Hi.

Erik557. Interview below. He runs Morton's Empire (y'know, that collab hack) and by the looks of things it'll be done before SMWCP 2! Hurrah! I declare a race.

Yep, please enjoy reading the interview! Don't just post "lolcongratz" without taking the time to read the actual interview you lazy fucks. Can I get away with saying that?

Also, anyone care to remind me of the CSS I use for the interview box next month because I'm constantly editing a previous interview for it...
Tahixham Hey, Erik557. How's things going?
Erik557 All fine and stuff. College just started but, looks like things aren't too busy.
Tahixham OK, so you're probably mostly known for the collab hack you're running, Morton's Empire. Tell us a bit about it!
Erik557 Oh, my main project right now. I started it around July, with 4 members of this site. At the end 2 left, so we took care of all.
Erik557 We then decided to made it open to the userbase. I really had no hopes about it, but at the end all was fine!
Erik557 All things were working, and I was surprised (I foresaw a bad future for it. :P)
Erik557 So 3 or 4 weeks ago, Lightvayne contacted me. He made me the offer of giving the hack its own subforum under the Collaboration Projects.
Erik557 I of course accepted. So I got all things working, and pointed a third member of this community to help me.
Erik557 Things are now going fine, I must say better than before, restricted to 1 thread. So I thank Lightvayne for giving me this opportunity.
Tahixham I see. So how did you feel when Lightvayne sent you that all-important PM?
Erik557 I felt very happy, specially because we were the first persons in having a succesful team hack (obviously not counting SMWCP :P), and being supported by staff was very special
Tahixham So who are the 'staff' per se of the hack, you also mentioned you got a third user on-board?
Erik557 At first, we were Centipede, Kaisaan, Nin and me. Kaisaan and Nin left, so Centipede and I took care of the hack until recently.
Erik557 The third member I mentioned is MercuryPenny, altough he is in a lower rank than we two.
Erik557 He mostly handles ideas, and is the main manager of the soundtrack.
Tahixham Ahh, I see. And how did the idea come about for the project? Was it you who thought of it all or was it the four of you together?
Erik557 At first I got the idea, and we all four developed in into what it's today. We changed some things, like the title of the hack.
Tahixham Well. While on the topic of SMW hacking, how did you get into it and find SMW Central?
Erik557 Way back into 2011 (how fast time goes on!) I saw the laser suit video and, in the comments, I read about Lunar Magic. I had a lot of interest into making my own levels, so I researched about this tool.
Erik557 I stumbled upon SMWCentral, and, without lurking too much, I registered. I actually lost interest very quickly, and left. I didn't become active until half-2012
Erik557 I really wasn't a well-known member back then, and in half-2013, when I both had no Internet in my home nor interest in hacking, I left again.
Erik557 I recovered my home internet in late 2014, but it wasn't until the end of March 2015 when I decided to come back. This place is really Hotel California, haha.
Tahixham You're not the first person who I've heard that discovered SMW hacking via that lazer suit video, haha!
Tahixham So I heard you have another hacking project, Mario & Waluigi - In Search of Luigi. Tell us a bit about that.
Erik557 My now-secondary project, and the first after my comeback. I wanted to do a hack with an innovative history, "breaking" all of the standards in the Mario timeline.
Erik557 I was just getting used to Lunar Magic again, so I decided to go simple, and vanilla. I planned sthe history and the levels I wanted to make, and started.
Erik557 I have to say that most of the design of the first levels was below standards, so I have redone a few of them.
Erik557 Right now I'm not working on it a lot, only when I have a burst of inspiration and motivation. Someday it'll get finished, I hope.
Tahixham So, you've been a member at SMW Central for almost four years. What's kept you sticking around for so long?
Erik557 Mainly the community. I think it's unique along the major communities in the Internet, principally by the diversity of people.
Erik557 I hope to stick around here some more years, or even forever!
Erik557 Also the fact that I still find SMW hacking interesting and fun.
Tahixham So, what kind of areas do you specialise in for SMW hacking, such as ASM, custom music, graphics, etc?
Erik557 I specialize more in ASM and music. I'm still a beginner to both, but learning those is fun.
Erik557 My knowledge in ASM is superior to the one in music, and probably it will ever be like that.
Erik557 I hope that someday, I master both areas so I can do some neat stuff. I still have a long way to go, but that doesn't make me step down.
Erik557 I also remember trying to draw graphics a few years ago. I'm pretty bad at drawing so I'm not trying it anymore lol
Tahixham Well then. That's all I have. Anything else you wish to add/talk about?
Erik557 I really have to thank all the community for the support in various stuff. Without them I would probably not be here. And I hope to become a more active member of the community, and meet more people.
Erik557 That should be all. Thanks for your time!
Tahixham Thank you too!
Be fun!
Congratulations, Erik! Running a collab hack is certainly not an easy thing to do, and I hope to see Morton's Empire finished. I'm sure it will be great based on what I've seen so far.
Grats! I'm really happy to see your collab going smoothly. Not implying that it should go slow or anything, but I hope it's still running when I'm able to design levels again :3
It's easily the best thing I've done
So why the empty numb?
Congrats! I've been following the progress of Morton's Empire since it was merged into its own subforum, and depending on how things will go, perhaps I may or may not help whip up a level for it (oh, and it's getting great based on what I've seen thus far, nice job on not giving up on it). The award was definitely deserved.
Windowless ride, feeling alive
Are you alive or just breathing?
Congratulations dude, you really deserved that nomination, specially after all time and effort you've spent on our collab. :)

My hacks: Justice for Mario / Unnamed Kaizo Hack
Gotta say, I was pretty surprised when I saw Morton's Empire got its own subforum. Frankly, I wrote it off as just another soon-to-be-dead collab at first. It's pretty admirable how far it has gotten - really shows determination on your part. Congrats!
I still remember the first collab hack I took part in that gained momentum from two years ago (Dark Side of the Kingdom).
Seeing that most collaborations that start but quickly end, and even bigger established names have had trouble with collabs, this one looks like it's going to be full of opportunity.

Before releasing any sort of playable demo, make sure you've caught the bugs and fixed them. It'll make a huge difference with the first impression, which is more important than you'd think.
How can I be MOTM?
By contributing to the community greatly in some way and being overall pleasant.
Your layout has been removed.
What he said.

I was asked to help moderate the temporary hacks, so I'm hoping that will really put my name out there.
Be active. If you are more active you are more likely to be noticed.

Be nice and respectful. Member of The Month is intended to be somewhat prestigious at least. If you are rude you will probably not be chosen.

Contribute. This could be anything -- helping people solve their problems, submitting resources, giving helpful feedback on hacks, or other things. We try to choose people who are having a positive impact on the community.

Those are really the guidelines I can think of. Ideally everyone would strive to do these things anyway, but yeah.
Erik557, you're making a good hack! Be in yourself!
What would Brian Boitano do?

Erik's collab has gotten much farther than I expected it to. However, I'm not at all surprised to see how far it has gotten, considering how well he has managed things, and how great his criticism and his will to help are. I have a feeling, considering the quality of the levels, the overworlds, the everything, and the and the and their designers, that this collab will be quite enjoyable.

:D Also congratz on being MOTM

i call bullshit

Anyway. Just be a pleasant guy to deal with and don't cause any trouble. It's actually really simple.
don't listen to someone that will never be a MoTM like me.
Love you Erik
