As it is, Super Mario Maker has a LOT of content including a ton of objects and enemies to choose from, many unique new ways to place objects, such as making ANYTHING come out of a pipe or ? Block, and 4 different themes to play with. With one of the main hooks of SMM as a game being expandability, wouldn't it be neat to have new features and the like added in the future? If Nintendo decides to release DLC, what would you like to see? I'll start off.

MORE THEMES
Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros 3, Super Mario World, and New Super Mario Bros U are far from the only 2D Mario platformers out there. How about Super Mario Bros 2 or the Super Mario Land games? Maybe even Yoshi's Island style could be added, if only aesthetically. My top 2 picks for new themes would be Super Mario Bros 2 and Super Mario Land 2. Of course, the latter seems much more likely given that it wouldn't require too many changes in game mechanics, with the Carrot/Bunny power being the most drastic. SMB2, on the other hand, would require more engine work given its wildly different playstyle compared to other 2D Mario games. On a related note, why not have the option added to have the SMB1 and SMB3 themes rendered in their 16-bit style from Super Mario All-Stars?

MUSIC PACKS
One big thing that SMM lacks when compared to SMW hacking and SMBX is the ability to put in whatever song you want. I imagine that the reason Nintendo didn't implement this into Super Mario Maker is because of potential copyright challenges. One way they could get around this is by offering downloadable music packs featuring music from Mario games not represented in SMM or even other Nintendo games. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to build a forest level in the SMW style and use the Forest Maze music from Super Mario RPG in it?

Most important to me would be checkpoints, next on the list would be more music/music selection or, even better, a music composer like in Mario Paint.

I bet most of this will never happen so don't get your slopes up. Anyways

More level themes (desert, snow, athletic, beach, etc.) and alternate background choices. Maybe also a large decoration object like a tree or something, but that's not really necessary.

Vertical levels and wrap-around like that one world 8 level in NSMBDS

Checkpoints

More kinds of dynamic platforms to mess with (snake blocks, rotating platforms, airship bolts, tilting platforms, swinging platforms, etc.) naturally all of these could be attached to line guides

Standalone water and lava blocks, as well as quicksand + water/sand/lava geysers

Ice flower would probably be a pretty easy powerup to implement

Throw blocks and SMB2 mushroom blocks

Yoshi berries (decorative in SMB/SMB3) and SMB2 vegetables

Bubbles and parachutes that can contain enemies and objects

! switches and corresponding blocks

Those giant skewers, with functionality similar to the burners (shake to reverse its timing, can be rotated)

Wind with adjustable timing and strength

Dark levels and light blocks

? Ball from SMB3; drag over an enemy and it will drop this upon death for boss-death goals; if the enemy falls off a cliff, just give it to Mario automatically

Line-guide chainsaws and ropes (height/direction adjustable)

More specialized boss options (reznor, boom boom, koopalings)

I would honestly buy the game for this.

I would have to say maybe slopes and message boxes we could put in.

@RPG Hacker: Music Composer? I can only imagine the kinds of things people like RednGreen and Jimmy52905 would make with that. Of course, the music would have to be uploadable and useable in levels.

I should have something witty to put here (even if it's just to update dated info), shouldn't I?

- Slopes
- Checkpoints
- "Smart"/Progressive Power Up Blocks
- More Powerups.
- More level themes. (Desert, Ice, Desert/Ice Cave, Forest, Mountain, Sky, Beach, Lava, etc)
- Water/Lava "Tiles"
- Fire Bros
- Boomerang Bros
- Ice Bros
- Ability to set level music.
- Thwimps
- Skewers/"Layer 2" stuff.
- Spikes (enemy)
- Red/Yellow Koopas
- Flame/Fire Chomps
- Play as a proper Luigi

...to name a few.

Beside stuff that's already been posted I want Boom Boom and event triggers so you could actually make boss battles you can't just skip
A basic palette editor (say you pick from a list of 25 pre-defined colours, and the ground and brick tiles change colour to match).

A background chooser. With this and the palette editor, people can create many kinds of levels, such as snow and desert levels, without Nintendo having to build predefined version of those levels.

A music selector similar to Lunar Magic (if people want the underground theme to play in an overworked level, let them).

When shaking Munchers, they turn into the white jumping Munchers from SMB3.

Boss Rooms: the exit, such as a pipe or a door, is placed but will not appear until all of the enemies in the room are defeated. They could be a separate kind of sub-level.

Add additional properties to enemies by giving them Fire Flowers. Give a Pirahana Plant a flower in SMW to turn it into a Jumping Fire-Spitting Pirahana Plant. Give a flower to a Hammer Bro to turn it into a Fire Bro. Give one to a winged Spiny to make it shoot fire instead of spines.

