Three: That's The title!

Oh hey. So like I make these things called Super Mario World Rom Hacks and stuff. Today I'll share like my newest hack because I can....LOGIC. Anyways, this is a semi-vanilla hack with some custom things sprinkled in. The other gimmick is that there are only three HUGE levels that take up everything. So umm....that's about it.

Screens:

It's the gameplot....kinda...? Who cares what Mario has to do anyways.

It's the map! Even though it's water based, the game is mostly sky themed. Oh and I messed up Mario's hat pallet.

A new direction of carrot platforms.

And that's it! Feedback would be nice.

...

In all seriousness, that OW isn't great. I doesn't really achieve it's goal of being watery. It comes across as a REALLY REALLY BAD palette change. Why not try actual water. Maybe something like what they did in the 8th VDLC? Like this.

Secondly, how does Mario walk on water?

Thirdly, if the world is mainly sky based, why is the OW watery?

Fourth, the whole map is illogical! How does the water stay on the island without falling off? If there were lakes on the island (or the island was one big lake) then I guess it would make more sense.

There's no perspective errors (that I can see), but the execution is sub-par at best.

Talking about the third screenshot, it's quite empty. There's no coins, or anything like that (enemies, etc.). I mean, what you've done with the line guides look nice, but still. If the level is still in progress, then, I guess I see why it's empty.

I guess this an sub-par start. The level looks okay, but the OW really doesn't. Try and redesign the OW, that's all I can say.

I might second everything AlwaysANoob said, but I'm curious why you don't just use the No Overworld patch if your hack has only three levels? There doesn't appear to be any secret exits or backtracking required (at least according to the screenshots).

Ok, so I made a new overworld:

I also updated the first level section:
This looks A LOT better.

Even though the new OW is quite uninspired, it's better. The only thing I don't get is the entire bridge part at the top. How is it being suspended like that? I spotted one thing, and I circled it in the image linked.

Image.

Also, the hat palette is still messed up. I would probably recommend asking for how to fix that, as it doesn't look great.

Still, it comes across as quite dreamy, which I suppose fits the theme of your levels. I would recommend removing the bridge part and replacing it with floating islands. They might do the same thing and look even better. Again, this is just my opinion- you can keep it the same if you like.

Speaking of that level, it's looking also quite nice. Only comment- the three turn blocks are quite high up. I can see you can still reach them, but I would recommend lowering them slightly.

You've made some significant good changes that have greatly increased the quality of your hack. Keep working, and I look forward to more updates.

OK GUYS HERE AN UPDATE IF ANYONE CARES:

Here's the title screen. Mario's in that box and will probably never escape.

Here's a level progress update. It showcases a few new features (if you can find them)

I updated and fixed the pallet on this map. I like it and think I might stick with it...

I like the stuff you did with the text. I feel like the idea of Mario being stuck in a box is a little random, but it's not a bad idea.

I'm liking those fences. They blend in and add some extra paths for those who want a challenge. I'm also glad you didn't overuse them. The enemy placement is good, but easy. I can only assume this isn't going to be a hard hack. This may just be me, but the white used in that screenshot is quite bright. Still, it doesn't look bad. Nice work, I suppose!

While I can say the palettes look a lot better (and you fixed the hat palette - kudos!), what I said before still rings true. How does the water stay on the island? How does it not fall off? It's certain not bad now, but I think it's quite illogical. Shouldn't Mario be swimming on the island? You need to change the level tile to be a BLUE one and the paths to be BLUE in order to make it look fitting. Also, instead of using paths, why not use those dots that they use to show paths in water? If you do those things, it'll turn into an okay OW.

You've made some good progress. The OW is starting to improve, and I'm glad to see you're getting better at making this hack.
Good luck!

Wow, thanks so much! Oddly enough, I was inspired to make this hack when I saw Dr. Tapeworm's Overworlds. Then I thought, "Hey, let's make a hack!" or something. I might revisit the special world levels to see how they handled level design as the hacks goal is to make a 2003 hack with a modern twist.
