VLDC9 Results - Judge comments added

and really, congrats to all four, but tbh SNN and NGB got snubbed hard by a small margin.

Well, I don't particularly care too much about my own score, but like I said, I am rather surprised by ninja boy's overall results. The other three judges had relatively consistent scores (with each other), but ninja boy's ratings are all over the place. I'm hoping the comments will shed some light as to why this might be.

I also have to ask: did the judges actually discuss their final scores prior to posting them? Myself, Eternity, and MrDeePay came to a consensus on the top three from the 8th VLDC together on IRC before the results were finalized (those are the most important ones, and the ones people are most likely to get up in arms about).

Not trying to belittle anyone or shoot down the contest, just stating some observations from my own experience of having done this countless times in the past.

I've talked with TRS about this but tbh, and not meaning to invalidate the scores, ImpeTRS, Agent Q, and Magiluigi shouldn't really be that high since all three are just beautiful but safe levels. Kinda weird that after the little spat with Sokoban that in the end the safer levels scored higher than the more creative levels. TRS at least feels the same (about snn and it being weird), and really, congrats to all four, but tbh SNN and NGB got snubbed hard by a small margin.

Someone just described my feelings about this VLDC...
Not to be offensive but I don't know what some of these judges' basis on creativity was. Koopster (especially this guy, kudos) and Eternity seemed to do agreeable for the most part, but there were some crazy things going on that I have probably mentioned a billion times already. It's like, "This level kind of ticked me off and I was in a bad mood, so I'll just give a 2 for aesthetics or a 2 for creativity"

Honestly makes me want Frost to be a judge next year, I've mostly agreed with what was there other than excessive profanity but that's someguy's influence for you.

That argument with Sokoban, oh man :/

Also creativity in aesthetics is BS, just making fun of my no YY-CHR .-.

Is making a level with a darkness gimmick really that safe? I mean, its a pretty risky gimmick. (and amazingly the level didn't score lower for p-switches either, I assume we pulled something off well)

Regardless, I'm surprised the space level didn't get first place, even I'd say that brought a little more to the table. But I'm flattered we did so well.
oh now i'm in 68th/111th
these judges are baked yo

RIP 45th place
103rd place wasn't cool, I'm so disappointed.
Who is your favourite player?

I'm pleased with my result, 44th place. It was vastly better than my first entry. Next year I'll try and whip up something really creative and interesting. Congratulations to all the winners!
I happy with 36th :3 And well done to all the winners

Also looking forward for the comments!
EDIT:
Woo 36 place club!
36th place thank you(-ㅅ-;;)
36 club! Yayo.

I think most people got 36th place. Or 79th place. We have big ties!

Maybe I should photoshop a mario hat on that photo.
Not bad as 79th.
I'm satisfied with this result.
I am yoshi9429 enjoying Lunar Magic and Touhou Danmakufu ph3 and RPG Maker MV.
lol OK @ ninja boy's comments on my level.

can i ask you to please elaborate on why you gave it a 37? because the current comment really doesn't tell me anything in the slightest
There's just my nick and nothing else in Nimono's judging file. pls fix
@Ninja Boy
streches vanilla too much/60
I guess I can take this as a compliment #tb{:p}

Edit: this may be a little misleading for those who just read the forum post and not the actual judging comments.
As far as I can tell the streching vanilla thing is just meant for the asthetics, where I still got 10/10.
But I'd like to know, what actually pulled down my design rating by that much.
I don't want to discredit ninja boy, it's not easy to judge that many levels, but a reason for any point deduction of more than 5 points would be nice.
And 12 points...is actually quite a bit more than 5.
End of edit.

@Nimono
those plattforms raise again when you jump, I thought that was clear.
But I can understand the deduction #tb{;)}

Overall this year judging seems to be fine, while I definitly have to say, that there are some decisions I have a hard time to understand.

Thanks for adding the files.

@Ninjaboy,

Not to contribute to all the comments already, but
You said that the cake at the end of the level was questionable in its use of vanilla resources. I promise that everything in the level, including the cake, is vanilla, and I can specifically show what gfx files I used. Not that this changes anything, I just wanted to point out that it is in fact vanilla, and it's wrong to assume that it's not just because it looks non-vanilla.

WOW. He used an older version of my scoring, where I accidentally the scoring for yours. Wow.

@ninjaboy

I'm generally good sport about the judging but 2/10 on aesthetics really bothers me. There wasn't any elaboration on it from the comments so it still bugs me. Does having rather simple but clean smw style visuals make it a 2/10 somehow? When Blue Leaf used nearly the exact same tileset and got a 7/10? There seems to be some inconsistencies on the ways things are judged when looking at other entries. Unless there's more to it than that, I'd still like some explanation so I can understand.

Should be thrown out if his intention was to rank low.

His level wasn't bad, it just lost a lot of points due to being late and using some ASM. Might be worth considering that some of these 0s are actually/might be changed to DQs, though.

Honestly, having been discouraged by the amount of bad levels that were kept in 8, I support trimming down the levels for 9.
But then again, that's me talking from a player perspective and not a contest perspective.
I really need a layout. :<
@ninja boy
Did you rate my level half lower than others just because you couldn't find dragon-coins 1st try? Only one of them is kinda hidden(and its location is pretty obvious), plus you do have plenty of time regardless of the gimmick(which also was pointed out by other judges) so I really dont get your comment.

Okay, now that I see that the judges' comments have been added...

Uhhh... how do I get the last dragon coin without glitching through the turn blocks?

Hit the blue P-switch (found in the turn block above the Yoshi coin) so that the coin under the arch ledge down there turns into a block, and then the Chuck there should eventually bump into that block and jump up onto the arch ledge (usually). From there, it should be simple to get him to charge through the turn blocks that are in your way. (If that puzzle gets screwed up somehow, just enter one of the nearby bonus room pipes to reset the setup.)

The puzzle for the Key seems to be messed up- I never got the Koopa to kick the block back, it always killed it before it could, though the P-Switch you offer at the start after reaching the outside allows one to bypass the puzzle, so it's still possible.

Yeah, as I alluded to with the message at the start of the gray cave section, the blue Koopas don't always catch the kicked ice blocks (which seems to be a glitch regarding one of the patches to the Base ROM, I think). So, using a silver P-switch to reach the key is actually the primary intended solution. (However, if you're somehow able to get that blue Koopa to catch an ice block and open up the key block for you that way, then more power to you!)

This was an interesting level with the messages but I'm not sure how I feel about using more than 2 it does encroach on other levels.

I asked about this in the discussion thread before going through with it, and no one objected to me using more than 2 messages, and I think a few people even said that I could use their message slots since they didn't have any messages themselves.
