How do you guys feel about Creepy Pastas?

Hello fellow Super Mario World hackers! How do you guys feel about Creepy Pastas in Mario hacks? By my opinion, they present no challenge, which is bad, but if done right, it can create a creepy atmosphere. I'm mixed on it. #smw{:peace:}
Wakana's HLDC entry is basically the only time I've seen a really creepy and disturbing hack done right.

I've thought of making a multi-level hack that starts out innocent and slowly goes into pure depraved horror, but I've never bothered starting it. It's probably best if I don't start it.
I quite like them, especially when they have new ideas that could make for good SMW levels or custom sprites or what not.

Indeed, I'm actually making one of the secret levels in Mario's Nightmare Quest a mashup of creepypasta stories and levels from fake rumours about finished versions of Brutal Mario.

I just prefer the stories to be as non supernatural as possible, cause disturbing in game content interests me more than ghost stories.
For gaming news and Wario discussions, check out Gaming Reinvented and Wario Forums respectively.

As for Mario's Nightmare Quest? Well, it's currently on Fusion Gameworks, ROM Hacking.net or the GCN at the moment.
Speaking of which, I found another person claiming to be a tester of Carol, but god knows if this is finally someone who speaks the truth, or not.

I personally like creepypasta hacks and think it's a shame that the guy who made MARIO got banned; actually liked it.
While being admittedly bland most of the time, creepypasta hacks CAN be well-executed.
All they have to do is make you feel uneasy.
To most people who grew up with SMW, MARIO was probably a bit unsettling once people heard of it, similar to ''Abandon Lonliness'', you know, that infamous Pokemon Firered/Leafgreen creepypasta romhack.

To me, something just has to be that - creepy.
How it's done doesn't matter much to me. I'd prefer it vanilla though, because it gives the illusion of ''something being wrong with SMW''.
Then again, I don't particularly care either way about creepypasta hacks, because most of them are unfortunately really bad.

By the way, why aren't there these contests again?
You know, christmas hack contest, halloween contest... maybe we will see something neat this years' halloween? #tb{:D}
Based on the various Creepypasta SMW ROM hacks I have either played or watched playthroughs of, my thoughts are that they are largely the same, with poor or unedited levels, cryptic messages, an overworld recycled from the original SMW, and probably some other stuff I did not think of when writing this reply other various resemblances to the original, famous creepypasta hack MARIO, which basically started it all in the first place. On a slightly different note, one thing that bothers me personally about most creepypasta hacks is a lack of attention to atmosphere. Basically, I think they are almost all the same.

Also, I am curious, what is Carol? Is it some unreleased Creepypasta hack?

I think he's talking about the author of Brutal Mario, but given how irrelevant that is to the current discussion I doubt it.
I'm rather neutral about them. I don't really settle on reading them everywhere I go, but if they're done right, then they can be enjoyable to stand for.
Windowless ride, feeling alive
Are you alive or just breathing?
how do i make a halloween pasta guyz, mine is just regular pasta from the store nearby

Although I like the concept and I feel like good creepypasta can be made, I can't say I'll enjoy playing one of those games/hacks. I'm not really a fan of horror games. In the end, all it does is give me a headache and a crazy dream, then it is all back to normal. #ab{:S}
I've seen numerous attempts at SMW hack creepypastas and none of them were scary. At all. Most of them were just MARIO clones, too.
MP already mentioned Wakana's Nightmare House, which is really well made, but it's not so much a creepypasta as it is just a level with a lot of gorn and jumpscares. And it also has some gameplay mixed in, unlike these other hacks.

I don't.

MARIO had it's charm, but I find it to be the only "creepypasta" that has any place in the SMW-Hacking realm. As Lazy said, most of them seem to just be trying to recreate MARIO. Why follow in the footsteps of something that's already made a ripple in the community, since it's not going to come even close to making that same ripple (again)?

Of course, if someone can direct me to a well made and original creepypasta hack, I'd love to give it a chance.

EDIT: I do enjoy just horror-themed hacks though; such as those submitted during the Halloween contests.
My layout has removed you.

Likely to try and be the next creepypasta celebrity. I've already poked fun at these people for doing so.

Aside from the original MARIO, there are few other legitimately scary moments in romhacks.
Honestly, I feel like the only thing that made M A R I O creepy was the picture. #fim{D:}
I never found any SMW creepypastas to create good atmosphere at all, and most of them, again, simply try to re-create M A R I O. I'd really like to see one that truly pulls it off though.

I was indeed referring to Carol, the author of Brutal Mario.
Just brought it up because cheatmaster was talking about Brutal Mario, it was just a side note unrelated to the actual topic.

Feel free to check my file.bin, I saved one of those terribly bad ones there before it got removed for good. #tb{^V^}
I believe it was called ''DARKNESS.ips'', or something.

But honestly, I think creepypastas CAN be good, if well-executed.
I just wished the halloween contest would get a revival, I always enjoyed the entries, when I was fresh in regards to romhacks and heard about SMW Central for the first time.
I have found M A R I O rather interesting but not creepy (the picture is "yuck!" though). However, the imitators have completely ruined it. We definitely need something fresh but I haven't seen any creative creepypasta for ages.
I kind of have mixed feelings on creepypastas. I haven't really played any good creepypastas but I remember playing M A R I O which wasn't really much of a creepypasta except for that really scary picture in it.

*sigh*

This again? -_- (me of all people annoyed by this???)

Anyway, I really don't see this being a good thing. If it's a "creepypasta" hack, it's unlikely to be fun and realistic at the same time. Like seriously, what kind of ghost who haunts a game and tortues its players (which is already strange enough) decides to make it fun as well #ab{>_>} The examples mentioned here (Wakana's HLDC entry and such) are more of "creepy" levels than "creepypasta" levels, as hard as it is to admit it.

I don't really get why this idea gets brought up so much. I mean, what is so great about a "creepy" atmosphere in an SMW hack? If you want to be creeped out so badly go here. If you want to be creeped out in an SMW hack so badly go re-play MARIO or some of that guy's other creepypasta hacks (which are, for the record, done far better than any of its imitators).

(and by the way, since this has been mentioned so many times: sorry to burst your bubble, but the creator of that hack had nothing to do with that image. He stole it off of some other creepypasta and threw it in there for who knows why)

Perhaps you are right in that we should just try and let this "Creepypasta SMW Hacks" fascination go and move on to other, more promising endeavors. As stated by several replies to this topic, "Creepypasta" hacks are pretty much always quite disappointing.

As for why M A R I O might have included that "scary" image with the download for his hack, I am willing to hazard a guess as to why; to tie up the the cryptic story of the hack/creepypasta, and perhaps even to make it more memorable, if through nothing more than the fright value of the image.

I don't like creepy pastas or horror games. The most I can handle of horror are zombies from Red Dead Redemption. (Which they do look a little scary.)
I actually don't mind them.
..as long as they're not cliché, actually try to scare and do scare.
