The 7th Annual SMWCentral Idol - Voting - FINAL ROUND

Link Thread Closed
Welcome to the voting thread! The procedure will be similar to the last few idols. Just rank all the entries in order from the one you like the most, to the one you like the least.

Something like this would work (you don't need the fancy bolds/colors):

#1: Entry name: reason/comments (not required, but preferred)
#2: Entry name: reason/comments
#3: Entry name: reason/comments
#4: Entry name: reason/comments

Happy voting!

1. title: really impressive use of smw instruments, the samples sound more fitting than i would have expected. very nice work
2. cherry: also very nice instrumentation. good use of smw drum samples without sounding like shit. builds quite nicely too
3. gameland forest: really nice sounding drum and bass, good instrumentation, little on the thinner side but still sounds very pleasing
4. thin clothes: another slow song with very nice instrumentation. gets a little too harsh/trebly sounding at times tho imo but its hard to help that with smw instruments.
5. seasmw: really like the piano and low brass but not so much the flute, and the composition itself is a little dull
6. crayon: sounds excellent but hella short, seems like it's just an intro
7. ourhisoutensoku: sounds pretty good though the panning on the cymbal gallop seemed very unnecessary and got irritating and the other drums really need to be more audible in a track like this
8. stardust speedway present: decent port but kind of a dull composition in the first place imo, and this port could really use some more bass to drive it a little more
9. oil desert: pretty cool but very thin sounding
10. green: intro sounded really good, but then it starts using a lot of the worst sounding samples in the game at the same time. the composition is really cool and some of the instruments sound very nice but the distortion guitar and steel drum take it down several pegs imo.
11. first steps: doesnt sound very nice with smw instruments tbh, parts of it are overly harsh and military style snare parts just dont work with smw's shitty snare sample. decent job but not a good song choice for the instruments
12. good future: really not a good choice with smw instruments. feels very different from the original and not in a way that really works to me, too thin sounding and lacking the groove that made the original good.
13. ghost: kind of cool. good use of panning effects, but it doesnt really progress enough as it goes on imo. it gets dull.
14. IDOL: it's boring to listen to. this kind of composition doesnt work with such thin instrumentation.
15. oldboy: i love oldboy but this really doesnt do the last waltz justice. sounds extremely thin and lifeless.
16. smb2 boss battle (8-bit): putting 8-bit in the title doesnt justify extremely thin instrumentation. it just doesnt sound good.
17. qoberto-tech: looooool

#1: Cherry.spc: This sounds pretty good, great work
#2: Crayon.spc: Sounds good but it's kinda short.

#1: Title: Holy hell, this is beyond fantastic! What a great cover that is!
#2: cherry: Extremely well made, very calm music.
#3: OurHisouTensoku: You can really feel the music coming through this one. Great job!
#4: FirstSteps: Great cover, sounds like a pre-game map selection or something. This one is truly under-appreciated
#5: Game Land - Forest: Great rhythm, great melody.
#6: green: Strong, well made song.
#7: Thin Clothes: Average song. Really slow, but well made. The SMW drum makes it sound weird though.
#8: ghost: Good use of the instruments, nice drums.
#9: GoodFuture: Decent use of the instruments
#10: seasmw: Not all that bad, but poor song choice. It's way too simple and repetitive.
#11: Stardust Speedway (Present): Decent, but the SMW instruments really killed it.
#12: crayon: Decent song, upbeat, but way too short.
#13: IDOL: Decent, but too simplistic.
#14: oildesert1: Doesn't sound all that good.
#15: Super Mario Bros 2 - Boss Battle (8-bit): An 8-bit song might not be what you want to cover in a contest.
#16: oldboy: Too simplistic, doesn't sound that good.
#17: qoberto-tech: Can't stop laughing!

No explanations because I suck at giving feedback...
Sorry if my commentary is kinda useless.

1. cherry: Absolutely beautiful.
2. Thin Clothes: I have never played or watched AIR (the only VN I've played was Morenatsu and I almost fell asleep like five minutes in). Still, the best of the ports in here.
3. Title: A lot of people gave this first place, but a part of me wants to give the first and second place to cherry and Thin Clothes. An amazing port, though. Good job. I really need to play Wind Waker, now that I can run Dolphin.
4. crayon: Short, yet upbeat. Feels like a Vocaloid song without the vocals (like an instrumental Nekomimi Switch).
5. Game Land - Forest: A very tribal-ish, jazzy song. The drums and the trumpets are superb.
6. green: Please tone down Channel 2. A phenomenal song outside of that.
7. seasmw: Squaresoft RPGs, my one weakness. A phenomenal recreation of the original.
8. Stardust Speedway (Present): A great cover of Stardust Speedway US in SMW's sound font. I don't even like the US soundtrack.
9. ghost: Quite atmospheric.
10. FirstSteps: A decent cover, but nowhere near the original. Reminds me a bit of Carol's better ports.
11. GoodFuture: Like FirstSteps, it's an ok cover, but it doesn't reach the original's level of quality. The abrupt loop doesn't help. Props for porting a song from the JP/EU soundtrack.
12. oldboy: I have never actually watched Oldboy (or read the manga that it was based on). Sorry.
13. oildesert1: Again, a decent port, but it could be better.
14. OurHisouTensoku: Too loud for my tastes.
15. IDOL: It's there, I guess.
16. Super Mario Bros 2 - Boss Battle (8-bit): ...
17. qoberto-tech: I laughed. I cried. I laughed again. Truly, it's VIP quality.

