Pandora's Box: The Most Aesthetically Pleasing Kaizo Hack Ever, JRPG Graphics Rips, and More!

EDIT: I just noticed my thread got featured on the SMWC Facebook page. Thank you, but I just want to make something clear. I'm not gonna be using any of the rips I showed off (Except maybe the Black Omen and CT Moon rip) in Pandora's Box. I think people got the wrong impression, sorry for the miscommunication.

Welcome one and all to my C3 booth.

Do I finally have the pleasure of fitting you for one of me coffins today?

Feels good to be participating in the C3 again since I missed the last two. Without further ado, let's jump right into it!

And it only took me ten months to get this demo out. #w{xD}

(S) = Sampled

The soundtrack has a total of 62 tracks. 62! That's a lot for a hack, not to mention a kaizo hack for that matter. I actually didn't include five other tracks, but they're not that important and I'm lazy.

You may notice that tracks 46 and 53 are missing. This is because those two tracks haven't been ported yet. If you'd like to know what songs those tracks will be, here they are:
46: Touhou 8 IN - Voyage 1970 (S)
53: Touhou 14 DDC - The Shining Needle Castle Sinking in the Air (S)

Here are the tracks that I requested people to port:
00: Chrono Trigger - Mystery of the Past (S) (Ported by tcdw)
08: Chrono Trigger - Ruined World (S) (Ported by gibbl)
30: Final Fantasy VI - The Fierce Battle (S) (Ported by Masterlink)
38: Touhou 15 LoLK - A World of Nightmares Never Seen Before (S) (Ported by gibbl)
39: Earthbound - Threed, Zombie Central (S) (Ported by tcdw)
43: Touhou 8 IN - Voyage 1969 (S) (Ported by Moose)
44: Touhou 6 EoSD - The Young Descendant of Tepes (S) (Ported by gibbl)
45: Chrono Trigger - Last Battle (S) (Ported by gibbl)
47: Chrono Trigger - To Far Away Times (S) (Ported by gibbl)

I'd just like to give a big thanks to everyone who made ports for this project, you have no idea how much I appreciate it.

Sidenote: Track 38 is still kind of a WIP, but gibbl is taking a break from porting, so if you'd like to help fix the port, PM me.

So remember those rips I teased you guys with awhile back? Well here they are, and I have more than I showed off.

Something I should mention before I do though: I hadn't ripped anything in over a year, so I was unaware that a .palmask file was a requirement for submitting graphics. None of these graphics have a .palmask file yet. Once I get around to it, I'll add them and submit these to the graphics section.

I'll start with the stuff that I showed off.

Chrono Trigger - Prehistoric Mountains

Download: here
Notes: Why are there not more rips from Chrono Trigger? Seriously.

Seiken Densetsu 3 - Opening Cutscene

Download: Here
Notes: As this was ripped with SNESGFX, this rip lacks some color. I apologize.

Seiken Densetsu 3 - Dark Castle (Back Door)

Download: Here
Notes: Because I'm a n00b, the FG3 slot is taken for this one, and I'm too lazy to figure out how to move it to BG1. I'll fix it later though.

Chrono Trigger - Black Omen (Pinnacle)

Download: Here
Notes: Even though I used SNESGFX, I'm pretty proud of this one.

And now for the rips I didn't show off.

Romancing SaGa 3 - Divine Tower

Download: Here
Notes: Am I the only one who's surprised that there haven't been any RS3 rips yet?

Earthbound - Giygas (Phase 3)

Download: Here
Notes: Remember how I made that rip of Giygas back in 2014? I figured it was necessary to go all the way.

Chrono Trigger - Font

Download: Here
Notes: The spacing is a little weird at times, but if you can look past that then here you go.

Chrono Trigger - Moon

Download: Here
Notes: I was bored and figured that a full moon rip would be useful to some people so here you go.

