Ask the Judges!

Mode 7 graphics are 8BPP, but for SMW I think Nintendo forces the graphics to 3 or 4BPP. Either way, there's a tool for converting GFX27.bin to a readable format, just look in the tools section.

Not only it doesn't do anything (blank cmd window and nothing else), but it also duplicates and eats all of my computer's RAM.
So, if you could either give me a version that doesn't force me to force reboot my machine or just the 4BPP .bin files, that'd be great, thanks. #ab{-_-}

I tried it and I had the same issue. Holy man, that was tough to get rid of all those processes without restarting the computer.

I told Alcaro to debug it to see why is that happening but... well, someday we will know.

You also cannot recolor transparency into a solid color, but that's easy to get around with tile merging.

So in effect we can change transparent to colored, right? The wording there made me think twice.

Yes, you can effectively recolor transparency by merging any tile with a solid color tile. But you can't then merge that resulting tile with anything else.
uhh, this might be hard to explain. Do we have to merge 16x16 tiles over a 16x16 tile exactly? or can we like, split it up.

So my specific example is the hammer bro that throws hammers from its platform. I want to replace its head. Can I replace the top two 8x8 tiles that make up its helmet, then merge the two 8x8 tiles that make up its face and replace them?
ask me if i give a f*ck...
I'm not entirely sure what you mean, but all the merging/recoloring/etc. rules and limitations apply for 8x8 tiles always, and not 16x16.
It's easily the best thing I've done
So why the empty numb?
The merging/replacing rules refer to 8x8 tiles. Your example (individually replacing the top two 8x8 tiles and merging/replacing the bottom two 8x8 tiles), is allowed.

Since that tool gave me absolutely no problems, I could successfully convert that bin to a 4kb one. Here it is

-Since GFX shifting isnt listed, will it ever be considered in the future?

-Is tile/GFX duplication, where one tile's colors are untouched, and the other one is recolored allowed?

Maybe. We never know the future.

Yes.

I forgot to ask, if not every single entry uses two messages, is it okay if i use the Display Level Message (19) stack glitch so i can have a third message?
are any of the judges gonna stream/youtube their judging/first playthrough of the levels like ninomo and ninjaboy did in last vldc?
There's a chance that Torchkas might. He judge streamed the CLDC entries last year.

Hi.
lolyoshi also streamed 24hoSMW so he might also do it, but I'm not sure if he's gonna. Streaming and judging seems hard and VLDC will get a lot of entries much bigger than the fort contest.
Don't look at me!
It's easily the best thing I've done
So why the empty numb?
Torchkas and lolyoshi have both streamed judging before, so I wouldn't be surprised if they did that again, at least partially.
I don't think the rest will, but I'm not 100% sure on that one.

I don't have the internet to stream, but I'd like to put gameplay videos up on youtube like ninja boy did.
I might stream. It will depend if I'm not too busy, and how many submissions there will be.
I don't think I'll stream or put any gameplay videos up tbh.
How will the green doors be sorted out.
Very carefully.

If green doors even exist, which is not a guarantee, the judges will decide them.
