Nintendo Switch (aka NX)

Seems like the right time to make a thread about this.

For those who don't know what NX is, it is the codename for Nintendo's upcoming system.

Today, Nintendo is doing their annual investors meeting and briefing. So in this week we just might see what the NX really is.

Some of the more popular rumors are:
- It is more powerful than the PS4. At least the current PS4 model with all these rumors of a PS4.5 and whatnot.
- Smash 4 being ported. Might even be available as a launch title.
- Splatoon and Mario Maker being considered for porting, taking cross-platform compatibility into account might cause issues so they might not actually be ported.
- Will integrate achievements using My Nintendo accounts, rewarding players with platinum coins for clearing missions.
- x86 architecture, this will allow third parties have an easier time porting games to it, but it also might mean there won't be Wii U backwards compatibility.
- Final name being revealed this week at the shareholder's briefing.

There is a lot more speculation, rumors and whatnot out there. So don't take everything for granted.

So what do you want to see on a new Nintendo console? Did you think the Wii U had more to offer or was it right for Nintendo to make a new console a year too soon rather than the usual 5 year cycle?

edit: welp, NX confirmed march 2017, Zelda delayed that year too and also confirmed for NX.

sadly NX wont be shown at E3, but zelda will.

edit2: NX will get unveiled this year, just not at e3.

by the looks of it, zelda will be the ONLY playable game at nintendo's e3 this year. Besides color splash and tms#fe there does not seem to be any wii u game in sight... should we expect some more quick ports or shovelware like TPHD and mario tennis ultra smash?
Nintendo isn't doing too well with the Wii U. AFAIK we've had only two multiplatform games so far (Mass Effect 3 and Rayman Legends) not counting the online store. And if that different architecture thing is true, yeah, it'd probably be easier to port.

I can see Zelda U being ported, but not the others.

My region lock rumor: The NX will be region locked, but it will be optional, however, all of Nintendo's games will be region locked.
Let's milk Sunny Milk. Then she'll have enough money to fund Sunny Milk Real Estate.

Yay on NX coming March 2017, boo on (the Wii U version of) Zelda being delayed. It would have been enough to just delay the NX version in my opinion. Also boo on NX not being shown at E3, seems like this E3 might be just as boring as Nintendo's previous E3s then.

There were definitely more than that. Darksiders II, Batman: Arkham City (I think), Legend of Kay, One Piece: Unlimited World Red, a bunch of LEGO games and more. But yeah, having x86 architecture and power on par with the other consoles (NEO doesn't count for reasons I can't talk about) would certainly help portability.

So it's either Zelda, New! Super Paper Mario Bros. 2 or Super iM@S RPG eh

Let's hope Zelda U lives up to the hype then

I'm kind of upset that Zelda U got delayed again, but at least at E3 we might actually get a name for it.

I personally don't care about Zelda U, the only Wii U game I'm looking forward to is Color Splash. It's cool that the NX finally has a release date, but I still want to know more about the console, as does anyone else, before I make any judgements.

Yeah, because one (hopefully) great game clearly makes an overhyped annual event worth waiting for. Not to mention a game, that has already been announced two years ago.

That's really kind of sad that the Wii U apparently won't even have an original Zelda game, and I don't even like Zelda. On that note, I wonder if they'll announce anything new for the console at E3? I've bought one Wii U game for each year it's been out since launch...will 2016 break that streak? (I guess I might pick up Paper Mario: Color Splash at some point, but it's definitely not worth $60.) I do think the Wii U definitely had some holes in its library, particularly where RPGs are concerned (and the GamePad would have been so perfect for them...). Yet 4 games are still enough to beat out the console's compatitors, which is just pathetic.

As for the NX, I think it's still too early to get excited. Once they start showing some games for it, then we'll see, and I'm still not particularly confident. There's only one non-indie third-party company that I care about in the slightest in this day and age, and they haven't published on a Nintendo console since the SNES, so that pretty much limits my options on the NX to Mario, Yoshi, and Donkey Kong. I would eventually expect a Tropical Freeze sequel from Retro, but there is no guarantee of the Mario games on the NX being good. Also, I would say that at least the 2016 E3 can't be worse than the 2015 one...but yes, it totally can. If Yoshi's New Island taught me anything, it's not to assume that something can't be worse than its predecessor.

The Wii U is a weird console.

Let's face it, as a console, the Wii U is a pretty bad one. The account system is frustrating and makes buying digitally a terrifying prospect, the performance increase compared to PS3/360 is minimal at absolute best, the Gamepad is half-assed, and it and the games for it are still way, way too expensive.

Still, it none the less manages to have some of Nintendo's finest. Mario Kart 8, Splatoon, Super Mario 3D World, Super Mario Maker and Pikmin 3 are all excellent games, but that just showcases the problem further. Why the hell should I spend so much money on a separate console, have to figure out some way to cram it into my set up, just to play a handful of really good games? And then make space for the games since fuck buying that shit digitally.

It's going to be pretty likely that this ends up being Nintendo's last home console. I hope they go the way of SEGA in that regard and make the absolute craziest fucking console possible, with tons of crazy ideas that are either incredibly far ahead of their time or really stupid, impractical but still kinda cool ideas. If they end up going out of the console business, I hope they go out in a blaze of glory.

