Bits and Pieces: The Making Of

Hack Video

It's been about a month since the revelation of Bits and Pieces, the request based romhack. I chose to do this and put Colossus in development hell as feedback was slowing down and building the last levels and bosses were increasingly draining.

Colossus is almost in a state where I can release a second pre-alpha (I'm still testing the last levels and managing the difficulty), but I did have other plans for this C3.

I changed course because it would be more of a challenge design-wise to make good levels from resources I haven't used nor decided for myself. A bunch of the custom blocks/sprites used up to this point were either requested by others or chosen at random, making for design choices I might not have ever tried otherwise.

On top of that, I've recorded the creation of some of the levels to showcase for C3, so you get to see some of the back end this time around.

One of my block requests was the Anti-Moon, which takes 3 lives away from the player. I put in an invisible block that sets your lives to 50 to start off with, and loaded the level with Anti-Moons to dodge on top of the ordinary enemies.

I used a few of the requested sprites to put this one together, and quickly decided on having it be Layer 2. Wait till you see the Thwinjis hopping about in this level.
This is actually pretty good I love the palette choice in the second video though I have to say I'm not a super big fan of the angry moons though they do remind me of the angry stars from super mario land.
Interesting concept. The angry moons are really cute and were never utilized the way you did before from my view, but be sure to not haphazardly spam the resources others have offered to implement in those levels and it will hopefully be good enough. The palette in the second video is one of the best I've ever appreciated.

Since this thread got some good vibes, I recorded the first area of the deadly Abandoned Mines. Te background is intended to be black unlike in the video, so working with this tileset quickly would be easier.

I got a request to use the Disappearing Boost Block right about when this whole project was started, so that explains the blue up arrows you'll see throughout the level. The first are is one of those fast-paced "think fast" segments.

Since then, I also adjusted layer priority on the tileset so it would be easier to see every enemy at all times.