A basic music editor (something akin to Anvil Studio or Virtual Piano) with predefined samples based on the game mode. I would gladly give up SPC editing to take porting to Super Mario Maker.

Amiibo sprites for other game modes.

Flags:
- Level is slippery
- Level has high gravity / low gravity
- Level will be cleared when time runs out
- Level can only be cleared while wearing an Amiibo costume
wall of text warning

I think many of the things posted would be incompatible or broken for one or more reasons. Such as slopes, checkpoints and progressive powerups. Music composer might be cool but abusable to the point of making incredibly uncomfortable music play much like sound effects playing left and right in some levels already. Music select would let you set unfitting music (water music in castle level, etc) in a level. Water/lava tiles would let you place ugly as sin floating water and lava everywhere. Koopalings and such would not differ much from Bowser Jr. They'd have to be in their SMB3 form as SMW and NSMBU ones have a specific special stage made for them. Message boxes would allow swears and ASCII dicks in the game, something Nintendo would not like. Your level's title, coins and arrows and miiverse comments let you point out things in your course already. Its not like you can introduce new mechanics that are unique to your level since it can be done on any other course too, anyway.

I understand some people would make great use of things like this but sadly it really would only be some people. Because most of these would be easily abusable and no level is moderated, a lot of them would end up in 100 Mario challenge. You can already see the effect of this to some extent. Most levels you get there are pretty bad or mediocre.

A 100 Mario challenge mode composed of levels with a decent amount of stars may be a work around this but then you'd get a bunch of automatic or musical courses.

id rant more but its late so w/e

Anyway...

What I'd want is more themes or backgrounds at the very least. More enemies and vertical levels would be nice. Also I think Bowser takes a shitload of hits. He can throw down bombs but it takes like 30 of them to kill him, which takes up a lot of time, so setting his and Jr's HP should be an option. Changing what they throw, much like Lakitu, allows for more options.

Something I'd like to see is unlisted/private levels. You'd be able to let people "beta" test courses before uploading publicly the final version of your level. This would also let you upload levels with recorded sound effects for your friends only. Problem would be the level's filesize would be increased significantly which would have an effect on Nintendo's servers.

One thing that annoys me is how you cannot see the levels your friends uploaded in-game. You have to load up miiverse, look for their posts, write down a code of theirs, type it in and star or follow them individually. They should make a "friends" tab under the Makers option in the Course World. This would let you keep better track of when they upload a new level.

That reminds me, that even if you follow a Maker, the game will not notify you when they upload a new level. It would be nice to have a notification that alerts you of that. If you follow a lot of people that might cause a bit of flooding but they could make it so you can sort notifications out.

A flaw I think the game has is that you will not be prompted to give a level a star if you skip it from 100 Mario challenge. This means difficult levels are left out often from so many automatic levels and music courses. I think there should at least be an option so you can give a skipped level a star. You can look at the levels you've skipped under your played courses list but I don't think many people will do that. Maybe it was considered but left out, as it would regulate difficulty to a certain point?
i just want more stars

A replay upload feature, much like Mario Kart's or Smash would be nice. Sadly it would fall into Smash 4's 3 minute limit too, I'd bet. A pause screenshot mode (like smash4's again) and album would also be nice.

Another borrowed feature I'd like to see is being able to create communities like in Mario Kart. Imagine being able to play 100 Mario challenge compromised of levels made from users here? That would be splendid. It would also cut down on the individual code inputting.

Overall, I'd like to see more features in the game rather than content for the course maker. I do think there is a decent amount of things in the course maker to make great and unique levels, at least for what Mario Maker is intended for. I would not mind more enemies and platforms and such, though. More options means more variety.
So basically, prevent all new content because users could make bad levels with it? To me, that's like saying "the game should really stick to it's day one content, because all these new items (doors, warp pipes, invisible coin blocks), they just motivate people to make bad levels". Or like saying "the video length limit on YouTube should really be only five minutes, because no time restrictions really just causes the users to upload even longer, bad videos". Bad user content should never be a reason not to introduce certain new features, unless you can't avoid said user content, which in this case you can. You can still just skip bad levels, as always, just like you can decide not to watch a bad video on YouTube.

tbh while it would be kinda cool to have new level content introduced after launch it would be too much of a hassle

it'd also have to all be free - downloading levels would allow you to use those features without actually paying for it

@slopes: no real user-friendly way to implement them, and mario maker is obsessed with user-friendlyness

vertical levels

i made a proof of concept for this, but it's kind of a dumb workaround http://smwc.me/1242481

Actually, I can think of at least one way to introduce slopes in, both, a consistent and a user-friendly way. Just make the user shake the regular ground blocks to get slopes, just like with the diagonal rails. The user could then turn (or mirror) these slopes simply by tapping them. Nothing too complicated about it. You wouldn't even really need too many slope variants. In fact, just the 45° variant would be enough and would already add a lot. However, even other slope variants are thinkable for me. They would just have to make the blocks bigger. If certain slope blocks consisted of multiple tiles, they could still be easily placed in the level without the user having to worry about how slopes fit together - they would simply always fit together. I don't think that would add that much trouble for the user.

