Now that you mention this, I'd like to throw in my two cents.

Looking at any beta screenshot, you'll notice that big Mario looks different (from what we can tell, anyway). Well, I've just discovered something interesting: SMW's wall-running sprite. Why is Mario squished vertically and stretched horizontally? It almost looks like a Mario sprite from a game very similar to our own Super Mario World. Comparing the beta Mario (as much as we can) with the final SMW's wall-running Mario, we can look at the sprites from the 'similar game' we've mentioned earlier: Super Mario Land 2.

Super Mario Land 2's Mario is the beta Super Mario World Mario? The world may never know. =P

Yoshi Master: Based on this, I suggest you use slightly edited SML2 sprites for beta Mario. It may seem wacky to some people, but really, test it out. =o
Originally known as A Yoshi (2006-2009), Aquifer (2010-2011), and Azurik (2012-2014).
There is a few things I want to point out, I am not sure if I am right or not, but there appears to be different mario graphics in different beta screens. The top two are more like the modern SMW graphics but it appears that the rim of Mario's cap is red rather than black as the final version shows. The bottom row appears to be a different Mario. His rim of his cap is not as linear or straight, but shows a curve. It also appears that in his running and jumping animation, a bit of white under his mustache hints to me that he might have a smile or slight open mouth. His hat seems to have more shape and the emblem on it appears to be larger. Most clear on the raccoon mario on the right.

Also, none of the SMW final Mario animations match the swimming on the top left where his arm is so far back behind himself. On the bottom right where Mario is running, I must note that it's the opposite foot that is forward. In the final SMW sprite, mario's right foot is moving back. In the beta next to it, his right foot is the one that is forward, his left is the one going back.

I manipulated a few of these images to make them a bit more clear to see. I do not see any resemblance between SML2 mario and beta SMW mario.

Also, are we aware that Yoshi's beta name was Kibi/Lizardbuddie?

EDIT: I also should mention that Mario's shoes are red and his overalls are not as hitched up as the final SMW version.
RE-EDIT: im a music

Here is a clearer picture of what A_Yoshi is saying for people like me who are idiots. At left is the SML2 Mario, at right is SMW Mario, and in the center is SMW Mario's run-up-the-walls frame. The eyes are definitely the same. Since SML2 did come out after SMW, I would say it is likely that the SML2 is based on the SMW one. However, I still don't think the SML2 Mario was based strictly off of the SMW run-up walls version.

That being said, who knows? It's possible the run-up-walls frames are more beta, and weren't fully changed to reflect updates to the main sprite. However, they are intentionally squished to fit properly in frame, so I still think it's hard to make any strong case that SML2 Mario was based on anything specific other than SMW Mario in general.

@ Yoshi Master - Please call Yoshi Lizardbuddie in your hack. :)

[?] Miscellaneous Helpful Hints
If I moderated your hack, there was apparently a 90 percent chance it was rejected.

It seems like mario is smiling when he is running! o_0 And the sprites seem a bit different compared with the normal big mario.
Nothing to put here at the time being.
Thanks to Tom Servo for the awesome new layout!
I love this thread! Yes, I did mean SML2, I was on lunch and in a bit of a hurry when I typed my last message. Looking at beta big Mario, especially raccoon big Mario, editing Mario's sprite to make the brim of his hat and his shoes red would definitely be a step in the right direction. This hack is gonna be fantastic!
A little bit of info that might be useful (but probably not). Super Mario World's graphic designer was Shigefumi Hino. SMW was actually his first videogame to make designs for as well. He created Yoshi. It's entirely possible that SMW originally did not have him and a lot of the drastic difference in designs are because of when he was hired. By this I mean the cape, yoshi, the new goomba design, etc.

To see what other games he designed, go here; http://www.mariowiki.com/Shigefumi_Hino
@ A Yoshi: I see where you are going with the SMW Wall Running sprite and SML2 Mario, but I feel it is a coincidence. He was probably just based off of SMW regular Mario. Good speculation, however!

@ PuffyRynn: Yeah I always had in inkling that his sprite had changed over time, but have'nt been satisfied with any attempt at remaking him. Since the SNES Test ROM contained beta small Mario, but regular SMW Mario I have chosen to stick with it unless I can somehow get a satisfying Big Beta Mario. Think I should contact Shigefumi Hino as an innocent person who doesn't hack mario, and ask him some questions?

@ andy_k_250: I would definitely call Yoshi "Lizardbuddie" in my hack. Although, where has this been stated cause I would REALLY like to know.

Don't make me have to make the beta Mario for you... >:3

I doubt you would have success contacting him let alone him actually remembering. Even if he still works for Nintendo.

I might give his head/hat a try at least. Looks like his legs are stubby and his body is very round in the beta. I might be mistaken. I would not attempt it though unless I totally feel up to it.

EDIT: also the info about yoshi being called Kibi/Lizardbuddie was here http://nintendo.wikia.com/wiki/Super_Mario_World
Kibi was his beta english name, Lizardbuddie his japanese. Which is funny because Kibi sounds more japanese.
@PuffyRyn: Agreed, Kibi does sound more Japanese.

Also, I'm thinking this is coming along very well, Yoshi Master. Keep up the good work! :)

I think he should just keep Yoshi's name as it is. It's the name we all grew up with. But it's entirely his decision to rename yoshi or not. Also, I heard from somewhere that the release date for this was in june. Is that true, or am I going crazy waiting for this?
Not to speak for Yoshi Master, but all good things take time :) I'm thinking it's going to be well worth the wait no matter how long it takes! Personally, I'd rather he wait until he's gone as far as he wants to with it. I'm looking forward to playing it in it's entirety and enjoying all of the changes made.
Yeah, I guess I can wait.:) I't just looks so cool that it screams play me, pick up the controler and play me!! On a side note, this could be a great base hack for people who want to remake smb3 for smw, hence the mario & luigi racoon sprites. But I do hope that yoshi master finishes soon cuz it looks about done.:)
Well here's my answer to this. A release date causes more pressure than one can already have, that is why I never officially had one. There is that, but I also do my best when I feel potentially eager to hack, which can vary. Since school is going to be out I should be working on the hack almost every night. Since finishing the hack is MAINLY making more levels, it shouldn't be to far off. I just like thinking of the clever ways of incorporating new ideas into levels, as well as pondering new ideas such as the switch palaces and SMB3 beta levels. That, then testing, then polishing... and finally release!

er....what?
I really like how this is turning out Yoshi Master btw. ;D
Can't wait to check this out when it's finally released!
meh
I just noticed that the super mario land 2 head of mario is exactly like oneof the frames in smb3. Look at the picture very carefully and you'll see what I mean. Edit: There are also some recolored smb3 sprites that are unused in smw. Maybe they used a recolored and slightly edited smb3 mario sprite for the beta.
