I recommend waiting until it starts, since VLDCX isn't even over yet and you may not know what possible changes will be implemented by then.

Theres nothing that stops you from doing it early/right now, but you might need to make changes when the next contest starts as its possible that the rules change.

You can do anything if you keep it a secret.

You don't really have to keep it a secret, but why would you start so early? It's more fun to make your level while all the hype is going on.
Not to mention you're designing for this contest's rules, which might change for next contest.
oops i already made my vldc20 entry i hope the rules don't change before then

Well, I want it to be better. I don't have enough time left to make major changes. So I want to start early so I have more time.
*Insert witty footer here*
-I made vanilla cutscenes
-Vanilla cutscenes take obscene amounts of map16
-RPG level, which means I need even more map16
-only one page allowed

Result:

After being very, very resourceful...

NINE BLOCKS LEFT. There are 256 to start with! That means 96.5% of my original map16 is used!

Anyone else do something similar?
Want to see my Super Mario Timeline?
Looks like with some rearranging you could be more efficient, and free up some extra tiles if you need to, but it's hard to say without a grid overlay...

This base ROM seems to have some act as issues.

Or maybe you have the tileset #lm{gfxby} wrong? Like... not set to Underground?
Meaning it's SMW's code that's causing this?

It most likely means that you have it set to the wrong tilemap, as I said above. Ya, Super Mario World's code, but in the end it's you that's causing it because you've most likely neglected to do this:

Anybody know how people make the reset doors with an R on it?
Is it just the layer 3 R?

I also think I remember seeing people somehow get an R actually aligned in the middle of a door or centered above it, how did people do that? Like, how did they offset the R by 4 pixels to sit in the center of the door? Or did I dream that up?
Your layout has been removed.
Most people actually use "re"
Never seen a centered "R" in vanilla myself. Doesn't matter because "RE" is more intuitive imo.
I have a question.

Am I the only person who does the difficulty curve to level each time you progress through worlds? I feel like for a contest like this, I handle difficulty curves incorrectly and I'm not used to difficulty curve mid-level like that.

For example: World 1 levels in my Mario Babys Hack that are not towers and castles stay in a constant curve until the next world or gets harder every new level. (World 3)

no.

There's no rule saying you have to give your level a difficulty curve. In making a good level, it's more about giving the player a feeling of progression rather than difficulty. You can make a piss easy level that's still an enjoyable experience because the scenarios and design evolves as the player goes through it. This is usually done by designing around a few key set-ups, and finding variations on the same set-up that take the concept further.
