Back on the subject of Yoshi coin rewards I think it would be good if the rewards were done on a per level basis. Perhaps each author that includes Yoshi coins in their level can also include a bonus room/section that can only be accessed after collecting all 5 coins.
That way if you love a particular level youll be more compelled to seek out all 5 coins to get additional content, but if you dislike a level you wont feel like you are missing out by ignoring them altogether.
Nice idea but I don't think the authors (me included) will appreciate. This is basically forcing some particular level design aspect and will probably look out of place in certain types of entries (notably Abstract and Castle).
Also, if every author has to make its own bonus room, all levels will take up 1 more room, and insertion-wise, this may not be cool.
I personally think Yoshi coins should unlock bonus levels (or parts of one bonus level) that have a similar purpose to "Top Secret Area", aka giving powerups. This would:
1) Allow players to play levels in all forms of Mario. I feel like resetting its powerup everytime is a disadvantage for average players when they're on difficult levels, like Matterhorn.
2) Allow for a per-player difficulty curve. Haven't completed a hard level ? No problem ! Do the easy ones first and then grab a powerup !
3) Procure the player satisfaction imo: unlocking more powers for a character is one the best things in a videogame. I think the following order would be the best: Mushroom, Flower, Cape, regular Yoshi, all colors of Yoshi.
This could very well be implemented alongside the "Hall of Fame" idea, btw (this way, you get more chances to get all Yoshi coins in levels as it goes). At least, that's how I imagine it would be best.
