Super Linkdead World DEMO: A Kaizo-Light Hack

Hey SMWCentral! Thanks for checking out this thread. Anyways, I'm showing off my newly finished easy-Kaizo hack, Super Linkdead World. Right now I only have a demo of nine levels, but these nine levels should be able to show the style and direction of this hack. So go ahead and try it out here:

Download!

About the hack

Some of you may know that previously this year I released Banzai Mario World, a Kaizo with ASM and tons of custom stuff. With this hack, however, I aimed to rely almost entirely on using vanilla sprites and vanilla gimmicks in a unique way, like the original Kaizo's. This also means that I kept the difficulty to around the level of the original Kaizo's as well. My goal was to recreate the thrill of playing the original Kaizo Mario World; to do this, I tried to use completely original gimmicks and ideas. I wanted to continue the naming trend of naming hacks after people (Super Panga World, Super Dram World, Super Foss World) so I named this hack Super Linkdead World after Linkdead, the first person to beat Banzai Mario World without savestates. He's a speedrunner and a good singer as well.

So what's in this hack?

SLW has a free-movable overworld so you can try out any level you want in any order. There's nine levels total, but one of the levels has a secret exit (hint: it's the puzzle one) and there's a "hidden" credits "level" as well. This hack also has some ASM to make the hack more fun:
-automatic save feature
-infinite lives, so no game overs (unlike Banzai Mario World)
-custom music in every level!

Also, as you can see all the graphics and palettes are vanilla. I'm gonna change these in the future and make them look nicer, but for now it's gonna be vanilla graphics until the real hack is released sometime in 2017 the future.

Screenshots and level names

Since there's only nine levels, I'm gonna show off screenshots for all nine.

GET REXT

LET'S KICK SOME ICE

SEA THE PROBLEM?

TIDES ARE CHANGING

SLIP SLIDIN' AWAY

LOOK OUT BELOW

DIGGIN IT

SMASHING

TOO MANY DOORS

By the way, if you have trouble beating this level just post it here; if enough people have trouble I'll post a walkthrough.

Enjoy! And thanks for checking out this hack! You're welcome to post your feedback/issues.

Here's a sneak peak of what a level will
look like once/if I add custom palettes.
Ohh, light kaizo. Finally some difficult yet (hopefully) still fun hack to play.
I generally enjoy things that are on the difficulty level of kaizo or around that, can't do much with pit hacks.

I also like the vanilla approach. I did a hack in the same style, so maybe that's why... or vice versa. Anyway, I approve of using vanilla in unque ways (if the hack actually hold true to these words :P) I'll give this a try later

I played this hack before, and as always, you didn't disappoint. The difficulty was balanced pretty well, and the whole experience becomes appealing. Some people try to go for making their hacks easier but end up failing afterwards, that being undoubtedly true since they're mostly based around harder hacks.

I'll wait for more progress from this. Looks promising.
Lovely kaizo hack, which really feels like a real part of the kaizo series. Similiar mean traps, similar tricky jumps, but the traps and jumps are still completly new.

Get Rext: was a good introduction level, not too hard but still way to hard for me to do savestateless :p
Let's Kick Some Ice: had the funniest traps. When you finally manage to do a jump, a second later you die by a pokey, which fell on your head :D. But it's more funny than frustrating.
Sea The Problem?: perfectly shows how good underwater kaizo levels work (where you can't cheat by swimming under the level), with interesting little puzzles build in.
Tides Are Changing: had a fun gimmick and was the first one to be a bit more frustrating, as you had to react incredible fast in some situations, which resulted in me rewinding 5 screens back and making play these again. But that's not your fault, I'm just not that good :D.
Slip Slidin' Away: however was a really pain in the ass, because it took me about 10 times to do the one goomba jump at the beginning of the level. You didn't know when you should jump on the goomba, so you can jump on him a bit later. The worst thing however was that you were in a hurry all the time, because you need the "flying grey platforms". Too frustrating for me.
Look Out Below: was the most creative level from the demo and really reminded me of the third level from KMW3, just in much better. Was also good to have an easier level again.
Diggin It: didn't really stand out that much, but wasn't bad either
Smashing: was kind of like "Tides Are Changing" just a bit trickier and a bit more fun.
Too Many Doors: was confusing, but I figured it out on my own. However it took me forever to understand what to do in the infinite loop after the midway point. And it's a puzzle that's not just about item-babysitting.

It's the best kaizo hack I've played in a while, so much creativity you're normally just used when playing one of the kaizo series.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! :D

Yeah that's definitely a problem that's difficult to avoid. I find the best way to avoid that is to test the levels without savestates, but in this hack I think I kinda made some stuff too difficult sometimes; this will hopefully be fixed in the final version.

Oh yeah, Worse Than Kaizo right? I've played that hack before, hacks like that one helped give me inspiration for my easy-difficulty Kaizo hacks!
So I tried this out and the first level I played(Too Many Doors) was good but
when you take the pswitch and go up into the pipe into the right, the switch disappears(due to sprite memory issues I think?). Idk what even happened but yeah.
Gonna play more of the hack right now.

It does hold true to those words :P
Great stuff, as always. I haven't tried Too Many Doors yet, but I plan to.

If the switch disappears, you aren't doing it right ;) the switch disappears because the next room has a door-entry, instead of a pipe entry. You'll be able to bring the p-switch when you figure out the solution.

Thanks!! Good luck with it :D
Uh, I think I'll mark this as one to play at some point!

I'm game!
Please pardon the eye.