Yoshiatom's Post
TOP THREE
1. OurHisouTensoku.spc Sounds like it came straight out of an awsome spaceship shooter. Possibly the closest you can get to rock with SMW's samples.
2. green.spc More rock, although this switches a bit druing the song, still love it.
3. cherry.spc Great use of SMW's insturments, and and a great song in itself.

AVERAGE ENTRIES
4. 2SPOOKY I'm bitterly dissapointed this isn't a port of "Spooky Scary Skeletons" but it's good spookiness, and would make a great level theme.
5. Thin Clothes.spc A bit more ...somber? (is that the right word?) some nice use of SMW's instruments again, although this kind of song isn't really my type.
6. A Secret, Sleeping in the Sea Similar to thin clothes, but this feels a but repetitive.
7. Title Theme I'm a bit "Meh" on the theme it self, but this port is dead-on.
8. FristSteps.spc It is a good song, but I feel like something was lost in translation...
9. Forest BGM Seems a bit generic, but at the same time it's catchy.
10. Stardust Speedway doesn't have a good first imperestion, although it's nice around halfway through.
11. GoodFutre.spc lacks detph (three of the sounds chanells seem to be doing the same thing!) but it's fairly pleasnt to listen to.
12. Oil Desert Zone The insturments sound way to shrill, and it seems to loop early.
13. oldboy.spc Too slimplistic for it's own good. NEXT!
14. IDOL.spc Sounds like something you'd hear in a goddamed church. Aufluy quiet aswell.

BOTTOM THREE
15. crayon.spc I'll admit, this starts out nice, then it just... ends. When it was just starting to get interesting!
16. Boss Battle It's accrute, sure, but it leaves so much to be diseried. Add something more next time!
17. temp What IS this? It's chaotic, the intruments are ear-percing, it's plain horrible to listen to! W̧̮͔͓͚̖̙̻͓͈H̷̖̜̞̺̩O̶͚͔͖̥̲ ̨͎̯̹̩͔̦̜͢͠M̷̴̢͇̳͉͍͍͕̥À͇̯̯̗͕̻̕D̵̨͔̫̮͚̳̺̀ͅE̢̫̺͙̜̩ ̸͕̰͕̳̭́T̸̼̠̜̝̦͈̪͠͡ͅH̨҉̘̦I̯̻̠͜͞ͅŞ̘͙̯͎͔̯͞͝ͅ?̛͇̬͟ ̨̗̩̼̙̀ͅĮ͎͎͈̺̪͇͎ ̷̦̱̩͖͠W̵̳̘̲͎̲̠̱̰A̴̪̗͍̮͎N̪̖͍̯͇ͅT̷͍̜͙ ̝̖͖͕͇͖͕̲͞N̬̜ͅÁ͔̩̲͉͔M̵͍̞̰͎̩͢É̙̦̱͈͇̗S̶̛̹̼̪̰͖͖̣͇͜!҉̨̭͉͇̺̗̘̤͢

I'm pretty bad at ranking stuff but here goes:

~The Favorites~

#1 Cherry:
Niiiice. Really nice and soothing song and SMW's samples fit really really nicely. I really like how good SMW's dumb strings(???) sounded when used as ambience (it really added a lot to the song) and how well you used its percussion (the bongos, for instance, couldn't be more fitting).
#2 Title:
Good shit ℊℴoᴼ°°ºᵈd shℋiiᶦt right thℯre. Like how did you even make SMW's dumb strings(???) sound like an accordion?! And it's all so accurate to the original too! Would've placed it 1st but cherry is more interesting. Basically, I think I like both just as much.
#3 OurHisouTensoku:
I like the song and how you used SMW's samples, it's one of those where it's not immediately obvious you're not using custom samples. I really like the way you used the noise channel too.

