SMG4: Escape from the Dark World! (Project Retarded64)

Standard

Hello, my name is GhibliGuy9000.
I'm proud to announce to you all on SMW Central, my upcoming hack.
Ladies and gentleman, I present to you,
"SMG4: The Retarded Adventure in Hell!", now called "SMG4: Escape from the Dark World!"
It is a hack of the original SMW made by, you guessed it, me. And yes, SMG4 is the reason why I'm currently making this. Now I'm gonna tell you the plot.

SPOILER ALERT!!!
-
SMG4 (Mario) and Starman3 (Luigi) is trapped in the Underworld by The Devil (It's actually Bowser, but pretend it's the Devil...).
So they must find a way out of the Underworld so they can be home in the faithful Mushroom Kingdom.
Along the way, they must go through many obstacle courses that are hard to go through.
And yes, the hack is gonna be VERY HARD!!!

Clever plot, huh?
Reply if you like (or dislike) the idea of an SMG4 hack starring SMG4.

NEWS:
(6/14/2016) Beta v0.1 has been released! World 1 (Yoshi's Island) is the only world completely edited world in this beta.

(6/24/2016) The title has been changed to SMG4: Escape from the Dark World.
The reason why the title has been changed was because my 17-year old brother and some users who replied said that some people would get offended by putting the words "retarded" or "Hell" in the title. My brother and the users were right, what was I thinking?! That title isn't even funny or clever at all! I'm even offended by the title! So I changed it to "SMG4: Escape from the Dark World!" so nobody will find the title offensive.

Also, just as a little tip...you may want to consider changing the title a bit. Some may be offended by the use of "Retarded."

NOTE: Beta v0.2 will be released later this June or during the beginning of July. Along with the hack will be some images of cover art of the game if it were made on an SNES reproduction cartridge, both the North American and Japanese version.
The Super Famicom version is called "SMG4: Escape from the Underworld! (SMG4:アンダーワールドからの脱出!)"

BETA v0.2 SPOILERS:
Some designs have been changed, such as the SMG4 and Starman3 sprites, instead of being in SMW style, the sprites are now SMB3 style. Even the switch in all the switch palaces have been changed to a different kind of switch palace sprites. Some of the level backgrounds have been changed. One of the levels in Donut Plains resembles Geometry Dash or The Impossible Game except the scroll speed is at medium speed, if it was at fast speed, the level would be extremely hard, I'm dead serious, if it was put at fast speed, you would die and die and die because also in that level, there are no checkpoints. Things in the level you have to avoid are lava, black piranha plants and bullet bill cannons. The Donut Plains levels will be completely edited along with the Yoshi's Island levels in the beta except for the other worlds, which will be in other betas that are coming soon after this one.

Here is the cover art for the game if it was on an SNES or SFC reproduction cartridge:

Huh. Personally I'm also a big fan of SMG4, and this hack seems interesting. But, if you are going have a hack thread, it would be great to provide pictures so people can see what the hack is like. I have not played the demo as of now, but I'm interested to see where this is going.

Overall, interesting idea, but it would be great to have pictures.

edit: Also, you can not submit or post links to a ROM. Make it an IPS file.

There is a glitch that happens when you finish Yoshi's Island 1, so go to the Yellow Switch Palace and beat the stage, and
then save your data, and reset the game, go to your save file, and the glitch will be gone.

Or you could click 'uninstall title moves recording ASM' in the OW editor.
In terms of design, the switch palace is exactly the same as SMW, except for adding a message box. I could not tell you how many hacks I've seen do this.
Level 3 is a YI3 blatant edit, and now that I beat the switch palace, it's just run across the bottom on the switch blocks for most of the stage.
The penultimate level reminded me of the world 4 airship in SMB3, and not in a good way. The auto-scrolling felt a bit too slow for the easiness. I often found myself going to the end of the screen, then fast-forwarding until the screen caught up with me. Either setting the scroll speed to medium, increasing the amount of activity in the level, or shortening the level would make it feel less tedious.
The castle is just an empty run through of repetitive, evenly spaced jumps, and the ground needs proper edge tiles so it doesn't look cutoff.

