If Lui is making a map like this, I've lost... Remind me not to try and enter one of these things if you, Jimmy, or Lui are participating #w{xD}.

Same here. I'm probably screwed.

Holy shit Ladida. You're an overworld (as well as graphics, as well as ASM) god.
I assume that we all receive badges simply for participation?

Not even second and third got badges last year, if I'm not mistaken. Maybe that'll change this year, but I doubt everyone who participated will get something. Else I wouldn't see people putting as much effort in their entries for the next contests...
Yeah, then people like KDeee who put literally no effort into their levels would be getting prizes. >_>

Worst of all, we'd have a risk of having more KDeee's in later contests, and I'm pretty sure I speak for most when I say that we really don't want to see more of THOSE.

Koopster's talking about the overworld contest, not the levels.

Though, I do think the chance to have your overworld featured in hack like this is enough to stimulate motivation. Handing out badges for participation would still be good compensation for not winning, however, because, you know, overworlds take much more effort to design compared to levels.
I'll see what I can do about a participation badge.

I should have something witty to put here (even if it's just to update dated info), shouldn't I?

You underestimate how some people will put literally no effort into something if they know they'll get a participation badge.

I don't see much problem in handing out badges because if someone tries to cheat the contest in order to obtain a participation badge, their intentions would be glaringly obvious. The last YI VLDC managed to go without a joke entry, I'm sure this could too.

e: There were also 24hr contests in the past that required very little effort to place in the top 3.

Because that's exactly what we need to do, promote an everybody wins mentality in a competition.

That's pretty subjective in my opinion. While this may be the case for most, OW's may be much easier to create for others.

Except you may have the case of people like Proto Man or paran01abug97 who legitimately put in the effort but the end result didn't necessarily speak as such if the Results debacle is to be believed. If you're going to hand out participation badges, you've got to give them to everyone who participates whether you believe their entry is a blatant joke or not. And as such, yes people are going to take advantage of it.

That's kind of comparing apples to oranges because SMW hacking is so easily accessible and far more popular compared to YI hacking. The likelihood of a surge of joke levels in a YI contest is roughly nil to none as a result.

While some people may prefer designing overworlds to levels, it's hard to say that the the planning and execution of an overworld would take less time and effort compared to a level, unless said level is a marathon (which in that case the motives of the level maker are questionable).

SNN can use his judgement to determine whether or not a contestant is potentially trolling the contest or if they just lack skill to produce a quality overworld. It's best we assume good faith on poor quality submissions like with every other contest. If we didn't, those two wouldn't have even had their levels featured in the compilation.

Yes, there are differences between the two, but that doesn't stop anyone from downloading Golden Egg, spend 5 minutes in the editor, and submitting whatever they have to the contest. The accessibility difference doesn't amount to much since anyone can rush a YI level with the same amount of effort as you could with a SMW overworld.

That usually requires more effort than it's worth for all of the trouble.

Average overall quality with those contests (rules, entrants, etc.) is also much lower.

Considering the sheer amount of the entries this year, and the fact that the two overworlds leading the contest (hell, third place is behind by about 45 votes as of this post) are both chocolate overworlds, it might be worth splitting next year's contest into chocolate and vanilla contests.

While, yes, this is a contest to be the overworld for the VLDC collab, there are quite a few good overworlds that simply aren't being considered to the same degree. It wasn't an issue with the last collab (7 compared to 17, and iirc there wasn't any real chocolate overworlds, at least not compared to this one), but something's gotta change, especially if the next OW contest garners more attention. And judging both chocolate and vanilla on the same merits doesn't quite sit right, considering we've had both specific vanilla and chocolate LDC's. Even if we don't split them chocolate/vanilla, we should at least have a split (A-side/B-side?), considering the sheer amount of overworlds to choose from is straining. We've already seen people just going with the flow and voting for the one people seem to like the most.

Also the idea of judging the overworld/submaps independantly is excellent and that should have been considered from the start, let's be honest.
