to design for my second SMW hack. This is an affectionate parody of SMW hacks that happens to be a SMW hack itself. The gameplay design is meant to be faithful to the original Mario World, and as such, this is a vanilla hack. There is also absolutely no effort put into the story.

"Bowser has captured 7 Yoshi eggs, so he put them in fortresses to wait for Mario to get them back."

As for screenshots, there isn't much to show you. All I have is the W1 map (Which I'm calling Yoshi's Bay for now) paths completed. When I have the map design finished and it becomes actual graphics instead of a bunch of 8x8 tiles floating in an off-color sea, maybe I'll post an IPS and several screenshots.

I've decided to finish the map of an area before I design any levels for that area. As such, expect me to get started on level 1 next week, as I suck at designing OW graphics.

If you really want to see a screenshot, I can show you.

A very early alpha indeed.

I may post a bit longer discussion when I have more of this hack completed.

I'm also using an awkward version numbering system. For those who are curious, that screenshot was of version 0.1.1.2. I'll submit a demo for moderation when I have all of W1 completed.

Until then, see ya.

That submap seems nice so far. I've never seen one built in such a method seen here before.
After 3 power outages within 24 hours of each other, I thought that it would be a good time to work on the OW. I'm pretty satisfied with what I've done. Here's 2 screenshots with all the events activated.

I had to take advantage of Lunar Magic's ability to create custom Layer 2 event tiles for some of the paths. You earn an imaginary cookie if you can spot where I made my custom event tiles. (Hint: There are 3 spots where I did.)

The OW looks MUCH prettier than when we last saw it. I'll probably start work on 1-1 over the school week, as I have much time off.

As a little bonus, both of the messages for Yoshi's House work perfectly fine unmodified. Saves me the work of having to come up with new ones.

So I actually worked on this thing.

Version 562

Version 577
Version 577 has some minor improvements to Yoshi's Bay Extra's level design.

It's a work in progress, but there's a patch if anyone wants to playtest. The castle is unedited and the path beyond it leads to... well I don't know where. But I'm satisfied with how everything before it turned out.

Also sorry for the almost 4-month bump. Version 562 refers to how many times I clicked the save icon in Lunar Magic, if anyone's curious.

Hey so it's been a few days now, so I'm not sure how much you'd still care for some feedback... But I just happened to stumble upon this thread and I gave this recent version a try without looking at the dates, whoops.

I think the design is a lot on the simplistic side, but that's excusable since it's still the first world. The first two levels are a good example of that since they're very linear. The second one in specific ressembles me a lot of YI2; you could at least give it a palette or background change, so it doesn't look like a blatant edit at first glance. The other two levels are fairly more interesting however, so that's a great thing.

Speaking of palettes, I like the background colors you created, especially the pink-ish mountains in the extra level. I'm not digging the foreground of the first level that much though; I don't know exactly why, but the grass is a tad too dark for my tastes. If you want a tip, you could try changing it from the original color in hue instead of luminosity (which means moving it to the right/left in the color picker - I personally like green that's a bit towards yellow for grass, but that's your choice!)

Guess that's it for now - good luck!
Yay, 2 more levels done!

Click me!

Demo 1035 adds 2 new levels (3 exits), a map for W2, some new palettes, a difficulty spike, and has some more decorations in the W1 submap.

Hello everyone! I've had a recent burst of inspiration for this project, and another 2 levels have been completed. This is probably gonna be the last demo before C3, for both technical reasons (no way can I finish the rest of world 2 in under a week) and the fact that I'll be on the move a lot during the weekend.

Version 1269 is right here.
Please report all feedback, positive or negative!

Stuff to do before C3:
Name World 2 (Done)
Give 2-A and sublevel D8 a new palette (Done)
Make 2-Ghost (Done)
Relocate -End of Demo- (Done)
Relocate a Star Road (Done)

Short unannounced progress report before C3!

Some very minor changes have been added to the hack. They are:

- No More Sprite Tile Limits added, after more thorough playtesting revealed the presence of invisible sprites in some levels. The sprite density in #1 Iggy's Castle has been increased to compensate for the lack of limits.
- Iggy has been made a lot harder with the help of several hex edits. These changes also apply to Larry, who isn't in the hack yet.
- Yoshi Bay 2 and Plains Secret 1 have had their palettes slightly changed at Gamma V's suggestion.
- All -End of Demo- levels that are accessed through secret exits (or alternate paths from secret exits) now display a different first message, to notify the player that they have accessed a different ending.

The original C3 demo has been deleted, as it is now obsolete. The new demo is available to select people(mostly testers).
