Yoshiatom's Post
I honestly want to take part this, even though I've only really made one (mediocre) port in my lifetime and don't really though that much about Music Porting.

besides Wakana will just win anyway

I contacted this staff and gave him €50 PayPal. So ya, best one may win. #tb{TwT}

Seriously tho, I hope I will be able to finish my rounds lol. It's gonna be hard to juggle hack moderation/university/irl stuff/contest/etcetc, so don't be surprised if I suddently drop.
I'll be sure to keep that in mind.

I didn't realize there was a discussion thread, moving this to here

man yall aint even ready for this im about to fuck the whole game up. you guys dont stand a chance.

by the way does anybody know a good porting tutorial? asking for a friend.

UPDATE to the rule list. For those of you who might have been planning to work with another user, I have bad news for you. It has been brought to my attention that I never addressed the issue of collaboration, which is not allowed. The works (as in mml) produced must be done on your own; this rule does not extend to getting tips, help with problems, or receiving a MIDI to use should you choose. To keep things simple, you should know what I mean by collaboration.

Wait wat. So this means I can't use 75% of my samples folder because I'm not the one who ripped the .brrs? This sounds quite nazi tbh. I hope I misunderstood...

I used this one back then, although some stuff is outdated. I guess try combining this + AMK's readme for syntax and hex commands?
How do you think about minimum sample set?

I think that empty sample set should not allow.
(Because we can't use it in a game.)

I was mostly taking the piss tbh, I've been doing pretty good just from the syntax reference but if there's anything I can't grasp from that + looking at other peoples ports + some experimentation then I might take a look at that. I've just been porting entirely by hand but my workflow doesn't really involve midi so im prolly gonna keep doing things manually.

Haven't gotten to custom samples yet tho that's probably something I should try before idol starts.

Also yeah what exactly is meant by all samples must be done on your own? Does it mean they can't be ripped from games/sampled from other works, they have to be recorded or synthesized by us? Or does it just mean we have to be the one who ripped/converted it? I mean the first meaning sounds very extreme and the second just seems arbitrary, if I want to use a sample that's already been ripped why would I need to rip it again when the end product is identical?

Updated the rule:

• 8. You can not collaborate with another user, as you can not port/compose actively with another user. You are allowed to use/receive resources from other users and friends, but your MML must be produced on your own.

(Also it looks like both me and 6646 like the same girl. @avatar)

This might be a bad idea. Idol is mostly about porting to SNES instead of just SMW, using SMW samples while porting in contests about quality like these will limit most people a lot, because the default sample set uses around 27 kb (and more if you're including global songs and sound effects) and you would only have around 28 kb free to work with.
As long as ARAM isn't exceeded, then participants may use whatever samples they please; only if the challenge allows it. #tb{^V^}

All right, I looked at the rules a little bit more, and I just want to clarify this: does converting SPCs generated from a tracker with a SPC converting program (me and most people use SPC to MML, but still) give you a penalty? If no, then I think someone should clarify that, since not everyone uses text files to make music and I think that detail should be addressed accordingly.

I don't know what a tracker is, but if it ports the song for you, then no, you can not use it.
A tracker is an audio sequencer, much like something like FLStudio, only difference is that unlike the more common and popular DAW, it doesn't use a piano roll.

He'd basically be editing the song with that program, exporting what he has as an .SPC, and running it through SPCtoMML in order to get an MML. It's kind of a roundabout way of getting midi to a desirable MML, but it's technically not just running any regular .SPC through SPCtoMML and submitting it.
That kind of sounds like "automatic porting", and similarly, SPCtoMML isn't allowed. You must port using TinyMM, Petite or similar.
It's absurd to you disallow trackers, these are like a timeline graphical editor for music and common between 99% of the music composers. It's a kind of tool that I will definitely have to do before leaving SMW Hacking.

For comparison matter, disallowing that kind of editor is like you being forced to draw graphics using notepad (draw square at (a,b,c,d), set color to C, draw line from (x0,y0,x1,y1), etc.) and then generate a image output (spc) using some command line tool (amk).
