General Super Mario Maker Discussions

The NSMB series has so far not had any functional spinjumps, spins were just to extend normal jumps, activate switches/screws and pick stuff/people up.
So yeah, introduced in SMM. Couldn't even spin off of walls previously.

That level never used the glitch.

I feel like beating Expert is not worth it. Because i did it and took me over a half hour to beat, and everything was the same. Same music, same credits, and at the end you don't get anything special. Just a normal character you get in the other modes. (in which case i got Bowser) The princess congratulates you but thats all you get. Could they atleast do something better the next time? This really sucks.

Its not pointless, theres cap how many times you can beat easy and normal to unlock mystery mushrooms, so at some point you do have to beat expert to unlock last ones remaining.

You can still play easy/normal but you just dont unlock anything.

Speaking of that, I literally just hit the cap for Easy. I believe the cap for Medium is somewhere near 30 or 40.

So apparently data miners have found The Windows logo in the data files for Super Mario Maker, as well as the Angry Sun and other things.

...Seriously?

The Apple logo'd better be in there, too.... #tb{:DD}

Maybe it was placeholder or they used it for testing or something.

But I wonder what or will we get DLC, especially since sm4sh SMM DLC stage has slopes, placeable lava and other stuff that isnt in the game..
there was almost a muncher costume in mario maker. without a doubt this is worse than when silent hills was cancelled.

I have a question about SMM: Is it any better than other video game editors such as Lunar Magic? Should I get it if and when I get enough money?
Depends on how you define "better". If you mean the general usage, then yes, it's way better and way more intuitive. If you mean general capabilities that come directly with the editor itself, then it's probably still better thanks to the high number of combinations you can create. If you mean less limitations, then Lunar Magic (or rather "SMW Hacking") is most likely better, because while it has typical SNES limitations, at the end of the day you can still do more with it (changing graphics and musics, adding custom enemies etc.). Also Lunar Magic lets you create complete games, including overworlds, whereas Super Mario Maker only lets you create and upload singular levels. So which editor is better for you really depends on what you're looking for.
Feel free to visit my website/blog - it's updated rarely, but it looks pretty cool!
I agree there are positive and negative aspects to both. SMM is very accessible and intuitive. You don't have to deal with things like not being able to use certain types of enemies together, it's easier to avoid cutoff, etc. But it limits you in terms of things like custom graphics, palettes, music, and of course ASM.

As stated, Lunar Magic and SMW hacking let you create full games. You can generally do more, but it's potentially very difficult to do so. With enough time and effort, you can really do anything within the limits of the SNES, but of course you have to learn how to do so.

Not to blatantly self-promote, but I wrote up a little blog post the other day about SMM vs LM. Certainly doesn't cover everything, but it's the gist of my thoughts on the matter.

Comparing the two isn't a fair thing honestly. If you're looking for a fun toolbox to make some simple levels to challenge friends or just goof around, Super Mario Maker is your ticket. If you want to get serious about a full Mario World adventure with features that may not be in SMM, then Lunar Magic is for you.

Me personally, I've found myself to actually finish more levels in SMM than Lunar Magic. I think that comes down to the fact that I have little time to do anything anymore since I have to do an internship, a job, school, and focus on my life, and I can't bring full focus to a hack. With SMM, I can just fire it up and make something in my spare time that I could enjoy with no hassle.

Again, it's unfair to compare the two, but it's easy to see why people have opinions on which one is better. All that should matter is that if it interests you and you're having fun with what you're doing, just go for it. No one will judge you.

Well... they might, but you should ignore such people :P
Just before taking off to work today, I whipped up a new level in five minutes and loaded it up as some sort of experiment.

Basically, the title says it all. I tried to make the easiest level thinkable to find out if it's actually possible to achieve a 100% completion rate on a level in Super Mario Maker or if there are still people who skip the level or somehow actually fail in it. The only way to die in this level is by either waiting 500 seconds or maybe by getting crushed by a spring board, although I'm not sure if that even works. I have seen occasions in the game where I or someone else was crushed by the dumbest things, but usually, as far as I remember, it was by winged objects. Winged P-Switch, winged cement block etc. I don't think the non-winged versions can actually crush you.

Does the completion rate go down if the player happens to quit/skip the level? I don't know why people would do that in your level, but...
The completion rate is defined as "number of successful attempts" divided by "total number of attempts". So yeah, skipping or quitting the level would lower the completion rate. Right now, the level is sitting at 75% or 6/8. This actually leads me to believe that the data for the completion rate is simply incorrect. I just can't believe that out of only 8 attempts, 2 already failed or skipped/quit the level. At this point I think that Nintendo simply doesn't update the "successful attempts" correctly. Like, maybe if someone loses the internet connection for just a brief moment, a victory doesn't count. Or maybe some other factors lead to a victory not counting. At least that would explain why even the easy levels always have so damn low completion rates.

Guessing people skipped it just to spite you.
