Staff Spotlight - March 2016

Link Thread Closed
Welcome to the Super FX-powered staff spotlight interview. Today we have DiscoTheBat, who is one of our newest ASM section moderators.

Engage:
Sixcorby Hi, DiscoTheBat!
DiscoTheBat Hello, Sixcorby!
Sixcorby How are things today?
DiscoTheBat They are going really good
DiscoTheBat I'm working a bit on my projects, a hack and my patch.

Sixcorby You're one of our newest ASM sections moderators.
Sixcorby How's that job been for you so far?
DiscoTheBat It has been fun
DiscoTheBat I love to dig through the works of people and give them fair feedback when I am done
DiscoTheBat I believe that this is one of the natures of being a moderator.
Sixcorby Is there anything you've moderated that stands out to you?
DiscoTheBat Well, there is the SA-1 patch and the old Dyzen patch.
DiscoTheBat Moderating is not that difficult but you need to take care to not do something wrong and break things.
DiscoTheBat But for me, the SA-1 patch is what stood out for me.
Sixcorby shoutouts to vitor

Sixcorby How did you get into ASM in the first place?
DiscoTheBat Well, I used to be a Sonic hacker, before I even knew about SMWC.
DiscoTheBat I saw the disassemblies and worked for it
DiscoTheBat Because I used to be such a novice back then, the results were quite funny
DiscoTheBat Like, I broke the ground tiles, made Sonic die for every touch etc.
DiscoTheBat After leaving the scene and joining SMWC, I started working on ASM stuff
DiscoTheBat I found really satisfying to make SMW do stuff as I wished
DiscoTheBat Then so it grew my desire to learn ASM.
DiscoTheBat It took time and effort and I don't regret it. :)

Sixcorby Have you done any ASM-related things in any other SNES games?
DiscoTheBat Well, I tried working on a homebrew, Super Mario RPG and Super Punch-Out, one of my favorite games.
DiscoTheBat Currently, I am trying to get into Yoshi's Island hacking, because of my Super FX knowledge.

Sixcorby Your SuperFX patch seems to be what you've focused on for a while.
Sixcorby Tell me about it.
DiscoTheBat Well, the idea of the Super FX patch is to give to the average user a basis to work on their projects
DiscoTheBat Focusing not on speed as many may think but on the technicality
DiscoTheBat Super FX is a very unexplored terrain and while people may think that this chip's ASM is hard to learn, I can assure that with a bit of practice, can be even easier than SNES' ones.
Sixcorby Sounds great. Hopefully it opens some doors for hacking.

Sixcorby Do you have any other projects you're working on that you want to let others know about?
DiscoTheBat Well, I am working on a hack to show-case the abilities of the Super FX.
DiscoTheBat Many people feel it is unfeasible to have this chip (and have a reasonable amount of resources used) in a hack and I want to show it is not the case.
DiscoTheBat Also, I have a few projects going on for Sega CD and 32x and Game Boy Color.
DiscoTheBat Still crawling, as I am focusing on the Super FX one.

Sixcorby Do you have any plans for the future in SMW ROM hacking?
DiscoTheBat Well, I have planned a few tools for SMW ROM hacking, mostly Super FX related, to give help to novice users.
DiscoTheBat As well as the construction of a 3D system for the chip, so users can try to have a "3D" game, squeezing the max of the capabilities of the SNES.
Sixcorby sounds rad

Sixcorby Lastly, do you have any tips or words of wisdom for those trying to learn ASM?
DiscoTheBat I do.
DiscoTheBat Don't give up, ASM is an art, it takes a lot of time to master it, everyone starts low and everyone can stand among the people if they want
DiscoTheBat So if you love ASM but you find it too difficult, don't be afraid to ask questions, to read tutorials and so on.
DiscoTheBat Your knowledge worths gold, so don't waste it!
Sixcorby Good words.

Sixcorby That's it! Anything else you want to throw out there?
DiscoTheBat Yeah
DiscoTheBat I couldn't make here without my friends! They gave me strength when I needed it, and I am so grateful for them!
DiscoTheBat And for you people out there, don't ever give up on any of your projects!
DiscoTheBat Everyone has potential if they work for it! :D
Sixcorby <3
Sixcorby Was nice talking to you.
DiscoTheBat Likewise, it was fun <3

Parabéns Disco o/
Very glad to see you as month staff. Nice interview and I like some of those motivational words you said. Keep up the great work.
Congrats, Disco. You do a lot of hard work with your SuperFX stuff and I'm sure when you're finished with your hack you're going to blow all of our minds.
Thank you guys for the support, it took a long of time to reach where I am now and I couldn't have done without the support of my friends! #thp{=D}
DiscoTheBat is one of the best good surprises SMWC staff got on past years. Open minded, friendly, he currently is the most hardworking ASM staff member of SMW Central. Around 60% of all SMW ASM moderation work is from him, in whatever section. And not just does over 60% of all moderators. He does it pretty well-done. If I had another DiscoTheBat in the ASM sections, 90% of the time the waiting numbers on them would be zero.

I am pretty happy to have you as a SMW ASM moderator and you're more than deserved and underrated, the Staff Spotlight of March/April. I hope you stay here for many years. Keep up with the nice job.
