I wonder, if we could come up with a ROM Expander, like Lunar Expand, we could have more space for music and animations.

--------------------
Polaris is cool. I think. Can't confirm.
I'm not so sure as I don't have knowledge of ASM, but from what I've heard the SA-1 chip that runs all the special effects prevents the game from being expanded.

However, there is a talented man that goes by the name darkkefka that has expanded the ROM, somehow. He increased the level cap to 99, which is only possible through expansion. We should ask him.

Thank you!

Unless there's something really weird going on with SMRPG, you're thinking of the Super FX.

SA-1 actually supports 6 and 8MB ROMS in addition to 1, 2 and 4 MB.

I did a quick Google search and found that, yes it can be expanded. Now if this can be used for extra animation and music space, is not something I know.

If we pull off the expansion, maybe someone with decent programming can edit Lazy Shell to acknowledge this and use the free space?

If I recall correctly, someone was working on a SMRPG expansion at some point, which expanded several options from the original game(More space for text, events, etc.)
He even added a 6th character to the game!

now, where did that project went....no idea but let's hope it was not canceled(maybe it was abandoned long time ago?)

Not true
Even if you "expand" the level cap, you are still limited to the 4MB. The pointers doesn't let you point anything over the 4MB area.

I didn't know that. We should still ask anyway. He has a thread up for these kinds of questions.

Oh no, it's possible to use the expanded space, you just have to initiate a bank switch segment of code to do so.

The only problem with that in emulation debugging is that you'd probably have to stick with bSNES (Which isn't really bad per se) since SNES9X mirrors things incorrectly.

I had to do some bank switching when I was working on adding Daisy into SMRPG (As another playable character that doesn't go over anyone). The expanded space definitely does work as I was able to shove all the menu text and game text into it. It's just kind of an ass to work with is all.

Edit: The only reason that project faltered was due to the fact I was unable to trace the problem with bank swapping when I was initiating it during dialogue, it'd actually screw with the sprite data that the SA1 used. I couldn't debug it at the time since no emulator technically could. Turns out, bSNES+ can do that so I might hop back into that project in the future.

But yes, the message to get through is that you CAN initiate bank swap, you just have to be 'reaaaaaaally' wary on when you're doing it and to what. If you do do it, it should be extremely quick so it doesn't mess anything up.