~The Nice Ones~

#4 Thin Clothes:
Another nice and soothing song. Good instrumentation, nice echo too, but the glock can get a wee bit annoying, but there's really nothing you can do about that, so whatever.
#5 Game Land - Forest:
Cℴℴℓ beats. Nothing too impressive, but it sounds nice and the instrumentation is good too, so hooray!
#6 Crayon:
I would probably have put this in Game Land - Forest's place if it wasn't so short. I like the instrumentation a lot here (the bass especially), it really sounds like an intro theme for an old anime (judging by the title... is it Crayon Shin-Chan?). P nice.

~The Not As Nice But Still Fine ones~

#7 Green:
I like the strong percussion in some parts, but the steel drums really drag this down, and it kinda sounds like the flute sample thing is overthrown by everything else in some parts (or is it intentional?). The song is coolio, though.
#8 seasmw:
Nothing much to say here, but I like the accuracy in relation to the original here; like erga said, really good use of the brass and piano samples.
#9 Ghost:
Cℴℴℓ panning, but I was really expecting it to build up to a cool and silly/fun halloween song, but it just... looped. Like, it's fine, but it doesn't really do anything special. I think I was just really let down lol

~The Sanic Sector~

#10 Stardust Speedway (Present):
I think I'd place all these sanic songs in the same position if I could, because all of them suffer from the same problem: they lack the impact of the originals (thanks SMW). However, out of the 3, this one is the least jarring and actually is pretty ok. It's a shame that you couldn't emulate the sparkly chimes from the original.
#11 GoodFuture:
Doesn't sound as groovy as the original, and the missing bongos really don't help in that regard at all. It's pretty boring but nice use of SMW's dumb strings(???) as a sawtooth, I guess.
#12 oildesert1:
It's... pretty innacurate (well, compared to some of the renditions in this round, at least). The violin(???) thing used in the beginning really doesn't sound like the synth used in the original at all, and the... thing used in channel 5 gets annoying over time (it's not as loud in the original). It also kinda sounds like its pitch is lower than the original's.

~Those Who Barely Made It~

#13 IDOL:
It's slow and boring; some parts sound cool, but it's just really and unnecessarily long imo. Maybe it's just not my taste. SMW's samples also didn't help here.
#14 oldboy:
Idk what the original sounds like but this is a really dull waltz, I'm sure you could do better than that with SMW's samples.

^ayy lmao~~

#15 qberto-tech:
fug/10 :DD bretty gud :DDDDDDDDD :DDD :))
#16 First Steps:
I'm pretty sure if I got into porting this is what all of my ports would sound like.
#17 Super Mario Bros 2 - Boss Battle (8-bit):
The "8-bit" part in the title reminds me of those indie games with "retro" slapped in the description as a scapegoat for the effortless art.
Basically:

Looks like my rambling made this too long... oops.