Maybe Bowser actually is the devil. Or if Peach was the devil that would be quite the plot twist for Mario.

Played the demo, there are some problems with this hack I have to address:

Add some variety with the enemies(The majority of enemies I saw in yoshi's Island 1,2,3 and 4 were red koopas)
It seems like you started out with a great variety of enemies, then you just stopped using them.
If you want to make the level harder, add more threatening enemies( Any kind of Chuck, Banzai bills, Green bouncing parakoopas, Volcano lotuses etc.)
There is also flat areas with barely any enemies in sight(A great example would be right after the midpoint in yoshi's island 1,add some pipes to make the level less flat) and what's the point of the vines it doesn't give you any challenge there's no enemies to dodge, it also creates a lot of cutoff.

Yoshi's island 3 has these rope platforms which causes cutoff, you should just replace them with cement blocks.

Yoshi's Island 4 has repetitive level design, it's only platform, koopa, platform, koopa(Add red parakoopas to make it feel diffrent, more varied and make it so you use diffrent types of koopas and not just the red ones) or you can put bullet bill shooters in the level to make it feel less boring). Also advised to put Medium scroll instead of the slow scroll and making the level shorter in length.

The Castle level is just terrible(Cutoff, bad palette and boring level design)

Change it to something like this.

Also the palette in yoshi's island 1,2,3 and 4 are kinda ugly, make the background darker and the foreground replace the black with red and the red with black.
Something like this:

Though, that's not the best example. It will give you a great idea what you should change.

Read the F.A.Q and don't sumbit SMC Files, make an ips patch with Floating IPS(You can find in the tools section)
I knew you were gonna think it looks like crap. I kinda think that I did a crappy job doing this. The reason why it looks like crap is because this is just my first attempt at a hack and I'm only 15 years old. I'm only a beginner at doing SMW hacks. Don't be too harsh on it. I know you're dead serious about this being one of the worst, if not the worst SMW hack you've ever played in your entire life. I'm very, very sorry about all these flaws, I'll probably do better next time. Or maybe not, which would mean I would cancel the whole project once and for all.

So when is an appropriate time to be harsh? The 2nd, 3rd, or 4th hack? If you don't learn now how to polish, you'll have to sometime if you want to submit anything or make anything people will have fun playing. I don't think people were "too harsh." A lot of what they said was more objective stuff that's not too hard to fix.
I think people are under the impression that if someone posts a thread here, they're looking for feedback in hopes of submitting it to the hacks section.

I don't see what age has to do with anything. Only the first clause is relevant. First hacks in general often suck.

As Sokobansolver said above, take the criticism when you get it. It's not meant as a personal attack—it's meant to help you improve. Neither experience (or a lack thereof), nor age exempt you from criticism. Everybody starts off being god awful at this. And every single one of the "veterans" here makes a mistake every once in awhile. You can always take a little critique.

And furthermore: many users at this site (including myself) started romhacking at ages younger than you. Now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure we had a user awhile back that was actually around eight years old when they joined.

Edit: Also, just as a little tip...you may want to consider changing the title a bit. Some may be offended by the use of "Retarded."

Don't feel too bad about it, like everyone else said, it's just to help you improve. You will get better at it with enough practice. Heck, my first time hacking, it took me 5 hours to create a one path on the overworld, and it was awful. But I digress, just play some other hacks on the site and find inspiration from them, and draw that inspiration to your hack.
The reason why I put the word "Retarded" in the title is because there's a series of SMG4 videos called "Retarded64".

If you need help with level design, palettes, etc. you can ask here or play a few other hacks hosted here and read some hack removal logs to get an idea of what passes and what doesn't.

I don't think you should worry about it too much, about being a newbie. Everyone has to start somewhere at some point.
End of this message.
