9th VLDC: OW Contest - Rules and Discussions (deadline extension)

Link Thread Closed
Well well well, guess I kept you waiting long enough. It's time, once again, to start the annual OW contest for the VLDC collab hack. As usual, you get a list of maps and levels to put into these maps.
You can also download the ROM with all the levels inserted here if you wanna look up the level that go on a certain map or something. You have (more or less) free reign over what you want to do and how you design those maps.
However, there is one big difference to the previous years. Unlike usual, we are not gonna have people vote for one entire map, but for individual maps (the main and the different submaps). So you are not required to submit a full OW, but can also just submit one of them. We will then have the userbase select their favourite maps individually from all submissions and then put together the whole map from there.
Trophies will also be handed out to the individual submissions.

However, with this, there also come new restrictions. Not much though.
Usually, we allow all sorts of ASM you can think of for this, this time around, you are limited to things that can be used on a per OW basis and don't influence the game mechanics in a way, that would make it different from the other maps (eg the wide-screen OW patch).
Also, of course, all the ASM used should be SA-1 compatible. So you are to use an SA-1 ROM for your submission.

To sum things up, these are the rules:
  • You are to follow the list provided below on how to organize the maps and levels per map. You do not have to set the level numbers for the tiles (as some require an extansion patch that is still being worked on). You may set them on your (and include a readme for the levels 025-049) if you want them in a specific order/location.
  • You are to use an SA-1 ROM for your submission
  • You can use any SA-1 compatible ASM you want UNDER THE CONDITION that it doesn't change the game mechanics per map in a way that would cause conflicts with other maps when the OW is being put together (example: widescreen OW, faster walking, etc.)
  • DO NOT USE Windowing (in ASM code) or any Layer 3 (never mind)
  • You can use ExGFX from ExGFX200.bin onwards, limit, 30 files.
While you are free to do whatever you want, I strongly recomend you stick with a vanilla like design. For it could seriously class with other maps when the collab OW is put together otherwise. (I guess people don't get what I meant, so just do whatever)
  • DO NOT edit the OW border on any submap or work with border related ASM in ANY WAY. We'll adjust the border ourselves later for the rank and creater and whatnot
    • NEW The final border will be black, so it is OK to replace the left and right part of the border with windowing in case you want to use scrolling layer 3 or similiar effects.
  • DO NOT use path revealing events. This also means you can use the top 4 rows of the palette
  • Add a hub, from which you can reach all the worlds via pipe, star or directly connected
    • DO NOT use exit tiles (the red paths) for entering any maps from the hub
    • Add a "Yoshi's House" type of level to the hub (104)
    • At the end of each submap, add a star/pipe that brings the player back to the hub
  • Deadline is Sunday the 12th of June 23:59:59 EST.
  • Submit your entry as a patch (together with potential readmes, ASM and whatever you used) to me as a PM

Those themes look interesting to work with, I'll check what to do since my OW skills aren't the best

Also nice, more levels ASM hax, hoping you release that.
if only i wasn't diarrhea at making overworlds
Is the fact that swith palaces are not listed intended?
Eh, I'll give it a shot. I'll work mainly on the Forest world.
I play forum games and draw furries. I'm mostly active on Discord and Twitter.

4 judges = 4 switch palaces?

Maybe that's the reason why it's not listed.

Also yeah, I like the different worlds and I'm happy the Resort World is a thing now ^^
I remember participating in this last year. My overworld was total garbage. I'm definitely not participating this year. Anyway, I hope we get some great overworlds this year.

Always go for the extra touch
ft: well, that level is called "Streamside". I really hope y'all put it next to a river or something.
Time to whip out the guides.
It's not an actual forest or even an environmental place, Koopster, it's basically an IRC chatroom, if you've ever seen that before. I'd suggest moving that into the Abstract or Space world instead.

Also, another thing I found weird: A Portal-based factory in a cave? I'm guessing you guys didn't have any better ideas?

What does an IRC chat room have to do with space?

IRC chatrooms were only invented after Sputnik got into space.

Also I'd like to comment on the overworld stuff. I'm fine with a lot of it, but some stuff is just overly odd:

1. Prizm's level is mountain
2. SokobanSolver...?? I don't recall if Hogwarts was surrounded by forests. Even then, forests on a mountain.
3. Medic, obviously
4. Leiras could be used as space due to the high amount of mountain levels already.
5. lolyoshi is not grassland, but whatever
6. Same with sockbat replica
7. Christian07 can easily be moved to cave, which is already missing a few levels

I don't remember much else about the levels.

Yeah, it is kinda weird that it's there. It would make more sense in the best world.

And you think I haven't played that level before, FP? Alright then.

Not 100% of the levels are perfectly suited to their respective worlds due to the balancing of levels per world that had to be done, and the Abstract world was one example of world that had way too many levels for a submap. (I was certain the cave had nine though?)

Also, keep in mind that levels like Hogwarts are castles with no outside segments and can work basically anywhere. lolyoshi's level is surrounded by grasslands though, like, did you expect there to be a ruins world just for him or what? Think outside the box a little, guys.

Aperture Lab I was told should be in a cave because it works with the game it makes a ref to, but I don't know myself.

I also don't see how Leiras's level is not a mountain, we can see stars from earth too ?_? EDIT: actually now that I read your post correctly, it wouldn't make sense to swap worlds since space also does have 10 levels, and as it's a submap it's preferable it has as few of them as possible.

Cave Johnson, obviously #w{:s}
