It works with Idol so I don't see why not.
Congrats to everyone!

I could complain about the cutoffs but honestly, I don't care. Certain hacks make me not care about certain design rules, for example, I've always found the not upside down munchers at ceillings in kaizo hacks strangly appealing. And the curoff rope from automatic levels sorta has the same appeal to it, especially since we got the music to concentrate on rather than the level.

It's weird but I actually agree with you, I'm usually pretty particular about palettes and things looking nice, but for whatever reason stacks of cement blocks and rows of munchers don't bother me in this hack, the same way that rope cutoff doesn't bother me in this level. I kinda attribute it to a sense of nostalgia, since those two videos were like the first videos I ever saw of mario hacking (and same for many others), and it also just makes sense I guess for those levels to have that. I've always found that graphics matter less in automatic levels, with level design being the most important factor, just like in Kaizo hacking. Of course, that doesn't mean graphics should be completely ignored in either of these, it's just that it's not the most important element, at least for me.

Anonymous contests sound like a good idea.

--------------------
I get the feeling like the idea of public voting is wrapped in the concept of anonymous entries.
Anonymous contests ? Well I do not really even give a shit but I hope you enjoy it.

I was thinking more of there not being the need of 100% anonymousity. Just a compromise from the judges to not check any submissions before the contest is over, and in the end someone would wrap all entries in a huge .zip, number them and give them to the judges. In the case of VLDC working like that they should have no access to progress threads as well.
I'm so happy to see that I finally won a contest. Thanks for all the compliments and congrats to the other winners.

You read in my level as well. Yes, I did run out of time. At first, I tried to make it sync on an external music that was 2 min 30 long, and I realized there was no way I could pull that off with the time remaining. So I switched to an easier and shorter one, Athletic, and I did Castle as well because I thought it would be easy and quick. Turns out it was already 8th before I could decently finish it, so yeah, I half-assed it. Considering making 5s of it takes about 1h, I still put in a lot of my weekends and nights.

Since you're asking for it, I'll do the extended version of the castle with all the badass segments I couldn't do :)

If you don't want the same people winning every time, then perform better than them.

If that is what it takes to get the same people to stop complaining that they didnt win over and over again, i can get behind that.

I strongly doubt it will.

IIRC, Idols are largely voted on by the userbase, who are much more suspect to voting based on who and not what.

Idol entry authors are anonymous for public voting and its generally pretty hard to pin down who made what song with the rounds that have larger amount of entries, so I'm really not sure how that's the case.

Why should we box if floyd mayweather wins all the time, same logic.

It is more understandable for entries to be anonymous when the userbase has a direct hand in who wins. Trying to make a level design contest anonymous because a small handful of people are upset that they got beat in a fair fight with better opponents is pointless.

Stop making excuses and beat them at their own game.

Thing is people are not trusting judges anymore, if you didn't figure it out. Why not disallow them to know who made what, just to make sure people stop complaining? I say that in respect to the entrants who feel wronged, but also I'm kind of tired of seeing people like Mog who don't give a shit about the site anymore but like to sneak in and complain because they're given reasons to, if you ask me. And besides, I think it wouldn't really cause any harm to try this out.
To me, the biggest problem was that the scoring defined at the beginning of the contest was not followed at all.

Creativity/Complexity (25): Did your entry contain a good amount of neat quirks and "automated puzzles" that made it unique and fun to watch, or did it consist of nothing but a bunch of note blocks and moving platforms, and/or was just overall very repetitive?

Party House is not worth 25/25 in this category.

It just feels the judges had an idea of a note /50 after viewing the level, and split the points evenly in the 3 categories.

As for NGB's entry, since not everybody can use ASM to play with inputs, I would have been a little more strict. If you're going that way, then why Mario does not climb stuff, break turning blocks by spin jumping and so on? Replace the part when Mario is moving with boost blocks and the whole thing relies on Mario spin jumping on flying stuff (except for when Mario ducked under a fireball).

Congrats to Wakana, Jack, NGB and nick, keep rocking.

You're implying that judges for contests like these are less likely to be biased. That's a pretty biased thing to say, you know.

I'm not even very interested in automatic levels. I was just talking with a bunch of people and I considered what Mogsiah said to be absolutely spot-on. If you, as a staff member, simply put up a blind eye to this then I think staff has a bigger bias issue than the community.
Welp.
We are currently discussion doing annonymus judging so there you go. Personally, I doubt it will change much.
Let's just take this contest for example. I don't think ANYTHING would have changed if the judges had not known who made them.
Likewise, once we actually give this a try and the same people will probably sill win (because they are good at making these levels so duh, of course they will do good at the same type of contest again) except that people will then complain about stuff having been leaked or whatever as long as they don't have to accept it.
And on another note, judging is always gonna be biased on the judges, simply because they have different oppinions on things. I already explained how things would have probably been different for this contest, had, for example, I been a judge instead of sinc-x as we seem to have a somewhat different mindset on this.

They will find something else to complain about.

A person feels wronged because they got outplayed by a better opponent and don't want to admit it?

That's his own problem and I wouldn't be surprised if he just would find something else to complain about.

Waste of time when the outcome turns up to be the same.

Judging bias is typically easier to spot and remove from the equation. Regular members are usually more likely to vote for their buddies in a contest where user voting determines the winner, so it would make sense that those types of contests have anonymous entrants.

No, because it is a waste of time to go through all of these motions all because a small number of people are mad that a better opponent consistently beats them fair and square but refuse to step their game up so they find the first excuse they can think of.

Worth noting that none of the people complaining even entered, no clue why they're so butthurt about this.