Well that's what I have to show this year. I hope you guys like what you see. Feedback is always appreciated.
Nice to see Pandora's box (a demo at least) released, I'll try to play it soon :D

Yeah, I think Lui37 made that port for the 2013 C3. Pretty good stuff in that pack too, it also includes Battle 2 from Romancing SaGa 3 and Secret of the Forest from Chrono Trigger (aka my favorite song in the entire damn game)

Thanks! Glad you like my stuff. #w{=3}
I never really paid attention to Pandora's Box, but it looks great so far, I might actually consider playing it soon!

Also, those rips are looking awesome, but I have one complaint. On the last rip, the moon looks a little too egg shaped IMO, but it still looks nice.

That'd be sweet! Glad you like it.

Well I ripped the image as is so idk what to do about that #w{=3}. Glad you like the rips!
Here are some nice Rips, nice Job !
I'm going to use Earthbound - Giygas (Phase 3)
You know how I am excited when I saw my name on the credits.
What tcdw said. I'll be sure to give this a playthrough some time. Also nice to see some ripped graphics too.
Got to check about half of the soundtrack, and I assume you won't go back and actually plan to use them in the hack? Still though, nice to see some little gems in it, including the Earthbound ports, as it's actually quite hard to pick a decent song for every level we make.
As for the rips, they aren't pretty bad. I'm curious to see in which sorts of levels they're going to be implemented.

And finally, I gave your hack a playthrough and, not gonna lie, I like it so far. You can keep the mushroom in the automatic walking room by stomping on the shell at the right time after it hits the turn block. I found no major breaks otherwise. Nice job with this hack, and I'm looking forward to see it finished as a whole!
Windowless ride, feeling alive
Are you alive or just breathing?
It's nice to see kaizo still up and alive. I haven't played many hacks myself, but this one looks interesting. Maybe I'll give it a go sometime!
So I finally got around to play this hack and it was really fun. A walljump here and there can break a few things but I don't think that's an issues since it isn't a pit hack (Or at least this level isn't).
One thing though: I'm not sure what you do if you die after the midway. Is there supposed to be a mushroom? I can't find one and I don't think it's possible without.
Also the BG in the vertical level is off for me (loops when I go too far down which creates cutoff) #tb{:p}

There's a reason for the CT moon looking egg-shaped. The internal aspect ratio for the SNES is 8:7, but it displayed on TVs at a 4:3 aspect ratio instead. Some, but not all graphics from SNES games took this into account, such as the Chrono Trigger moon graphic being squished so it can appear round on 4:3 TV sets.

Here's an example I found on the internet: Chrono Trigger 8:7 vs. 4:3. Note the roundness of the moon in the 4:3 screenshot. Also, the 4:3 shot is using bilinear filtering, because raw SNES pixels in 4:3 don't look good.

Back on topic... I've never been a fan of playing Kaizo hacks, but Pandora's Box will probably be pretty fun to watch at least! Not sure if you have it in your hack, but parallax scrolling can always make SMW hacks look visually appealing.
Sorry I've been unable to respond to your feedback, I've had a busy weekend.

Well I plan on changing a few tracks, but most of this is final.

Glad you like it. Keeping the mushroom and stomping on the shell is the intended solution since you have to break a turn block in the next room, unless I misunderstood you.

I watched your TAS of the demo and thank you for pointing out the breaks, I'll fix the ones that I can. And thanks for pointing out the midway thing, guess I didn't test it thoroughly enough haha. And for the BG cutoff, I noticed that too. I'll probably fix it at some point but its not may main priority right now.

Thank you everyone else who liked what I had to show off. I'm really happy you guys like this stuff, and I'm also really glad the demo got accepted. As for the graphics, I'll try and get all the palmask files for those and submit them soon, but it probably won't be for another week or so.

I mean more that in the video you get hurt, and my solution was to stomp on the shell while on that pretty tight space without taking a hit.

Gotcha. I'll fix that.
