Figured Out How to Insert a Photograph Into SMAS Game-select Screen

This is my first post; I'm new here...

I figured out how to insert a photo into the game-select screen of Super Mario All-stars. It's a fairly complicated process but once you get the hang of it, it is relatively easy.

The following is a link to an instructional video. Spoiler/rabid-fan alert! Yes, this is a My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic hack of the game. Just ignore those bits of the video if that show or its fan-base offends you.

Anyway. I hope one of you can use this information to make this process easier.

Thanks.

That's cool.

I haven't seen the video but does the image have to be a certain aspect ratio/pixel count?
From the video it looks like it needs to be a specific aspect ratio at least to match the aspect ratio of the image you're going to overwrite.
This looks cool and all, but why isn't this in the SMAS Hacking subforum?

(Also, I don't think you would need to change the picture until you change the levels in that game... Yeah.)

Luigi_Fan is right this should be in the SMAS subforums so moved.
Now I need to figure out how to alter the in-game text. Does anyone know how to do that?

You could probably use a hex editor, but otherwise, there is no easy way to edit the text in SMAS.

End of this message.

What do you mean by that, have you tried yy-chr and press + and - 10 or 20 times ?
Some of it you can edit it I did so a long time ago.
The only problem is you got to know which hex address your toying with and to what game it'll effect.

Smb1 and some of smb3 you can edit the text make sure its lined up in alphebetical order and test the rom.
That way you'll know where it leads to.

Depends on what text you want to edit. Do you want to edit all the text of all games? Try doing ctrl+f "text" here. It has documented all known ROM addresses of the SMAS ROM so far.

My blog. I could post stuff now and then
Any decent .tbl files with the correct HEX values for the alphabet? Is the text in SMAS compressed?

I checked the ROM addresses. Any advice on figuring out which HEX values equal which letters? If I can figure it out, it should be relatively simple to edit the text so long as the new text takes up the same space as the old text.

Honestly it looks like the text for all 4 of the games are compressed. "which is a bitch"
You could open up yy-chr and look through it.
Any garbage that may resemble some or alot of graphics.
Look below it and hit the + button 10-20 times.
It can be a daunting task looking through it.
The only way it could be uncompressed abit more if the programmer for yy-chr would look into it and update his program.

If you go to this address 23d9ff this where the smb3 title screen letter resides at.
Also most of the graphics appear for it.
If you have a good hand at gfx replacement you could really do something to it.
Keep in mind the color of the graphics while replacing.

If you go to this address 1c0200 that might be smb3 over world map letters.
Only way to find out is clip them out save it and test the rom.
I do have to say becarefull of what you remove and replace in the rom.
I believe the english version may have a checksum problems if it isn't saved correctly.
Thus we need a editor to save the changes to the rom so it won't crash upon loading up whatever you or we change.

If you would make a log from time to time and any memembers we could get enough info.
For someone build an editor of some sort, I asked fusoya a while back and he mentioned hes not interested. :/
