Why is K-on so popular

So I see people all over the internet with Avatars with characters from K-on (looking at you K3fka), and K-on stuff is all over the place. In the /c forum on 4chan (anime cute) there are even annual threads dedicated to Mugi.

So what exactly makes K-on so popular? It just seems overrated to me.
Because K-On! is great. The characters are cute and funny, and while often put in mundane situations, the interactions and responses of the characters lead to humor.

So yeah, you should just watch it.

Also Mugi's eyebrows

Is there really much of a plot? I'm open to checking it out one day, but it's nowhere near my top priority when it comes to what anime I watch.
People like to say K-On! has no plot, and yeah, it's a slice-of-life show that is paced pretty slowly. But the characters definitely do grow and develop over time if you actually pay attention. Don't watch it expecting some masterpiece story full of twists and turns; it's about high school girls growing up and experiencing playing in a music club together.

Seems beyond generic to me, but I'll consider checking it out. There are other shows I plan on getting to first though.
K-On! Has plot. Azunyan might be the worst character in the show but she's not actually horrible. I don't regret watching K-On!. If you end up watching it I'd recommend going the full way and watching the movie.

btw mugi is a top-tier k-on

Like I said, I'm considering it, and I probably will. It just doesn't look like something that would appeal to me, and I like slice of life shows.

Just be prepared, the end made many people cry. I know what I'm talking about ;-;

I actually never understood it. Basicly nothing happens in K-on, from my view... I think I'm just not a slice of life person.

Google K-on! Panties and check out the images if you want to know why its so popular. I won't post or link to it because it may be semi-NSFW and I don't want to be banned for good.. Like K¶fka said, it's a slice of life show about a teenage girls band. Might sound dull, but it has a quaint, familiar quality that makes it enjoyable. Oh, and the ladies are intoxicatingly attractive.
I love it so much now that Mio's infamous pose is my wallpaper and I have a strong desire to enter the show and turn it into a harem anime. Screw aj's warning, having more than one waifu is the real laifu.#w{<3}

Damn straight! #w{=P}

I'm still gonna check K-on! out at some point, but I'm not really expecting much.
It's got next to no plot, but that's actually what I like about it.

I don't get why people obsess over it as much as they do, mind you, but that peaceful atmosphere is probably what plays the largest role. (And the art style's quite appealing, too.)

K-ON is the largest anime torrent I have, 17GB.

Might as well make the best of it and watch it. K3fka's right, it's slow-paced.

Well, K-ON is not the best slice of life or music anime, but it's definitely a good example of these genres. Personally, I enjoyed so much the anime, it was very funny and exciting.
And the reason because it's popular is for waifus.