Literally just give us a slop object and give it resize pins like the ledges and mushrooms.

Bowser and Bowser Jr are best suited in their own rooms, too. That didn't stop anyone.

Sturgeon's Law applies to everything- Mario Maker as it is is no different. SMW Hacking is no different either.

Basically, everything that has been said is what I want as well.

-Slopes (I've been trying to convert all my LM levels to SMM and a few I had to modify because there is no slope option and I have a few levels that are mostly slopes and I cannot convert it because it will change the overall theme.)
-Vertical levels and more sub levels. (Same as above)
-Placeable Bullet Bills and Banzai Bills (SMW style that is). (Not to mention making the launchers bigger and BB Generators wouldn't hurt, like the diagonal bills in smw)
-Different themes (seems to be a general consensus but I like the idea of a pallet changer for this effect)
-Message Box (while, yes people could abuse this, but Nintendo could check for bad language and, as for ASCII dicks, that's what the report button is for)
-More enimies such as boom boom/the sun/thwimps(could add mini shroom/poison shroom for mini enemies) (Obvious: more enemies)
-Music composer/Downloadable Music packs (For obvious reasons. I know this could be abused, again, that's what the report option is for.)
-More item options (You know ice flower , mini shroom, poison shroom.)
-Wind generator/with graphics (because it can add to the diificulty of a level)
-Placeable Water/Lava (it changes depending on if you're in a castle or not. As for the aforementioned god ugly floating water: it could turn into a water bubble (as seen in other Mario games) if the water is not touching ground. If not that then its the designers level and just don't star it)
-Boss rooms (That could trigger the level end or secret exit end (see next point), or, at least, something that, when the room is cleared a warp pipe/door appears)
-Secret Exit option (Because that just leads to the next item that I'd like to see)
-Freakin' Overworld (Yes, this would be a big addition, and yes, I realize that this option would be the least likely rhing added. But along with the message blocks this would add a story telling element to the game.)

Some, if not all, of these things can be abused, but as I've mentioned more than once, the report button is there for a reason.

--------------------
My Super Mario Maker Levels are @ here
Regarding message blocks: You can kind of use Miiverse for that. You can paste Miiverse messages whereever you want in your level, so that's kinda like having message boxes. Other people can places messages too, sure, but from my experience, they rarely do.

--------------------
Feel free to visit my website/blog - it's updated rarely, but it looks pretty cool!
@Palette/color editor: This could work as a paint bucket. Select a color, then tap on the part of an object whose color you want to change. Rather than changing a single color, though, this would change a group of colors, like all the browns in the dirt or greens in the grass. An example would be coloring the SMW grass white. The lightest green would turn white, while the darker green would turn either gray or a light blue.

@Background chooser: I could imagine this being implemented as an icon similar to the insert image icon in our post editing toolbar, i.e. a generic photo of mountains and sunshine. Tapping it would display a selection of possible background images that you could just tap to select.

@Additional themes: My top picks for this would be desert, snow, and forest. There's already a forest theme in SMW and, I believe, NSMBU, while all but SMB1 have snow and desert themes.

In addition to these things, I've come up with a couple more DLC suggestions of my own.

POKEYS
These would especially be great if a desert theme gets added. When placed, the Pokey would have 3 segments and be yellow, like it is normally. The Pokey would have a resize option that would allow the player to give it as many as maybe 8 or 10 segments. The Pokey could also be shaken, which would turn it into a green Pokey that moves faster.

TIMED LIFTS
I could see those timed lifts from SMW's Valley of Bowser 3 working well in Mario Maker. When placed, they'd have 1 second on them, and the time could be increased by tapping the number. Normally, they'd go right, as they do in SMW, but they could also be placed on a track, which they would follow until their timers expire.

SHY GUYS/SNIFITS
These would come in red and blue varieties, with the latter staying on platforms like red Koopas. These would start out as Shy Guys, but would turn into Snifits when shaken.

Aren't the Skull Rafts in Mario Maker already similar to this?
