I agree with wanting it to be something in-game that we earn, though I can't really think of anything worthwhile for what that something would be.

Not sure how viable it would be in terms of space and such, though

IIRC, as long as we don't go out of our way to waste tons and tons of it, space really shouldn't be an issue this time around.
Maybe Yoshi Coins could allow for buying character skins? The characters would literally be the same as Mario except with a skin swap.

(Obviously +1 for Yoshi Coin Rewards)

Are you a sample porter and wanna help with 100 Rooms of Enemies: The Nightmare Edition? Private Message me or Mellonpizza for details. Expect trading "resources" in exchange. 4 more left.

Can we use the original vanilla bosses? I'm planning to make an airship level and I need Roy Koopa as my boss. Pleeeeeease? And there's a pink palette in the Bony Fish castle palette (dunno which number). Could you make a fix for him to use that? It's not like most people will play it on ZSNES but the Bosses work in accurate emulators.

You can use whatever you want in your level. There will not be any patches applied for your level.

This is actually a great idea. At every X Yoshi Coins, unlock another entry in the hall of fame with the winners of VLDC1 to 9 opened up sequentially. Not only would it give the players even more incentive to explore the levels, but it would be a cool throwback (especially since this is the 10th one and all). Seems like the perfect reward to me - just don't make them mandatory to open up World X.
+1 for Aeon/SNN's suggestion for Dragon Coin rewards.

But yeah, don't use it for World X. That's just fake longevity.

I really need a layout. :<
These are all cool ideas, but how would it manage to fit in the ROM? I assume there will be more entries this year & I know that all the stuff in VLDC9 was just barely cramped in.

Hi.
I was actually wondering the same thing. Considering how many entries there were last year and how this is the tenth VLDC, there will probably be more entries, coupled with all the flashy ASM VLDCX's overworld may also have, I fear there won't be any space left for the top entries of previous years to fit in. Unless people are willing to sacrifice an amazingly unique OW like VLDC9's for something awesome but not as technically impressive, or just be heavier with the ammount of resources designers will have for their levels.

Whoops, never saw that. Guess that settles it. #tb{^^}

Even without Vitor's new system, we could probably still do it in 6 MB. When Jack expanded the ROM, it was right before the release and it was really only done to fit a few more things in (music, world X, etc). We could probably easily fit 150+ levels into 6 MB. 8 MB is basically overkill, and if we manage to fill that somehow...

That sounds like a challenge to me. Let's do it.

--------------------
Later.
my vldc level is gonna take up 4mb alone just you wait

--------------------
my gimmick requires 100 different sublevels and 100 different ExGFX files. if anybody has any they aren't using let me know

--------------------
Let me remix subterranean glow as another unlockable level, obviously. (and remix other old vldc levels)

I hope the sparkles are fixed for the vldc10 rom =v
Hopefully it won't be too much trouble for me to utilize the SuperFX chip in my level
my level can only be entered through a mode 7 overworld for some strange reason, so best world's going to have to be mode 7.
hope that wont be a problem #wario{:whistle:}

--------------------
My level will contain infinite amounts of tile 0x25 stacked on each other.
I hope that won't be an issue.

Back on the subject of Yoshi coin rewards I think it would be good if the rewards were done on a per level basis. Perhaps each author that includes Yoshi coins in their level can also include a bonus room/section that can only be accessed after collecting all 5 coins.

That way if you love a particular level you’ll be more compelled to seek out all 5 coins to get additional content, but if you dislike a level you won’t feel like you are missing out by ignoring them altogether.

Nice idea but I don't think the authors (me included) will appreciate. This is basically forcing some particular level design aspect and will probably look out of place in certain types of entries (notably Abstract and Castle).
Also, if every author has to make its own bonus room, all levels will take up 1 more room, and insertion-wise, this may not be cool.

I personally think Yoshi coins should unlock bonus levels (or parts of one bonus level) that have a similar purpose to "Top Secret Area", aka giving powerups. This would:
1) Allow players to play levels in all forms of Mario. I feel like resetting its powerup everytime is a disadvantage for average players when they're on difficult levels, like Matterhorn.
2) Allow for a per-player difficulty curve. Haven't completed a hard level ? No problem ! Do the easy ones first and then grab a powerup !
3) Procure the player satisfaction imo: unlocking more powers for a character is one the best things in a videogame. I think the following order would be the best: Mushroom, Flower, Cape, regular Yoshi, all colors of Yoshi.

This could very well be implemented alongside the "Hall of Fame" idea, btw (this way, you get more chances to get all Yoshi coins in levels as it goes). At least, that's how I imagine it would be best.