As for the NX itself, it's pretty insane that we're less than a year out and there won't be any information until after E3. That's a small window for a single game, never mind an entire console. (Or possibly two, even?) We know exactly nothing about it, not even the name. Which makes me all the more curious as to what the fuck they're planning.

The March release date makes me think that it's going to be at least somewhat of a handheld, but Zelda's coming out for it so there's clearly a home console component to it. Probably lends credit to the "It's both" speculation. Which is probably the only way that Nintendo could sell me on the purpose of their home consoles - Playing handheld games on the TV would be really nice. And if they end up giving enhancements to games when they're in console mode, that'd be really interesting as well. They've flirted with the concept before - Space Invaders on Game Boy did exactly that when plugged into the Super Game Boy.

Of course, the Super Game Boy usually got barely anything added in extra features, because there wasn't any reason for developers to funnel an intense amount of resources into a basically entirely different version of the game. That may not be entirely realistic as a result.

TL;DR: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

On the topic of the rumors, I think the rumor of x86 architecture is pretty interesting. I've mostly heard rumors of it being ARM-based rather than x86. The only way they'd really be able to do backwards compatibility if they change like this would be to straight up include the PPC CPU, maybe a second video card for Wii U mode as well. Emulation I'm certain wouldn't be feasible with the kind of power we'd get from the NX hardware, so yeah. I'd say it's pretty unlikely, but it's certainly possible considering launch PS3 units had the PS2 CPU in them as well.

As far as porting games if there's no backwards compatibility, I think it would be incredibly idiotic not to port Mario Maker, Splatoon, Smash, and Star Fox Zero. Nintendo put a lot of work into marketing these games; they wouldn't let that all go to waste (hopefully).

I'm with RPG Hacker tbh. Yeah Zelda U will be great and all but they really shouldve utilized E3 if they wanted to gain some serious hype for the NX. And considering the rest of the companies announced most of their new games last year (aside from the potential upgradeable consoles) I'm not expecting a very exciting contest this time around.

As for NX I really hope Nintendo gets their shit together with consoles. The casual market has moved on to mobile (and it looks like Nintendo finally realized that) and I'm pretty sure most people are done with forced gimmick controllers. Just make it powerful enough to outshine ps4 and xbone, get the digital storefront fixed up and have crossbuy for once, and start attracting the big third-party companies again.

Why do so many people wish for that? Sure, SEGA games are available on all consoles nowadays, but one thing people overlook is that most of them are total crap or, at best, mediocre. They make great games only rarely nowadays, when, back in their console days, most of their games had some kind of qualities to them. Unless you don't care about Nintendo games in general, I don't know why anyone would wish for that. I really don't want to see a Mario or a Zelda go the same way as a Sonic. Selling consoles kinda forces you to make good games, because you need to sell the games in order to sell the consoles. When you don't have to sell consoles, there is less pressure to sell the games and therefore it's easier to get away with mediocre games and games that just aren't ready at launch.

SEGA failed at making games because they were incredibly incompetent at doing so. Even in the Saturn/Dreamcast era the cracks were starting to show. I trust that Nintendo will actually put out good games.

One could argue that that was only BECAUSE they were in such a desperate situation, though.

I don't think Nintendo's as fucked as SEGA. They're still doing well and have sectors that are viable. As long as they don't go completely in the red like SEGA they'll still be able to put out good games.

Yeah, Nintendo's doing fine as far as I can tell. Not to change the topic, but is SEGA even doing anything now?

You know, thinking about this, there is a way this E3 (in regards to Nintendo) could still jump from "horrible" to "pretty okay", and the solution is actually quite simple. In fact, all they have to do is to make sure that the new Zelda game becomes the god-damn best Zelda game in the entire series so far, so much, that even just the trailer will blow our minds more than the trailer of Twilight Princess at E3 2006 (which would already be a problem without audience reactions). Easy, right? They can't possibly mess this up!

This year's E3 can't be worse than 2008 or last year's. The fact that we are FINALLY getting some info on Zelda U already tops both conferences. Plus they might show some more Pokemon Sun/Moon stuff unless there is a Direct for it in japan or they drop everything in Corocoro besides the Box legends. I'm sure they'll announce some Wii U games, more HD remakes if anything, for holiday season.

Let's not forget Pikmin 4 was confirmed in an interview by Miyamoto, being near completion. But like Zelda, it may be pushed to NX, too. Then again, he never did mention what system it was for, hell it could even be for mobile.

Anyway, some more rumors popped up recently:

Retro Studios making an NX game, not Metroid nor Donkey Kong. May be new IP.

And Koei Tecmo confirmed they are making an NX game. Hyrule Warriors port or another something else?

edit:
I wonder how Nintendo only having 1 playable game will affect E3 itself. I saw some people cancel their flight to LA because of this.
EA, Activision and Disney are not gonna be there anymore. Maybe this really is the last E3 we'll get. I guess Nintendo fans have nothing to worry about since theres always Nintendo Direct, anyway. Some of them alone have been more exciting than E3 2015 but that isn't a huge feat to achieve anyway.
I honestly don't care what it is as long as: A: It doesn't have a gimmicky screen controller, and B: It has some good launch titles, and ports Splatoon, Mario maker, and Super Mario 3D world. Other than that,

I have the best crocker-spaniel

Why would you even want to play Super Mario Maker without a "gimmicky" screen controller?

Seriously. Controlling the game with a regular controller would be like playing a piano with a steering wheel.
