Sonic Legacy - A Choconilla Sonic 2 hack

I've wanted to try hacking Sonic since sometime in 2015, but couldn't get into until last October, when I discovered SonLVL. After bungling a Sonic 1 hack by messing up a block and not having backups, I decided to try hacking Sonic 2. At first, I intended for the hack to be vanilla aside from having custom palettes, but after changing the Zone title cards, which required an external tool, I decided to try putting in some other custom content, like custom music and some custom setpieces here and there.

As usual, Sonic starts his adventure in a lush tropical paradise by the beach.

Sonic next finds himself speeding down the highways of a slightly futuristic city at night.

Sonic has stumbled upon the ruins of a lost civilization submerged in the murky waters of a swamp.

Sonic decides to satisfy his gambling addiction at this glitzy casino. He'll still have to fight Eggman though.

Yeah, it's a patch since ROMs aren't allowed here. It should be patched to a Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (JUE} (!) ROM.

The demo IS playable beyond Spirit Casino Act 2, but the level layouts haven't been edited yet, aside from the addition of some Rings in Neo Death Egg. They will give you a chance to hear more of the hack's custom music though, most of which I ported myself. Of course, you could also check out the Sound Test to hear those.

Cool Sonic hack, Gamma V. Frankly, I don't see much "choconilla" elements in here, all I see is basically edited levels and palettes, nothing more. Then again, I haven't played Sonic 2 in a while, and I don't know all of the original graphics so I can't tell.

Other than that, very unique hack! Great job!
R.I.P. eXcavator... You will always have a place in our hearts...

NIce to see some people hacking Sonic. Excellent job ^_^
Layout by LDA during C3.
Wish you'd come up with, at least, different zone graphics instead of just editing the original palettes.
Vary up the order, come up with new tropes if possible...

Just palette and layout hacking and a few different graphics are not gonna get me interested, I might as well just boot up Sonic 2 or Pocket Adventure.

Sonic hacks don't go by vanilla/chocolate/choconilla nonsense labels.

Just whether you changed the graphics/layouts/game mechanics or not.
It's for the better honestly, full vanilla should be kept to contests (as a challenge) or as a sort of personal challenge for experienced hackers, not an entire subgenre.

also talking about sonic hacking reminds me that fusoya should hurry the fuck up with making LM open source sometime this century
I've only been hacking Sonic since October, and Sonic graphic editing isn't as easy as SMW graphic editing. There are MANY more tile behaviors to consider. It would be easiest to follow the mappings of original game's chunks. That's easier said than done due to how the tilesets are set up.

Well it's good to see you're hack isn't being ignored, unlike over at SSRG. As always it shows promise.

Iiiit's time for Tube News.
Nice, Sonic hacks are so rare these days, it's nice to see one here, and the person making it is none other than THE Gamma V! Very courageous of you given how complex the game must be (I've never tried hacking it myself), and also because you kept going even after your Sonic 1 hack got poofed.
I can tell by the screenshots that I really like the palettes, especially the first level's. I should give the demo a shot later!

Haha, yeah. I remember there being a bunch of awesome hacks
with a lot of potentail YEARS ago, like Advanced edit.

I guess it falls upon SMWC to make actual sonic hacks since sonic retro
doesn't ever do anything except for joke hacks like thomas the tank engine in sonic
and crazy big projects that end up being cancelled(sonic megamix).
Most of the serious Sonic hacks are coming out of Sonic Stuff Research Group these days, rather than Sonic Retro. It's just the joke hacks that seem to get the most attention. *cough*CrazySonic*cough*

Yes, I do remember a lot of the projects that were being worked on over at Retro in the past. Most of them did indeed get canceled with no more than a demo released. The reason for the high failure rate of Sonic hacks may be that Sonic hacking is more complex than SMW hacking in pretty much every respect. There are no public resource archives where one can go and download ready-made custom graphics or music, Levels generally take much longer to make due to being larger and requiring a bit more nonlinearity to give an authentic feel, and applying ASM hacks requires direct editing of the disassembly, rather than inserting a patch. Many commonly-applied ASM hacks do have tutorials dedicated to them on Sonic Retro, and that's the closest thing the Sonic scene has to patches. I made use of some of those tutorials/ASM hacks for this project, such as Clownacy's Sonic 2 Clone Driver V2 for custom music and a hack that separates the art for Zones that share art by default, such as Emerald Hill and Hill Top.

Are those casino graphics in the actual game vanilla game too? The ragged, bright red edges around the solid color board look a little jarring, were there really no patterns or anything on those?`

Other than that, looks nicely done. Haven't had time to play it, but knowing you I can guess that it's gonna be a solid experience when finished!

Your layout has been removed.
Those are vanilla. Maybe the new palette does make them look a little more noticeable.
