GeminiSunfall is proud to present...
The Summer Level Contest!
We're now in the midst of summer here (at least, those of us living in the Northern Hemisphere anyways), and there is still a lot of it left to go around! Whether you're out in the bright hot sunshine or keeping cool in the shade, there is no denying the impact the summer season is having on all of us. But before all of this summer goodness starts to fade away, we're going to be having ourselves a summer-themed level contest!
For this contest, you will be creating a level that you think will best convey the summer mood. What do you think of when summer comes to mind? Sandy beaches? Tropical islands? Amusement parks? A stroll through the fields? Maybe you've got something even more clever in mind? Use your imagination to try and convey the best representation of summer you can through your level design!
What's that? Is there a reward for whoever makes the best level in this contest?
Why yes there is: I've got a 20$ Steam card that I will gift to whoever produces the best level of this contest.
Submission Rules
-You will be submitting one level for this contest.
-You will be working alone, no partners or collaborations.
-Your level should be no more than 3F total screens. While I personally do not mind playing superlevels, it becomes more difficult to fairly score them for the sheer amount of content they present.
-Your level should not require glitch abuse to complete (i.e. double grabbing carryables, warping through solid tiles, etc.)
-Do not submit a kaizo level. Your level should not require savestates to complete. Incredibly hard levels, while not necessarily Kaizo, may result in point reductions if they impact the design and enjoyability factors.
-The deadline for contest submissions is August 16th at 12AM (GMT-8:00)Fixed for time clarity
-Your submission should be in the form of an .ips or .bps patch. If you find it necessary for whatever reason, I will accept it inside a .zip folder.
Any submissions found to be violating these rules will be disqualified.
Resources
-For graphics, you may use the ones readily available in SMWCentral's Graphics section or create your own.
-For sprites, blocks, and ASM, you may only use those which are officially hosted on this site. You can make your own tweaks to them, but I want to keep this fair and not have entrants using this contest as an excuse to show off fancy new stuff.
-Custom music is allowed, but will not be a factor in scoring your level unless it somehow breaks or sounds really terrible.
Scoring (out of 50)
PRESENTATION (20): How well does your level adhere to the contest theme?
VISUALS (10): How aesthetically pleasing is your level? Things which factor into this score include graphical consistency, pallete choices, and tileset usage.
DESIGN (10): Does your level have a good design philosophy behind it? This is a primarily a measure of functionality, and whether a level feels fluid or clunky.
ENJOYABILITY (10): Is your level a blast to play, or does it bore players out of their mind or frustrate them to no end?
If anyone has questions or concerns regarding one or more of the rules, please let me know immediately!
Thank you for taking the time to read this post, and I hope everyone has fun making their levels! Because I'm hoping to have just as much fun playing them!
