What are some good free game makers?

What are some good platform game makers that are free?

I want to make a platform game so yeah...
You could experiment with game maker, stencyl, or unity starting out. I know there are more but I can't think of any right now.
Are any of those free to download?
All three of those are free to download. There are PRO versions that offer more features, but, a LITE version is available.

I would recommend Unity because it has a great physics engine and a really big user base. If you have a problem, you'll most likely find an answer. Of course, I recommend you start out with smaller projects/tutorials before starting a proper game.

If you do decide to use Unity, download it here:
This goes to the free Personal edition.
Be sure to follow lots of basic tutorials before you start making a proper game! Ask us here at the forums if you need any help - we'll be happy to help!

Good luck for the future!

Can I make a 2D game out of it?
If you're asking "can Unity make 2D games" then, yes, it can. It's much harder to make 2D than 3D, so, if you want to make a 2D platformer, Stencyl instead might be the way to go. I assumed you meant 3D. Of course, you could make it 3D and have the camera facing in such a way it appears to be 2D, but still. Your choice.

There is RPG Maker VX Lite. It is essentially a watered-down version of the full program, and as it is free, it obviously comes with some limitations designed to make you want the full package (one restriction is that you can have no more than 10 events on a single map.)

You can also try the full version of RPG Maker for 30 days, which I am currently doing.

it might not fit here, but if you really want to do you things your own way, I suggest you use c# with openTK or c++ with openGL.

You are able to make any kind of game with that, 2d and 3d, however you have to learn the languages. This is not really hard and its worth the time to learn it because you can do more with your own engine then with any other engine/game maker you will ever find. plus some experience.

ok...

Anyway, my suggestion would be GameMaker: Studio. It's pretty easy to pick up for a beginner and there are plenty of tutorials and such out there.
Should I use Stencyl?
If you want to be able to build something right away without needing to know real coding and a fairly easy learning curve go with Game Maker: Studio or Stencyl. If you want something that can be a little more robust but has a slightly harder learning curve go with Multimedia fusion.

Which one is better? (only the free versions)
Stencyl is probably a little easier to learn but Game Maker has more options.

Really it just comes down to what you prefer, try a few of them and figure out what you like about them. They all have free versions so no worries there.
Stencyl has all features and is free but gamemaker requires to pay to get everything, So I chose Stenycl

Any tutorials on Stencyl?
