Nintendo Switch (aka NX)

So, can the Wii U actually run any engine that the other consoles can, or not? If all its engines are exclusive, I honestly don't blame third party companies for giving it a miss in that case. Would explain why there's been only three large-scale multiplatform games on the system so far...

It can run Unity Engine, Unreal Engine 3 and (I believe) Game Maker. Probably some other engines as well. No Unreal Engine 4, though.
Feel free to visit my website/blog - it's updated rarely, but it looks pretty cool!

So this could mean porting will be a thing? Will it be done with ease or (just changing the controller input and graphics) will it take months before it's eventally finished?
Was still talking about the Wii U there, not the NX (not sure if that was clear). Don't know which engines the NX will support yet.

As for the Wii U, I can't say how much work it is to port a Unity or Unreal Engine game to the Wii U since I've never used those engines for console games (only used them for PC development). We use our own engine at work. I certainly expect it to be more than just a few weeks worth of work, though. All of the consoles currently out there are just way too different to make porting games such an easy task, especially in terms of raw power, but also just in the way you handle a lot of things. Ideally, a game engine should do as many of the console-specific tasks for you as possible, but having personal experience with how some of those consoles work, I just can't imagine Unreal Engine or Unity doing everything for you. Some of the requirements are just way too game-specific. In any case, porting a game to another console is pretty much never just a click of a button, unless you have a very simple and restricted game engine (such as RPG Maker, for example).

Double post, because I have some interesting new rumor:

That German website owner/forum owner I already mentioned a while ago posted some new information on what he has heard about NX. He claims that his source is very trustworthy and somehow related to Nintendo of Europe. Now of course I can't verify this, but as already mentioned I know him quite well and consider him quite trustworthy and responsible, so I don't expect him to post any information that doesn't at least have some truth to it.

The rumor basically states this: Nintendo is already going to reveal the NX in a new Nintendo Direct quite soon. In fact: They're going to reveal the NX this Tuesday already, September 6th at 16 pm CET. They're not going to announce the Direct, however. Basically, their plan is to surprise everyone by just releasing the Nintendo Direct without any announcement. I suppose the general idea is that they just upload it to YouTube at that time and then post links all over their social channels, but that's just a guess.

In any case, planning to make the NX Direct a complete surprise sounds so ridiculously stupid that I can definitely see Nintendo doing something like that, and that's why I actually consider the rumor quite credible. In fact, I totally expect them to do this now. Nevertheless, a rumor is a rumor, so take it as that. Just don't be disappointed if the NX reveal doesn't turn out to be this Tuesday.

Not being rude, but if it turns out to be true. You completely ruined the surprise

Edit:This is just a joke :D
Wubba lubba dub dub.
That's probably your own fault for reading something that is literally prefaced with "this is a new rumor:".

final rumor post by emily rogers

noisy cooling??? I can't imagine a handheld having any moving parts. That's just asking for a high failure rate. Maybe it is the dock, I dunno.

Honestly I don't mind the date being leaked. The real surprise here will be launch lineup, the hardware and software features and hell, everything really. All we know are rumors, nothing is certain until it is actually revealed.

That's ok, being a Nintendo fan, I'm used to being disappointed.
Actually they posted a blurry image of what they claim is a screenshot from the Direct with a guy holding some kind of controller in his hand today and... I don't know, this really smells fishy now. While I do still consider that website owner reliable and trustworthy, I do have this fear that they're just playing an elaborate prank here and on Tuesday they're going to release a new video where it turns out that it was just someone from their team on that blurry image. So yeah, that image actually took away from the credibility as far as I'm concerned, but meh. I'll just wait until Tuesday and see for myself. If an NX Direct does happen to be that day, then cool, if not, I guess I'll just visit that guy's office and take a big dump in front of his chair.

EDIT:
Yeah, pretty much safe to expect this to be just a prank now. Kinda disappointing for them to resort to methods like these. I mean I guess "it's just a prank" and "do you have no sense of humor", but really, people doing stuff like this should know that people will be disappointed and take it personal.

Also there is an animal crossing direct coming, i doubt they make directs in the row.

My MSI laptop's fan's really loud. Then again, I bought it to play ARK, which I have 3 hours on... Then again, my old HP desktop won't run Portal 2 for what I can only assume is a corrupt audio driver...

With the engine support, it's worth pointing out that few developers use custom engines anymore. So the more engine support, the more third party support.

Everypony's digging with a shovel

Guess it wasn't true then. XD
Everyone needs to just relax with the rumors though. People are getting excited/upset over nothing. Just wait until Nintendo gives the official word, until then, probably best to stop believing everything you hear on the internet. #smw{^_^;}

True that. It's just that the wait is killing us! I mean, this thing has been announced almost 1 1/2 years ago! Come on, Nintendo, hurry up already!

I've read the same thing, except the article I read didn't mention anywhere that Nintendo was giving out the consoles. Maybe they're completely unrelated to this giveaway.

It's been 2 weeks since the last post so I guess it's time I should bump with semi-relevant info and a bunch of other >rumors for the sake of discussion

Nintendo of Europe twitter.

They also said they would give it away in a t-shirt design contest of sorts, also ending in March.

Anyway...

- Emily Rogers teased an october reveal the other week.
- Pokemon CEO confirms that they will indeed make games for the NX. Mr. Ishihara also stated that "The NX is trying to change the concept of what it means to be a home console device or a hand-held device". Hinting at it supposedly being a handheld/console hybrid?
- Some indie devs seem to be signing NDAs. Seems like Nintendo is already signing off indie devs with a devkit or at least the SDK.
- Ubisoft CEO says the NX is "fantastic".

Also, relevant.

hang in there bros we will get a reveal date soon enough now that its fall!
Eh, to be honest, I think I've been sitting around the NintendoNX subreddit a little too much, and when you do that, you eventually start expecting every day to be an NX surprise reveal day (and therefore being disappointed every day). I think I need to distance myself from the whole NX thing for a bit until they finally DO announce a reveal date. Still hoping for late September or early October, but who knows. At this point, everything goes for Nintendo. You know them as well as I do.
