Originally posted by Final TheoryI had a hard time placing objects in the levels. I didn't like the whole swirl the item thing to change it. To me thats just stupid. Half the time I couldnt even swirl the block or enemy or whatever to even make it change. And scrolling and navigating through the level seemed awkward too.
It's a quick shaking motion, not a swirl, which is probably why you had difficulty pulling it off.
Originally posted by Final TheoryWhen I tried to erase stuff there was the dog, but the dog was only an undo and not an eraser tool. I couldnt find out how to erase just a specific block if i wanted to.
Dog is just undo. There's an eraser tool on the right side of the HUD (he's an eraser...) There are copy and multi-grab tools as well (using the shoulder buttons) that make life easier too.

I'm willing to say that i like fusoya's lunar magic better.
As someone who has spent a significant time of both editors, I can say that they each have their strengths and weaknesses. I'm not sure if I could say which is better than the other as they both try to do very different things. Lunar Magic's goal was to let you do absolutely whatever you wanted within the SNES's capabilities. SMM on the other hand is focused on creating a cohesive hub for custom Mario stages, something easy for most people to just pick up and play.
For example, designing in Lunar Magic I was held back by sprite limitations (i.e. slowdown) and tileset specific items. These do not exist in SMM, but SMM has its own set of limitations such as limited level size/number of blocks and only allowing for one sub-world per stage. I also miss the custom overworld and the ability to create a single self-contained Mario game, but I think the social media-esque nature of posting levels and getting easy feedback through comments and death locations in SMM is excellent. There's a lot you can do in SMM that you couldn't in Lunar Magic, and vice versa.
And yeah, don't expect a perfectly faithful representation of the older Mario series. Mario's physics in SMM are a sort of hybrid between the four games it covers, so that Mario plays consistently between each mode. Unfortunately since Super Mario World was so unique, this makes the SMW skin probably the least accurate to the original. I'd prefer if they had kept the physics more faithful but I can understand the design choice.