E: Replaced "godawful" with "effortless" because it illustrates the idea better.
#1 cherry.spc: Delicious. Second best stratum of the series.
#2 Game Land - Forest.spc: Very catchy, and it manages to sound really good despite not using custom ADSR, so good job with that.
#3 green.spc: Not sure if this is a composition or a port, but it's still very well made. Perhaps my only complaint is that the pitch modulation in #3 sounds very dirty sometimes because it's using the percussion channel, but with the rest of the channels it isn't that noticeable.
#4 crayon.spc: I really like how this one sounds, although I have to agree with everyone else that it's too short.
#5 Title.spc: This is a pretty good port. I'm not a big fan of that @7 and the pitch modulation at 0:30, however.
#6 Thin Clothes.spc: Sounds beautiful. I don't think @2 fits too well at the second part, at least not with that release because of the nature of the sample.
#7 seasmw.spc: This is a pretty good port overall. Not a big fan of the echo since it's a bit too strong.
#8 ghost.spc: I kinda like it, but there is not much to comment on, and it gets boring after a while.
#9 Stardust Speedway (Present).spc: I don't like that @5, but the rest is pretty good.
#10 GoodFuture.spc: It's decent. I'd appreciate if next time you don't use the same attack for every channel, because most SMW samples don't sound that good at F attack.
#11 FirstSteps.spc: This is a good attempt, but for the love of whatever you believe in, don't use that much echo feedback in the future, it really ruins the whole song by making it extremely loud.
#12 OurHisouTensoku.spc: It's... okay, but damn, it's just so fucking loud. I also agree with ergazoobi about the drums; the panning change in the noise channel doesn't really make any sense, nor it helps the song at all. Also, the main percussion is barely audible at certain parts because of the main channels. I don't feel too good ranking it this low because of the effort put into it, but really, don't make your ports so damn loud in the future; I had to lower the whole computer's volume to listen to this, because even at 25% volume in the SPC player is still too much for my ears.
#13 oildesert1.spc: Sounds too empty, and for some reason you made the bass extremely quiet, which is something you really shouldn't do. Also, it might benefit from some panning and a stronger snare (like @29).
#14 oldboy.spc: Kinda reminds me of the GB Zelda games. Not much else to comment on though; it's just three channels playing an okay melody.
#15 IDOL.spc: Not sure how to feel about this one; it's calm, but also really boring to listen to.
#16 Super Mario Bros 2 - Boss Battle (8-bit).spc: Err... okay...? I mean, it's not bad, but why porting this instead of the remixed version?
#17 qoberto-tech.spc: 10/10 better than anything I could compose.
#1: cherry: fantastic
#2: ourhisoutensoku: great energy, sounds really good
#3: title: incredibly well done, not much to say here
#4: green: maybe my personal favorite but i have to mark it down cause the guitar sounds a little off
#5: a secret sleeping in the sea: like it a lot, really mysterious
#6: crayon: sounds great but way too short
#7: thin clothes: very nice, kinda slow for my tastes
#8: game land-forest: catchy
#9: stardust speedway (present): pretty decent
#10: ghost: interesting but gets a bit dull
#11: oldboy: decent but not too interesting
#12: good future: doesn't really capture the energy of the original
#13: oil desert 1: empty, one of the channels is kinda annoying
#14: IDOL: this one just never really goes anywhere and is way too quiet
#15: first steps: really just sounds empty
#16: smb2 boss battle: boring, honestly
#17: qoberto-tech: i lol'd
#1 - cherry Someone tell me I'm dreaming?
#2 - OurHisouTensoku I was highly impressed by some of the things that were done. Then again, who am I to say that?
#3 - Title
#4 - seasmw I remember the original well.. Nostalgia, but that isn't why I voted it this way. I think this is about as close to the original thing as you can get with something like this. Which also isn't the reason. The reason has escaped me, but it isn't unreasonable. (something around the lines of smooth orchestra, I think)
#5 - qlolberto-tech I legitimately liked this song. It was... overly busy but it sure sounded well organized...? I'd be tempted to use this in a ghost house honestly. A pink colored one.
#6 - Green It sounded pretty green.
#7 - Thin Clothes
#8 - Crayon
#9 - Game Land - Forest
#10 - GoodFuture I once heard a really jazzy remix of this, that was quite close to the original. (It was done for Sonic Megamix) I was a bit dissapointed by this, but it wasn't really bad, I think.
#11 - ghostWas hoping it would go into something with a nice saxophone (it already had the shuffle beat), but it never did.
#12 - First Steps I love the song, and it doesn't help that I kept hearing the original over this one. When trying intensly hard not to, however, it sounded a bit a bit dry; the stuttery noting is really what killed it. I think that.. most of mine would sound simillar to this for a good time if I got into this type of thing.
#13 - oildesert1
14 - Stardust speeeedway Present
#15 - IDOL I'm a sucker for soft themes, but this seemed rather uneventful, while it could've been just a bit more outgoing and less repetitive.
16 - oldboy Doesn't seem like much going on here, tad repetitive.

17 - SMB2 Boss Battle The original was bland, so is this. It is rather accurate to the original, but that doesn't make it sound better.

(this is all unbiased, I don't care what other people think about the songs)

ESPACIO EN RENTA

I'm no music expert, so the list might not be to everybody's liking.

Anyways, here it is:

1. Cherry - A nice calm song. It certainly is a great song to kick off the Idol.
2. Green - Despite sounding a tad off when @17 kicks in, it quickly fixes itself and sounds great.
3. Game Land: Forest - Really catchy tune.
4. Title - Pretty good sounding port.
5. Smwsea - Sounds as good as it can get with SMW samples.
6. Ghost - A song that could probably fit well with VLDC ghost house levels.
7. Thin Clothes - Sounds like a typical RPG town tune to me. #tb{:]}
8. FirstSteps - Sounds good, although I prefer the version that's already available on the site.

9. OurHisouTensoku.
10. GoodFuture.
11. Stardust Speedway (Present).
12. Crayon.
13. Oldboy.

Merry voting!
you people and your undertale

1. Another Medium - UNDERTALE - Again, absolutely beautiful.
2. agroover - Those samples... Ganbare Goemon, correct? They're amazing. I prefer this to the original, to be fair.
3. gf-staff - Very mysterious sounding. Kinda like an RPG dungeon theme.
4. stellar - Upbeat and jazzy~
5. neo-angloise - Feels kinda like retro Falcom or Compile. I really like this one.
6. Dilemma - Quite relaxing. Has a very icy, watery feel to it.
7. waterfall - Somewhat regal-sounding. I can't really compare it to the original due to fear of being spoiled.
8. weather - A pretty good port of Good Weather from Mr. Gimmick.
9. stage4 - Seems familiar. Not a bad port. Has a worldpeace-like vibe to it?
10. BadApple!! - A good recreation of the PC98 soundfont. Nothing else to comment on, really.
11. airship - Eh, I'm not too into most Mario 2D sidescroller music.
