This is the last update of the year. In this update, I finished the world map, aside from some touches that might come in the next year.


The tiny house on the veeery left corner is Mario's Pad. Then from there it's Peaceful Path. Then, Peaceful Paradise. The rest I'll keep under the wraps.

At this point now, I believe I can build the story around this world map, then the content.

It's been a while sense any info has been shared. Is there any Update to give on the hack like maps of the areas or new enemies, things like that?

No, not much has been done since the new year. I'm still trying to work out some life stuff and I'm going to be honest, it's taking its time.

On the 1st of this year, I had planned to start up a collab-hack that some people could pitch in for, but that kind of fell through when I realized I myself am not really a leader at the moment. I've started school too, so dev time will be cut a little shorter until I get myself together.

I suppose I can give a little teaser as to what's to come...

Update: Toad's sprites are fully implemented. He's got a handful of weapons (about five) but only four are implemented (sprites, animation scripts). All spells are finished for him. Just gotta work on the two new party members...

Title Screen looks really good. The B in Plumbers is tilted a little too much. Also I think the Yellow Circle/Blob in the background needs to be removed as it feels really out of place.

Other then those 2 things the Title looks really well done. #tb{:)}

And a little extra: The ABXY graphics are updated. They look like panels flipping.

This is what it looks like opening up. If you press a button they'll "flip" to the other side, revealing the button's function.

Y - Mushroom
X - Star
B - Action button? I couldn't think of anything else for this.


The game development is going slow, but it's going somewhere at least. Over the past few days I've been thinking of characters and stuff for the story. So far, I've come up with traits for the main cast that I hope will make for a fun narrative. I've been trying to carefully write the characters in a way they'll make sense in battle. For example, the Toad we met at the beginning of SMRPG would run so fast he'd run into things without noticing where he was going, especially danger. In this game, he'll be the fastest character in the group. That's just one example!

The screens above are some of the things I've been making on the side. There is progress, but it's slow.

Minor update. I'm working on changing Toadstool's sprite. Introducing...




Yes! Here is the progress:








I kind of... left out Toadstool in terms of new spells, and I felt bad for Toadstool fans and Toadstool. I wanted to give her something new in battle, but what could it be?

Something bothered me for the longest time. Why couldn't Toadstool more prepared for fighting? She's a great fighter for someone in a dress, but why couldn't she change out of that dress? Something in her character? There's no reason she has to keep wearing the same attire, right? Why not switch it up a bit?



(And a little site notice, unbeknownst to me before I started spriting the new Toadstool, this means that all the party members that join Mario are new and have all new animations to go with them! Scary, and there is so much more work to be done.)

Loving everything I see so far.

The Map looks awesome. The Pipe design is sweet.
Toad sounds like a reason to learn speedrun strats.
Bomb Peach sounds like an Amazing Character.

Because it's Bomb Peach I would recommend to make all
of her specials Bomb-Based.

Like to replace her Heal-All
move, have her release Fireworks above everyone's heads
and when they explode, they release confetti that rains
down and heals everyone.

For a Special that makes all enemies have the Fear effect,
have her throw the Huge Bomb Boss, but when it explodes, it's
only smoke.

Great Job on this Hack so far. #ab{:D}
Ooooo, I like the idea of bomb Peach! Excellent ideas. My thoughts on Peach's specials are that I want to keep her as the primary healer and crowd controller of the group. However, if I were to add bombs to her arsenal, she would have to be more aggressive I'd say. If this were to be her forte I would definitely want to blow things up.

So let's go with it. I'll see if I can implement a smoke grenade using the Poison Gas animation, but that's for tomorrow. (I'm thinking of calling it Dust Raccoon. How's that sound?)
You can still have her as the Primary Healer and Crowd Controller, I just think that all her Special should be Bomb related. That why I think the Fireworks Idea would work.

Smoke Grenade sounds good, but I'm confused on the name Dust Raccoon. The Mario series does have Raccoons, but I don't see how Raccoons have anything to do with Bombs.
Hmm, I can see your point... The name "Dust Raccoon" came about after coming up with an alternative to "Dust Bunny", because I was trying to think of something that would generate smoke or fog. What it has to do with bombs I'm not sure! Haha.

The name "Smoke Grenade" is bad for two reasons: One, it's generic. Two, it doesn't fit the 12 character limit.

How about "Nightfall"? I was planning for it to be a final spell for one of the characters, however it's still up in the air, nothing is decided yet.

What are your thoughts/ideas?
I think in order to save your Idea of having Nightfall for a Final Special for a character, I think Overcast would be better for this case. Overcast is mostly known for Clouds and clouds of smoke sounds really good for this.

Thank you for your comment, I will try to do what I can to finish this and actually release it out into the world. I will never give up! I will never surrender!


EDIT: A side note, what should I call Therapy and Group Hug? I'm planning to replace Group Hug with the fireworks that rain over the party and heal them, and calling it one of three names:
- Group Shower
- Power Shower
- Star Shower

As for Therapy, the name and the effect stumped me, I'm not sure if I should change this or not, or how to change this if I do.
That Overcast Animation is Perfect. #tb{:D}

For the Fireworks, out of the 3 names Power Shower
sounds the best.

As for the Replacement of Therapy, this was a bit tricky
to think up of something. Maybe something like the Pop Rocks
Candy and call it Star Rocks. As for the animation for that,
3 Small Stars above the character break open to reveal 3 Super
Small Candies.

Group Hug will be called Power Shower.

As for Star Rocks/Therapy, I don't like the name too much. How about "Heal Star"? Literally I just came up when typing that last sentence. Toadstool could send a little star up, then the star jumps to the current target and showers them with healing magic?

In other news, I found out how to check/write to character's stat values. #tb{O_O} Now it's entirely possible to permanently alter stats in battle!

These values include:

Level
Current HP
Maximum HP
Current FP
Maximum FP
Speed
Attack
Defense
Magic Attack
Magic Defense
Current EXP
equipped weapon
equipped armor
equipped accessory
spell list
status ailment (if any)

Unfortunately I haven't located where damage values are stored, so nothing that increases attack or decreases damage by checking these. (For example, adding current HP to attack damage)
Still looking into how to alter enemy stats using this method. (I found how to alter specific monsters in formation, but nothing on the current target)

I made a post about it over on InsaneDifficulty, where darkkefka is making the SMRPG:Armageddon hack. If you guys want, you can come up with some ideas on how to use this. I came up with some ideas myself (before anyone says anything). I guess these are examples of what can be done:
- An equip that, when equipped, causes all healing spells for healer to heal themselves the same amount as the target.
(To do this, the game would check to see if the healer's Current HP < Max HP. If true, add player's Magic Attack + Absolute Value to Current HP. Then, if Current HP >= Max HP, set Current HP = Max HP)

- An equip that, when equipped, removes status on healer when target is healing another party member.
- An item that increases X stat of the target permanently
(For example, max HP or Speed)

- (My favorite) an item that causes the target to instantly learn a new spell (which permanently saves in the game memory, allowing use out of battle/in new battles)
