Changes about ips/bps patching on SMW Hacks Section

Presumably this does not affect File Bin, only the actual hack submissions.

Anyway, I am definitely in favour of this for SM64 in particular. With SMW the difference is slight. With SM64 the alternative is a series of tools including extension, expansion etc. which usually fails for me. Converting SM64 hacks into a single .bps would be excellent.
Forcing .bps is forcing a better patching system, how could anybody disagrees with that?

Well, a lot of newly posted hacks still tried to publish their hacks with an .ips. While some already have submitted theirs in .bps format, what they might not know is that it's as easy to do as making an hack in .ips format.

If they're not aware of the rule change, then of course they'll break it. Same goes for everyone who submits ROMs, removing them is our way to inform them of the rule.

Perhaps we should sticky this in the WIP forum. And we should clean up the hack submission page, nobody wants to read that wall of text.

i don't know if changing it into a .bps will make it unplayable or not.

Of course not. If anything, it becomes more playable: Flips has an automatic source ROM picker, so you can double click the patch to create a ROM or launch the emulator - but only for BPS.

And, as mentioned, a BPS gets angry if you try to apply it to wrong ROM. IPS doesn't, it just emits a garbage file.

Your file bin belongs to you; we still remove illegal stuff, of course, but there are no real quality standards. Hack submissions, on the other hand, are part of the site.

So yes, IPS remains allowed in the file bin. But we recommend BPS for everything, of course.

IPS was never possible for SM64 (IPS works only for files up to 16MB, SM64 hacks tend to be around 48MB), and PPF was banned long ago. Everything contains either BPS or Xdelta over there (though some contain multiple patches).

Not slight enough. The are fewer ways to screw up SMW IPSes than SM64 PPFs (at least SMW has only one correct source ROM), but people still screwed up way too often.

Every single rule change causes objections from a couple of users who care only about the drawbacks of the changes, without considering the advantages. In the case of BPS, the drawbacks are that LIPS doesn't understand it, and LM doesn't understand it.

tldr: Haters gonna hate.

That's not true. For people who hack SMW, it will always be easier to make IPS patches as long as the functionality exists in Lunar Magic. IPS making is built into the program everybody already uses. BPS making requires a separate download.

I'd be willing to bet that that's why a lot of those newly rejected hacks went with IPS instead of BPS.

Was PPF banned for SM64? There are a few hacks I know that used it and have not been converted (the ones I tried to play but couldn't):

Organ of Matrias
SM64 Twisted Adventures
Star Revenge 6

and probably many more. I think new hacks here are required to use .bps but the PPF files have not been converted on all of them. I assume that is a work in progress.
December 18, 2016: .ips patches officially banned.

January 2, 2017: .ips patch submitted to hacks section

January 3, 2017: hack accepted

...? I'm confused... I can make .bps patches fine, but I just didn't know.

It seems odd to me, however, that it wasn't "Instantly Removed" when a mod saw it.

That's my fault, as I've tested the entire hack but didn't check the file somehow. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Why did you post here 2 years after the last one was made? And say absolutely nothing of value?

No one cares. This topic is no longer relevant. Any other posts made in here will not have any discussion value, so I'll just close this. Don't bump old threads for no reason.
Twitter
also just a PSA responding to a bump with "why did you bump" and nothing else is not any better than actually bumping the thread
