HERE YOU GO!

All the levels from the first VLDC in one ROM, now with a finished overworld and other fancy stuff. If you've played the version from last C3 then this is pretty much the same thing. If you haven't heard of this before, then welcome to 2008.

Note that even when the game autosaves, it doesn't keep track of which levels have been cleared or which levels you collected the Yoshi coins, so you will have to do that yourself. The level credits file marks how many exits are in each level and which ones contain Yoshi Coins.

A big thank you to everyone who supported me on this project.

If you find any bug in the hack let me know.

Now, some of you might want to ask me if I'm going to do VLDC2-6. I'd love to see those compilated as much as you do, but VLDC1 already took a lot of my hacking time, and I don't feel like putting together another contest right now, so the short answer is no. Rockythetigre told me he was working on VLDC2 and I gave him some advice, but I don't know how he's going or if it's still working on it.

If you want to compilate any of the VLDCs, I'll post a guide explaining what I did in VLDC1 and giving you tips on how not messing everything up. I wanted to post it at the same time as the release of the hack, but I haven't written it yet, so keep an eye on this thread.

Have fun.
I'll be sure to give this a try. I've always meant to play some more older hacks that aren't called "Brutal Mario," so this should do quite nicely. I'll be interested to see how level design differed back then. (though judging by some hacks today, not much >_>)

Thanks for taking the time to put this together! ^^

Mario X World DX, SER and BSB are pretty good imo º3º

Also Rise to the Challenge (iirc that one's 2009)

I also had fun with Super Challenge World but I'm not sure if it aged all that well

Nice work.
Thank you for putting this together, it seems like it was a lot of hard work.
I've only played a few levels yet, but wow, the hacking style really changed over the course of the last years o.O
It would have been nice if it marked the levels you already played, but it isn't a big negative.

Heh, I'll have to try this out. It's interesting to see how our standards have changed over the last decade. I wonder how the first place level in this hack would rank today.

As for older hacks (pre-2010), I've played SDW:TLC, TSRPR, Panic in the Mushroom Kingdom, The Cookie Crisis, Brutal Mario, and Super Mario Infinity.

You don't notice how collective style and standards evolve until you see something from eight years ago. No one would have had a reason to replay these old levels if not for your collaboration, so kudos on preserving the past. #smw{} (This is a museum in hack form!)

It's clear you put a lot of work into it, and it paid off - this really seems like something that could have emerged from 2008. The credits level is really charming!

Two things I noticed, though: Noobish Noobsicle's name is misspelled in the credits, and there's no Time Up fix installed. I'm pretty sure that was around in 2008, so it wouldn't be anachronistic to apply it.

ew is this what vldc looked like in the old days

I wanted to apply the time up patch, but I forgot at the last minute. Anyway, I updated the file and fixed both issues.

Thanks to everyone for the nice words, I'm glad you guys liked it. And yes, the standards have changed a lot since 2008.
Man, this was a nostalgic ride for me. I remember judging this way, way back in the day.

Thanks for putting it together. I'm glad we have this piece of history on the site now.
Dang, awesome job putting this together. It's amazing how far we've gone in hacking... a lot of that is due to all the lunar magic updates of course. Still, the palettes alone now are so much better than back then.
Great job putting all the entries from the very first VLDC ever together. It's amazing how much our standards have changed since then and at which point we began to improve (the way the credits level was done was clever enough). I wonder how a compilation of the next contests would be like and who'd be in charge of these.

However, you (or whoever built the maps) seem to have enabled all directions for two of the levels, which either froze the game or led to a non-existant tile.
I didn't expect you'd do this, thanks for compilating it!

PS: let's play terraria e.e

Fixed and updated the patch, thanks for reporting this.
Good job doing this. How many are we backloged so to speak?
Oh wow I didn't even notice this. Nice job! Will try it out some time.
I will try it.
btw compiling these hacks sounds interesting. I might give a shot at the sixth one, so it would be nice if you told me some advice/guides.
Oh, there it finally is~ I'm stuck in the last place level but I'm sure it gets better lol
Thanks for your hard work! Definitely deserving of an honorary mention
I am very glad this is finished!

I haven't worked on VLDC2 currently, as it is kinda time-consuming time I do not really have (and there were levels with too many exits ._.). And compiling is hard. So I dunno if I continue VLDC2. But I hope I'll see a VLDC2-6 compilation in the future.
I'm kind of a sucker for old hacks. Back then it wasn't about anything huge or flashy, like HDMA effects or sampled music -- just pure level design and pure fun. You against the game. And that's why I'm so glad you had this great idea.

I've been playing around with it for a while now, and it's like stepping through a time machine. I remember being little and watching the winning level on YouTube. Offers a great perspective on how hacking has changed -- and also how, at its core, it really hasn't. Nice idea and nice work, dude.
