Definitely looking forward to this. I love the co-op idea and the goofy looking enemies.

You know, I find "Extra Mario World" to be kind of a generic name for such a unique hack.

It's funny you should mention that particular hack; Extra Mario Bros. is actually our hack's namesake. We've been talking about the name a bit and we do see the problem with a generic-sounding name. Back when I was doing this on my own it was less of a problem since it was in fact a pretty generic hack, but now it's not. Extra Mario World does embody the vision we have for it (SMW but bigger, advanceder, and cooler) but does not sound very interesting. You should think of the current title a place-holder as we are considering a name change, though that will require us actually coming up with a new title first.

New Player Character: Kadaal

No, we're not dead. This update is a pretty hefty one. As you guys know, this hack will have multiple (and completely different) playable characters. I quite recently finished the player character engine and have something pretty cool to show for it: a brand-new character, capable of playing alongside Mario! Note that this isn't a sprite, it's its own thing entirely. Anyways, the new character is Kadaal, the vengeful koopa! His home was destroyed during the Dark Lord's invasion of Dinosaur Land and he's pretty pissed. Here are some details regarding how he plays:
- Fast and powerful while on the ground.
- Mediocre control in midair (hard to land on enemies).
- Has hit points instead of Mario's powerup system.
- Quickly accelerates and can take out enemies with punches and kicks.
- Original character don't steal.

I haven't had a chance to record a gameplay video yet but I should have it up in a few days. We're gonna put up a demo so you guys can try him when we put up the video. In the meantime, have some screenshots!

That's one cool koopa. Really interesting to see different characters that can be used alongside Mario. Does this replace that other Koopa character you showed off before? :o

Thanks! Me and Eminus both put a lot of effort into him so that's nice to hear. And yes, this is the finished version of the same character. I suppose I should have made that more clear.

Excellent work so far man. THe new character is looking pretty awesome. I can't believe I don't recall seeing this thread until now o_O
Layout by LDA during C3.

Is that a punching animation? If so, you should probably make his fists bigger to make it really look like he's actually punching (and maybe make his pose have some more "strength" to it like making him lean forward etc.). His legs/feet also animate a bit weirdly.

Yup, it's the punching animation. Thanks for the advice, I might give it a try. I actually wasn't really satisfied with the legs either, but I thought I could leave them for now because nobody would notice them.

Temples, castles and fortress sometimes will have a boss.

No, it's not really planned for this level to feature a boss right now. What we're more sure about though is that there will be more than one boss per "world".
So we're back with another update!

The Koopa's graphics look rather out of place even though the animation is nice. Aside from that it's pretty impressive.

I saw how at the beginning Kadaal could jump on an enemy. I'm not sure if you have plans to change that, but my only suggestion would be have him not able to just hop on enemies.

That's something we considered but at the moment it just makes him too weak compared to Mario. It could change at some point but I wouldn't bet on it.

In perspective though, doesn't this just make him better than mario other than the fact he gets no powerups? If he can just do everything Mario does (with powerups being an exception)?

It might not be very clear from the video but he has a lot less control over his jumps in midair, making it really tough to actually land on the enemies. It's not quite Castlevania levels of stiffness but still a significant decrease from Mario's jumps. We are considering lowering his maximum health by one though.
