Tip: Layer 3 backgrounds and tides disappear when you hit a message box, so plan your level around that. For example, you can add a sublevel without layer 3 at the start/midpoint, and include your message there. Not logged in.

I like this idea as well.
Honestly with the moving layers it kinda reminds me of some of the water levels you'd see in Rayman Origins.
That all said this looks so good man. Keep up the solid work.

Not finished yet.

circadian, hmmm?

looks great though wye. your eye for aesthetics are one of a kind.

My hype cannot be contained with this project... seriously dude, you might as well include the kitchen sink in this because you practically have done everything possible for this game.

the only other thing missing is redrawn mario, but you already stated no and I like him as he is so

After a couple of busy-ish weeks, it looks like I'll have most of June free enough to work on this hack.

For now, here's a couple of screenshots of 4-3 which is now finished. Color-wise this level is very heavy on the blues, so to balance it I made the blocks and coins more orange than usual, which makes for a nice warm-cold contrast. Happy enough with this one, overall!

and now I should be- good lord what is happening in there?

(longer and faster gif, 8MB)

Moving on to 4-S, which is world 4's secret level. I'm not 100% sure about a gameplay gimmick for this one, but for the visual gimmick I wanted to (and did) go with aurora borealis.

I think it's come out really nicely, thanks in part to some helpful feedback on Discord - notice how the aurora has a bit of parallax scrolling to it, the stars are shining through it, and it's glowing more or less smoothly.

It's very nice! Tell me, WhiteYoshiEgg. Did you leave original SMW musics (Without SMW custom musics)?

--------------------
Currently working on The Mario's Greatest Adventure. My next projects will be The Mario & Stitch vs. Devil Ztar Trilogy (MSU-1 only with some SPC), The Mario's Greatest Adventure CD (MSU-1 only), Super Mario Land 4: Wario's Return, Super Mario Star Ocean (SM64 hack) and Super Mario 64+ (SM64 hack). My list of music request is in my bio. List Graphics
Glad you like it!

It will have custom music when it's finished.

Um- Aurora borealis? At this time of year? At this time of day? In this part of SMW Central? Localized entirely within your level?

Really, really great job with this one and that water level as well!
I have a Discord server as well!

Back to working on my VLDC12 level!

Ah. And before to put custom musics. Will you make another patch but without custom music, please? It's also to make sure that it's working well in MSU-1.

Thanks.

That's a big maybe. If MSU-1 means the hack must be AddmusicK-free, it'd be a bit of a hassle to make a separate version.

I managed to get 4-S done today for some reason! This level only took a week - if I can keep up that rate (probably can't), I might be able to have a gameplay video ready for C3 after all. Guess we'll see.

Unlike most of my levels, I built this one (and the last) without sketching out setup ideas on paper first. I think I'm getting the hang of that!

4-S ended up involving penguins and platforms almost exclusively. The design here is very much inspired by the levels in JUMP et al. where the setups have that nice flow to them - if you know the layout of 4-S, you can breeze through the entire level in one huge satisfying choreography. I think that's turned out pretty cool!

--------------------

On to 4-4!

I ended up having only one layer of background trees (i.e. no parallax scrolling in this level) in favor of layer 3 snow. That adds quite a bit of depth though and hides the lack of parallax, so it works out nicely.

Gameplay-wise, I think I'll go the slightly lazy route and base things off my VLDC7 entry, which means line guides, Fuzzies and Pitchin' Chucks. (maybe I'll be even lazier and rip some setups straight from there? #ab{^^;;;})

The Fuzzy graphics are of course original, although they ended up quite similar to SMW's (the way I usually draw eyes didn't work out here for example). I did give them some shading though, as well as a much brighter palette to contrast with the dark background.

--------------------

I did indeed think these Fuzzies were original to SMW until I zoomed in. Cool progress, though!
I have a Discord server as well!

Back to working on my VLDC12 level!
C3 is approaching faster than I thought, and I might not have enough of world 4 done by then to put up a gameplay trailer like I intend. It's definitely making me work faster though!

For instance, here's 4-4 done:

I ended up putting a small outside section at the end, and making an entirely new background for it. Pretty happy with how that turned out! Here's a bit of that in action, too.

For years now, your screenshots have been the prettiest things I've seen in a SMW hack. I'm glad you're still working on it steadily, as I look forward very much to the experience of playing it. It shows how much effort and polish goes in every tiny detail of your project. Keep it up!

The only thing I can really comment on is what I already said on Discord, the snow animation is a little odd if you pay too much attention to it due to the way it's done, but I think it is worth keeping regardless as the effect does work very well (and it's creatively done).

I think you might want to buckle down and finish it. Once you see the light at the end of the tunnel then you know you got this.

But remember you also need time for beta testers and feedback. There is a lot of fine polish that goes into these projects at the end.
I just went through this whole thread to see everything you've done since this hack just looks like you've poured your whole heart into it. While I really like your style, which seems like a marriage of photo-realistic textures and hand-drawn line work, what really got me excited was seeing how it all came together with the level design, the integration of the gameplay gimmicks and environments thereof, and the endless atmospheric touches to make this a comfy, casual, relaxing experience-to-be.

- I really loved the wheat field theme with the bales too: not only is it original but it's just so inviting.
- The Big Boo literally looks like he's saying "boo" when he follows you and that made me laugh.
- Your sea level is very much popping with color!
- Love the background layering of the autumnal forest with the falling leaf platform gimmick. This level is an example of straight-forward but involved action I love in a platformer, as I can see bite-sized samples of from your trailer of other levels.

Eight years is a long time, but it's easy to see how it takes that long when you're mostly solo on this project and making serious endeavors.

There's one question I have: how is your ROM's free space at this stage of development? (That has been a death knell for a few ambitious projects in the past, but you're also very seasoned - no pun intended - and I expect you have been making optimizations as often as possible.)

Just look above you...
If it's something that can be stopped, then just try to stop it!

Yep, I'm planning for a lengthy testing phase at the end where I hand out stuff to testers and simultaneously make revisions. Ideally that would begin in a couple of months, but we'll see - for now I hope I can get two more levels done until C3.

Hey Counterfeit, great to see you back! So nice of you to take the time to sift through it all, and I'm glad you like what I made. #tb{:)}

Luckily, space so far isn't nearly as much of an issue as I thought! Even with more than half the content done, my ROM is still 2MB out of 4. It seems what weighs large hacks down is less the resources and more the sheer length, and mine only has four and a half worlds worth of stuff.
(Though I have yet to receive and insert all of the music, so if that turns out to be the biggest space hog I'll have to do some serious compressing elsewhere.)
