Is the site evolving?

Link Thread Closed
Seeing that, in recent years, the site has expanded from being focused almost solely on SMW to developing and hosting hacks of newer Mario games (notably YI, SM64, NSMB, and NSMBU), the obvious question (which has likely been asked before, though I'm unsure) is: Will SMW Central transition into a site dedicated to general Mario hacking rather than a site that is primarily devoted to SMW hacking? We already seem to be moving towards that reality, since hacking of new games is becoming easier and SMW's hacking potential is gradually being exhausted.

To my knowledge, one of Kieran's primary goals for the past few years has been to create some kind of successor to SMWC that does primarily focus a lot more on general ROM/Mario hacking rather than just SMW. There have been failed attempts he's made at that in the past, most notably Kuribo and Nightfall. I don't know if he's still interested in doing something like that though.

Anyway, although sections are being opened for a bunch of other games, the site's PRIMARY focus hasn't changed all that much at all, and I doubt it will anytime soon. I guess we're just trying to expand a bit and bring potentially more people to the scene. There's the Misc. ROM Hacking forum anyway, so why not open a few more forums for hacking of the more popular "miscellaneous" games rather than clutter them all in one place?

I vaguely recall reading about Nightfall. Wasn't SMW Central down for a time while they tried to force Nightfall or something like that?

Yeah. Everyone was banned and the forums were replaced with some image. However, apparently Kieran left the community at some point or.... Something, and Smallhacker was left in charge but decided to shut it down since it wasn't progressing well I guess.

(I found all this out from when I was looking through all the news posts for my timeline)

The site will (probably) continue to expand to cover hacking of other Mario games but will still be named "SMW Central".

Also, you're more likely to see, Big Foot, the Loch Ness monster and an alien together in a cafe before you see Kuribo finished.
It's still fine to be named as it is because people here only wanna comment on hack threads IF they're specifically SMW. If it's YI or anything else then getting feedback is harder than getting a ROM accepted into the hack database so there's almost no point in making threads of non-SMW hacks here. That mainly applies if you're known for making SMW hacks.

Super Mario World hacking is certainly still the central aspect of SMWC, but the above statement seems pretty silly. It's like saying "No one rarely ever comments on hack threads for anything non-SMW, so don't even bother making non-SMW hack threads." This kind of attitude is non-conducive to the site's development.

People who hack other games are getting an increasing market share here. I'm talking specifically about SM64 and NSMBW, but all other areas of hacking endorsed by SMWC are growing, and the site is also growing.

Take a look at the Tools section. Once upon a time, back when I first joined the staff team, it was all SMW tools (and like 500 SPC players) with no OS listing (except for the one or two Mac-compatible tools). Now, there are multiple supported platforms (Windows, OS X, Linux) and tools for a wide range of games.

So, to answer the original question, yes this site is evolving.

And when Mario Maker comes out, shit's going to get really interesting when thousands of new people search online for "custom Mario levels" and stumble upon SMWC.
Yes, the site is evolving. Hell, this could be about Legend of Zelda hacking too if you want.
There is no knowledge that is not power.
I know you love Zelda and all, and Imma let you finish, but do you need to bump two dead threads to namedrop it? D:

Just look above you...
If it's something that can be stopped, then just try to stop it!
